WoW Goes Free Forever (Except Not)

If WoW was F2P I would play it again. I feel like people get addicted to games like these when they have to pay: There's a certain time-sensitive 'I GOTTA GET THIS SH* BEFORE THE MONTH RUNS OUT'. The time you seem people 'getting hooked again' is when expansions come out. I played trial-vanilla, trial-Burning Crusade, the free-trial for Wrath of Lich King, and that was the extent.
I have Guild wars too, and I'm in no rush to play through it since there's no subscription. Since, TF2 went free I've only played about 3 hours, not including (dirty,dirty)idling.

You forgot to mention GW2 in the article. Its quite possibly a much bigger competitor than TOR. Yes, TOR is going to have a billion SW fanboys playing it for a while, but from what I've seen its gameplay is just more of the same.
GW2 however has a fresh take on the genre, and it doesn't even require a sub to play it.

Guild Wars is an mmorpg in the same way that Oblivion is a FPS. It's not.

It's a copy-paste of the combat system, but with forgettable class names, and awkward PvP, and a much smaller world. It will undoubtedly sell well at first, but BioWare has simply taken too long on this. People are moving on from MMOs.

This statement shows how little you actually know about The Old Republic, I suggest that you read some of the information about the game before you go and spread false information. Even if you wouldn't call it serious competition, Blizzard seems to think so, have you seen the latest questing content added with 4.2? Cut-scenes and dialog everywhere.

They've been moving towards that since Wrath, they are just working with a much older engine and the assumption that a large number of players will have less than stellar computers.

As an aside... where does this "WoW is dyeing!" thing come from? As I understand it, they still make up a majority of the MMO market, and while it has shrunk after the launch of Cataclysm, this happens every expansion. People buy it to try it, and then let it run out after a month or 2. Rift likely stole some players, but I don't think it will maintain it's upward trend as people get tired of it. I was after the beta, but to each their own.

Well considering LOTRO has gotten $30 from me (which is $30 more than I've spent on any other MMO) now that it's F2P, I bet WoW would rake in quite a bit if they did go F2P. Still not convinced that I want to do the lvl 20 thing. I feel like I'd just get irritated when I couldn't level up any more and say to hell with it.

well i tried it and didnt like it so my opinion may be biased but its amazing how it held up so long being so boring. and 6 years for a MMORPG is nothing. try tibia, that ones going for 14 years now. Or no, dont try it, its a bad game.
I remember back in the days free to paly games were something unheard of. now its an increasing fashion. and good thing that. one can choose how much to spend on his game this way and still have fun doing so. competition is rising so going free eventually is the only way i see it, after all, there are many free ones that are eating the players up.

The limitations of the free trial include:

No Trading
No Auction House
No Mail

While you can play through the new less grindy zones and get a much better feel for the classes, the highly specialized gear for twinking just isn't to be had without a full account.

If you have ever had a WoW account, they have a way to go back and re-try the game on that account. Check their site, as for the past two patches the are giving previous players a free week.


WoW already has micro-transactions even with a sub, so I doubt Blizz will go that way until they feel that transaction can cover the op costs... so, probably well after they release "Titan".

Yeah all they did was raise it from 14 days to unlimited on trial account which chances are you would be lvl 20 in under 14 days anyways.

Blizzard is great at creating positive publicity for itself without doing a thing because of sites like this and many others will mention this even though this will cost them nothing to do and really who is gonna stay a trial for more then 14 days anyway? By then I would guess you already made up your mind if you wanna buy the game or not.



I mean really this isn't even close to free to play. Though I do love WoW and have been playing for over 6 years so I would recommend the trial to anyone.

I never said WoW was dying - that would be hypocritical. I have two 85s and am subscribed right now The sheer momentum that WoW has built up will keep it going for decades, I'm sure. I do think that, as whole, the genre of the MMO is rotting quickly. It is utterly pathetic that there is exactly one title on the horizon - the horizon being maybe as much as two years - which has a chance of doing something interesting and new.

My opinion on TOR is a bit hasty and undeserved, I admit. I haven't played the game. But every bit of gameplay I see screams in a loud and unrepentant voice "WoW IN SPACE! WoW WITH LIGHTSABERS!"

And why on earth would I play a less-polished copy of the game I've already played, and am playing? All that leaves, then, is the story - and what kind of idiot buys an MMO for the STORY? MMOs are incompatible with good storytelling. It's like going to a country fair for the health food. That is to say, PANTS ON HEAD RETARDED.
