Writer's block and me.

I wanna be a writer.

Not just fanfic or stuff on the Escapist (although i will get something published on here one day, even if it kills me), but be an author, a published author. Even if i only sell 500 copies of my book, i'll be happy, because i would have gotten the general public to read my stories and hopefully see some of the craziness i see in my mind.

However, i have been crippled by writers block ever since (and i'm not a bigot or anything) i met my girlfriend, now fiancee. I moved into her flat out the back of her parent's place, and it is a very cramped space. We barely fit in here as it is, and we are constantly getting into each other's faces because of it.

This is my problem...when i write my good stuff, my reeeeeally good stuff, i like to do it alone. I should rephrase that - i need to do it alone. At first i thought i could do it - i bought a laptop and tried to write whilst listening to my Ipod whilst she watched TV, but it didn't work. The TV would distract me or she would start talking to me or start wanting attention from me, which would make me lose my train of thought which would then make me angry then we'd have an argument over whether i pay enough attention to her or not and...yeah.

After discussing this with her, we have come to the conclusion that i must be alone to write, even if its only for a day or so every week. I've decided to purchase a notebook laptop, something purely for writing yet small enough so i can take it anywhere - this way i can stuff it into my backpack whenever i go out somewhere and simply hit the deck and start bashing out prose when the mood strikes me. It could be directly after work, on a train, during a walk in the park, whatever.

Does anybody else have a problem like this? Also, does anybody else have one of those little notebook laptop thingys? I've had a look at some and they seem pretty cool, but does anybody have any recommendations?

Perhaps you should do it at a library, those places work a charm for me (And this is coming from a fellow aspiring writer...as well as budding level designer).

I can only write when alone and not being distracted. So I set MSN to Busy so the noise doesn't bother me, put on my music and I type. Although I haven't written in a while so my super-awesome-will-probably-be-shit story only has above 11,000 words.

One of the best/cheapest netbooks I've seen [http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B002GYVF8E/ref=s9_al_bw_ir01?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-4&pf_rd_r=01R5ZB926NBPJKKFHCM8&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=144733867&pf_rd_i=405287011]

Yeah, I get the same problem as you. But I haven't found a way to cure mine yet...

Thats exactly the way i used to do it. Stick on some music relevant to the scene in my story and let the words flow. 11,000 words is a decent effort though dude! When i was your age (christ, i seem to be saying that a lot these days), i was pushing myself to bust out those kinda word amounts per chapter. You gotta push yourself-ah!

I enjoy writing scripts (films, sitcoms etc) and i find i work better when i'm working with someone and can bounce ideas around
I've never tried writing a script before, although it would be interesting to see how it is done. I find that sometimes, when i'm thinking of a word or an action, it helps to bounce something off someone, but unfortunately my fiancee just isn't that person - at least, not for the stories i write >.O

Well, my friends have all complimented it, but they're my friends. I can bet you that critics would hate it.

Also, 11,000 words per chapter? Screw that, mine are around 2,500-3,500 long.

I suppose 11,000 words is an alright effort, but I started it late last year, so I really should have more by now. I just haven't done anything on it in a while. I need to hit 80,000 to get to novel stage, but I doubt I'll hit that.

[sub][sub]Heh, I'd hit that.[/sub][/sub]

I'm the same as you. I'd hope that your fiance would understand it and leave you alone when the writing mood strikes - my boyfriend does. He's good like that. :)

I have a netbook that I use almost exclusively for email and writing, and I love it. It's an EeePC 900HA. Very small. You can't have fat fingers or bad eyes with this thing. It has also had a couple of problems with its power adapter, but I hear that's a problem with all Asus laptops. If you want an ultra-light, ultra-portable netbook with good battery life, though, I'd recommend it.

I've been writing outside some. Recently, I haven't been able to actually focus on writing where I normally work (living room, TV/sound system nearby, PS3, Kitchen, sammich, family). So with that many distractions and shiny things, I took my laptop outside and sat on the porch for however long my battery lasted and managed to actually make some progress. A lot of times I take an actual paper notebook with me everywhere in case of I get inspiration while out with friends or just taking a walk (mostly because I don't want to be caught in bad weather while toting the thing around and I don't have a bag for it either).

The laptop I have isn't small per se (15 inch screen I believe), but it's incredibly light and durable(I've dropped it more times than I'm ever willing to admit to my mother). It's an Acer Aspire 5610-2762. Probably not the best laptop in the world, but it's the fastest I've ever owned and the thing hasn't died on me yet.

