I've never played Minecraft and I don't intend to.
But then again, I'm a Contrarian...if something is "too popular" I just have an immediate disgust for it.
You should try it. If Minecraft is "too popular" now it's only because it blew so many people away when it started becoming known in 2010. It's no lazy social gaming fad, but one of the most amazing experiences I've ever had in gaming, and like literally nothing else I've ever played.
Personally I don't think the multiplayer mode necessarily shows that off to its best effect, but the survival singleplayer experience is, if it clicks with you, utterly sublime.
Meh, I kind of feel the same way as Sixcess sometimes.
T.V. Tropes: It's Popular, Now It Sucks.
It's kind of like when you have a lot of people doing something you don't get the same "tight nit" experience that you would with less people. Play a MUD sometime and you'll see what I mean.

Mostly though I couldn't get into Minecraft all that much because it values building over exploring and fighting. I'm more of an adventurer type, and while Minecraft has a huge world it doesn't encourage you to explore it (what with the hunger, insta-kill creepers, and lethal 2ft drops...). It's kind of sad in a way because you are tied to your spawn point, and even if you make a bed to rest in you still have to worry about the bed itself getting destroyed and resetting your spawn (unless they fixed that I have no idea... sorry).
Custom maps are nice, but they kind of lost their luster after a while also. Either they were way too simple to the point of boring, or about twice as hard as Dark Souls/Demon Souls.
