Have any of you guys heard this? Microsoft has developed software that will detect and remove profanity from Xbox Live in real time. I think that this is great for silencing the jerks who ruin the games for everybody, but horrible for us who enjoy colorful humor. I am sure that this new feature (I don't know when it will be implemented) will be atractive to parents who have young children online. Also, I doubt that it will prevent anyone from buying the system, but is it fair?
I would like to see this feature, but it should be not be maditory for everybody.

*Also, I am sorry if this topic is already up, I looked but did not find.

although this will reduce 12-year-olds' abilities to be jackasses online and force them to widen their vocabulary, I am a firm believer in freedom of speech and I believe this is a bad idea. trust me in a year or two some guy or girl will bring up charges(in anywhere but Australia) and claim that it abridges their right to free speech. if they win the program will be taken offline, but given the mental capacity of the people this is going to affect the most i give their chance of winning slim to none. i guess this is just another innovation I'm going to have to get used to.

i tend to agre with black lincon here. trash talk is part of the game, and while it does get extreme sometimes, people have a right to say what they want about and to whom they want. plus, you can mute anybody you don't want to listen to. so... if it's a personal problem... do that. and if you don't want your kids to hear it... first of all- get used to it; that's the real world- take a bigger role in your child's life explaining that if you don't want it around. or, hell, throw away the mic, and "mute all" everybody for them.

I wonder if this censorship will be optional in the family settings(At least, for those old enough that do not want the censors.)

Oh, sure, and while they're at it, maybe they can make an OS that works.

Completely true. MS is delving too deep, even for itself.

It doesn't abridge free speech. Getting clocked by a cop in public for saying you don't like the government is stifling free speech, but me letting myself not hear some guy calling me a n***** (and this is not just young kids) because he lost in a game is my choice of what I want to hear. It's also not violating free speech because you're using someone else's service. If you walk naked into a restaurant, the owners are allowed to kick you out, because when you wish to use advertised services, then you agree to the provider's set of rules or abide by a code of conduct (if any). If Microsoft wishes to allow people to use its services, and chooses to expand its business by promoting a more friendly atmosphere, then it'd be more of a violation to abridge their choice to do so.

It shouldn't be mandatory. I don't mind swearing when you are just joking around with friends. Anyone will notice my more sarcastic posts contain a decent array of colorful language.

At the same time, I like the idea because the excessive swearers who yell out strings of profanity at people because they died are very annoying. However, the mute button works just fine.

your forgetting this will apply to people who don't pay for xbox live(silver members). when you get to the internet the rules get kind of iffy. i mean does your internet provider have the rite to say you cant watch porn because it isn't family appropriate? no they do not, so xbox live has no rite to force you to censor the internet, whether or not they own the service you use, if however this was an optional setting on the family settings like COR 2000 said then they can do it all they want.

I felt a great disturbance in the XBL community, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in homophobic profanity, and were suddenly silenced.
Well it hasn't happened yet...

I don't know, hopefully it is optional, but i usually either turn off the volume on my headset or private chat with a buddy anyway... so whatever.

I heard microsoft developed this, but I didn't think they were necessarily going to use it on XBL. I'm sure if they do implement it they'll have an option to disable it.

Yeah, your internet provider DOES have the right (it's 'right' by the way, not 'rite') to stop you from watching internet porn. No one would ever do that though, because that's why people have the internet in the first place. You sound a bit young for this place, you might want to try gamefaqs.

XBL is a service owned and maintained by Microsoft. By using it you are agreeing to their terms regardless if you like them.

If you don't like it, move to China.

that has somewhat of an irony to it doesn't it? talking about the possibility of censorship in the news room forum of these boards.
but to get back to subject, so will this profanity filter be additional hardware, or is it going to be something like a live update? have any details come out yet?

I support Microsoft's decision. They might as well completely disable voice chat. It's not that useful anyway. And I wouldn't call silencing "fuck you, nigga" an infringement on free speech, so give it a rest. If you have an issue with a player, teabag 'em. That sends a very clear non-verbal message.
