Ask your coach and teammates. They're the best in the state, right? I'll bet they know a thing or two, and could probably demonstrate their techniques more effectively than we could via message board.
Yah im trying out...But the thing is
I know the people at the escapist are smarticle :D
Have you tried filling your Tension gauge and using your Overdrive attack?
LMAO.

But to answer the question. The best thing I can tell you is try and keep focused. Wrestling is one of them sports where if you have something else on your mind other than the task at hand you will lose. Also I would say work on your leg strength. Thats the first thing any good wrestler will go for.

Uhm, I only wrestled my senior year (I moved to my school, and my old one didn't have a team or club) so I don't know how much I can help. But the best advice I can give you is to percevier, because training is really, really tough (atleast it was at my school) and very rigirous. Just stay mentally focused, and keep your head clear during training and matches, because being flustered is an easy way to fuck your mind and body up. Just stick to your training, absorb every move and technique you can, and don't give up on yourself.

This really applies to wrestling and every other martial art. I have ALOT more experience in other martial arts, and a small background in brazilian jiu jitsu helped me adapt a little faster. Also I wasn't completely inexperienced with one on one 'combat-type' sports. Your going to have to be used to a one-on-one confrontation. Keeping a clear head is the best way from getting nervous when its you and the other guy while everyone watches. That can be a really nerve-wracking, even terrifying experience. But if you keep a level head and just concentrate, you can definetly get over the fear. I'd also say absorb every thing you can, practice often, and make your wrestling technique your instinct, so it becomes natural in the ring and you don't have to think about it.

I was in a much lower weight class than you, so I had to rely alot more on speed, agility, and technique than the heavier weight classes. I had next to no power-weight between me dropping weight and just not being naturaly a real strong dude. Luckily I still won a few matches, but it wasn't easy because I was never the stronger of the two. So, I can't really give you any advice on technique, because our tools are totally different.

But mental strength, and the will to never give up is something you can always use. And with wrestling, which I consider the toughest sport you can compete in, you're going to need it.

Get as fit as you possibly can, a lot of martial sports/arts can come down to a battle of endurance (from what I've seen.). Maybe practise some reaction exercises to improve reflexes?
Possibly pain conditioning if you're allowed to use locks in your kind of wrestling.

But yeah, I can't help much but tell you what my Tae Kwon Do instructor tells me, since I don't do wrestling.
Try taking up Judo or a ground-based martial art, they could be useful.

That was a great post.:D
I'm here to help, sir.

I'm not saying pick up meditation or something (though you could and it would help), but just work out some kind of mental excersise to help you clear out your mind and to focus yourself, like a breathing excersise or something. Just so when you step up to the mat, you are ready and prepared to go without any stress holding you down.

if you want a good training regime i'm going to recommend the parisi school's training for warriors, when i was taking bjj a lot it was our most dreaded work out, although it's very good and does specific pro-grappling exercises

other than that if you don't want califlower ear, get head gear and always wear it

obviously you'll be training with your own team and cosidering you're probably a heavyweight i'd imagine that there aren't many people to work with (lightweights can train against bigger guys if their skill level is greater than their peers).

You're only as good as the people you train with, so if I were you I would find a personal coach or training partner, somebody who is revered in the sport, maybe even someone who owns an MMA gym? but find anybody of a higher caliber than yourself and roll with them in addittion to your team's regiment. You might want to work with the nearest college and if the coach there won't give you any time just talk to the other wrestlers at the college.

Out here, there's always small groups of ex-wrestlers forming crews. But don't just work with your team, find addittional training resources outside of the team.