When I have to write something (I am an English student atm) I always like to go for a walk and be alone to think of a plan. I don't drive and spend a lot of time on the bus and normally my mind wanders and I get ideas. So it's not so much people not being around as people not distracting me.

I hate people to watch me while I write. This is because I'm very self conscious of unrealised ideas and I'm not ever sure I like something until it's all written down I can get down to some fierce editing. I don't so much mind them being around as long as we're in our own space and our own heads. After I know what I'm writing that is.

For me when I write I actually have to have something worth saying in order for me to be really happy with it. If it's something that I just have to write, then I get writers block and stop and start a lot and in the end I'm sort of uncomfortable with it. Down side of being a student I guess...

Your 'Creative Space' or 'Writers Space' needs to be an extension or yourself.
Somewhere you'll feel at ease and comfortable.

Or, do something 'off the cuff' and write down notes about your feelings of being uncomfortable, cramped, frustrated.

At least, thats what I do.

Personally, I always wait until the dead of night to write right when everyone is asleep and I can start cranking out words without having to look over my shoulder. Messes up my sleep schedule a bit, but at least I'm more productive.

I'm physically incapable of doing any work at all around other people, unless we're all actively working on the same thing. Also, I can't stand people watching or listening to what I'm doing.

...Actually, considering what I want to do with my life, that basically means I need to live alone forever. I'm really pretty okay with that.

Got any nice, quiet, out-of-the-way coffeeshops around? There's a place near my apartment that's a prime studying location -- it's always pretty crowded, but most people have their books or laptops out, so there's some ambient noise and people around, but you can work undisturbed.

As for laptops, I've got one of the old IBM Thinkpads, and the thing is virtually indestructable. It's seven years old and it's survived kicking around in my backpack all through high school (and I mistreated both backpack and laptop terribly) and surfing down several flights of stairs mostly unscathed -- the CD drive likes to occasionally fall out into my hand and the frame on the left side of the screen makes distressing popping noises when I push on it, but it still performs admirably. It's kind of big, but you might not want to go for small -- if you don't carry a ton of stuff around anyways and if you're going to be staring at a screen for hours on end, it might be a good idea to go for durability over convenience.

I'm kinda the same way, I picked up a netbook so that I could write while I was away from all the distractions of home, it's actually quite invaluable in that regard. As far as how I write, I cannot stand having people in the same room as me, I don't care if they read the finished product, but I can't seem to get anything done with people around me, so I share your pain there. My advise would be: yeah, pick up a cheap netbook (mine was ≈$350) and find a quiet little place to do your work that's away from everything that typically distracts you.

Bingo. Whenever I write for English class, it has to be late at night. My dad (lawyer, so lots of writing) does the same; sometimes he'll stay up all night and go to bed when it gets light out. Helps that he's in CA and he works with guys in on the East Coast.

Yeah I'm the same way, I have to be alone usually, and I have to be either really awake or barely consiously tired. I...mostly am alone, so I don't have that problem. I hear that when you're about to fall asleep that you get really creative, so maybe that'll help.

Also, used to I rp'ed alot on a play by post message board. Whenever I had writers block for my own story, I'd usually go and post there or read there. Sometimes it can help just seeing what others come up with. If you ever feel like you can't write something and just want to rp to try and get your creative juices flowing, look me up. I want to be a writer too and maybe we can inspire each other, hehe :D

Well, I usually am not that bothered by outside distractions. I don't have a netbook, and currently don't have any sort of money for it (which, even if I did, I'd use to buy a new computer), but I'm the same as you. I intend to some day get something published, as I really do write real prose from time to time.

The most depressing thing is that I carried my story - all the files containing it and info about it - inside my memory stick (A Sandisk Cruzer it was, delivered to you by Purely Trivia Man), which I had attached to a keychain, along with all my keys.

Well, about two months after I attached it there, the whole keychain, along with the memory stick and all my keys, I lost it. My keys, my story, everything, gone.
It wasn't that much, as it was only like, what, 17 pages, and 15,000 something words?

But it was still sad to lose it. Luckily, a person gave me the exact same model memory stick, with the exact capacity, so now, the obtaining of which has oddly inspired me to start writing again. I took a completely new backstory, new characters, and just write away.

I listen to music that I feel might inspire me the most, and put it on, and try to ignore the outside world. Even if it happens, I am still able to churn out material after I've been distracted.
