I'm really kicking myself for this...

I mean...REALLY KICKING MYSELF...

When I signed up for Xbox live I put my real birth date. Under 18 of course. And then I found out that I couldn't download M rated demos. Simple fix right? Just make another account this one with the age at 23. I figure I can download anything i want with this account. Then the free month of Gold membership ended. Now today I go to download the RE5 demo and what box comes up? Something along the lines of "You can't download this unless you have a gold membership." I swore. A lot.

And now to the real question. Is there anyway I could change my age or other settings to allow me to download M rated content.

No, I've gone as far as calling Microsoft about it. They said you have two options; 1. wait until your 18 or 2. make a new account. I know neither of those options help for downloading RE5 so you get option 3, wait the day or two until it becomes available for silver members, if you read the message closely it said you have to wait a day or two until it is available for silver members. Just be patient, you can still get it you just have to wait a few more days.

Welcome to the Escapist.

Anyway the Xbox live website has a section named "Help" so I'd look there if I was you. The setting can be turned off.

I don't think I've ever used my correct birthdate for those age verification things ever, even after hitting age of legality. They should just have a button labeled "Lie", which randomly generates a birthdate that would put your age somewhere between 21 and 99. That would save everyone a whole pile of energy.

Indeed, thanks for telling me the demo is out, I will go start the download at once sir.

Back on topic, are you sure it is 18 because M games are 17+, unless your from outside of North America, then I don't know, please forgive my ignorance.

I thought the M rating was 17+ not 18 that's AO, although that probably doesn't help matters much now does it?

There's no way to change your age that I know of. I'd just wait 'til it's available to silver members.

I always make myself age 30-35.Usually put birth date like at 1975 and around that area. I commend you for putting your actual date but also laugh at your foolishness(hahahahaha). but that second part really sucks it sucks hard.

The European rating system jams it at 18. Just like you have to be 18 to go to the RE site.

Does anybody else remember when you could still put your birthday as Febuary 31 on websites?

I have the same problem with my XBL account. Luckily I can just download demos and the like on my PS3, where I am exactly three years older.

I'm too paranoid to put in my real birth date so I just flick to something in the 80s. Just make another trail gold account you get up to 7.

I feel your pain. I was extremely pissed off when I found out that I couldn't download a lot of things just because I decided not to lie to Microsoft, even if all parental controls are off. They could have atleast said something when they instituted the change, I never heard anything and wasted about 3 hours of my life first going through all my settings thinking they somehow reset themselves, then searching desperately online for answers, and then asking all my friends if they knew what the fuck is going on.

Fucking bullshit, fuck Microsoft. The really annoying thing is that I almost always make up a birthdate, I only don't lie when I really care about the thing and want to be truthful. Interestingly, the only 2 times I've done this it's backfired on me. First was this case, of course, the second was with Rockstar's Social Club, only after it was launched for awhile and everyone made profiles did they decide that if you're too young to meet the Mature rating for GTA4, you can't access that section of the site anymore!

They fucking wait like that on purpose. Last time I'm truthful with someone I love. And that extends to personal relationships. It's Microsoft and Rockstar's faults.

Here's another example of taking the parenting away from parents.

[sarcasm]
I mean, clearly, parents already don't want their kids playing M games, right?
Wow, I mean, Gears of War in my game library says nothing at all.
Obviously, I shouldn't be allowed to download the F.E.A.R. 2 demo.
Because it's already what my parents want, right?
[/sarcasm]

In all seriousness, I am with you 100%.
I can't even download it with permission from the parent account!
Yeah, Microsoft has too strict of an idea on its conduct.
They should just worry about making money like every other company.

It may sound a bit odd, perhaps you might consider purchasing a gold membership?

This might have been answered as I didn't read all the way to the bottom, but... My brother had this problem but as my age was 18 at the time I had parental control and just enabled him to play any game. So if you still have the other account (the one where your 18) just change the parental consent section, it'll still come up with a warning that it might be inappropriate every time you play but jsut click through and it won't ask for permission from the adult or anything else.
