I was playing Assassin's Creed 2 yesterday, and every once in a while as you roam the cities you'll come across thieves or highwaymen or something (the game never really explained, but the first one I saw stole 150 florins from me), and you're supposed to chase them down and tackle them (NOT stab them in the face, I learned that after killing at least 4). So after chasing them for a few seconds they start to climb buildings and push people, as they're always scared to death of you (probably because I stabbed 4 of em in the face).
Anyways, as I'm chasing one of these guys across the rooftops of florence, a guard notices us and joins in the chase. As we continue our rooftop pursuit, more guards join. I tackled the dude and took his coins. Now every time you get one of these robbers, the screen looks at him as he begs for forgiveness. As i'm waiting for the guards to come attack me, i'm watching him beg. He's in the middle of "please spare me--" when the guard runs right past me and stabs him in the face. He falls off of the edge of one rooftop, and into a kind of lowered area between 2 raised rooftops. So I decide to watch. The guard who hit him and two others jump down in there and circle him, as 5 or more guards surround the little square depression. They all ignored me, and he ignored them. He tried to climb the sides to escape but they stabbed him and he fell back down. Then the 3 guys in there with him stabbed, beat and kicked him until he died. For about a second afterward, we all just kinda stood there as the guards wiped the blood off thier weapons. Then they noticed me and I ran off.
My little brother was watching, and the two of us were busting up laughing. Apparently, NO ONE is allowed on the rooftops, with petty thieves taking precedence over hardened assassins.
This happens EVERY time the thief runs past a guard. So next time you chase one down, stick around afterward for a great WTF moment
