You kinda entirely missed the point of my post. I don't begrudge the fact that it makes noise. I know that all computer-based technology has fans and fans make noises. The fact that it was pointed out as a + to the console that "Ohhhhhhh it's so quiet! Except when you're playing games on it" is what I'm getting at. That means that if you're using your game console to actually play GAMES, they can't really hold the claim of "It's so quiet!" as one of the selling points now can they?
No, I didn't miss your point. Your point is just pure nonsense and idiocy. You're complaining about the Xbox One obeying the laws of physics instead of being the only electronic device on the planet which doesn't generate heat while used.

No matter how focused on gaming the console is it would be the same way. Having it be quiet while doing other things is still a plus, especially if it's designed to remain on 24/7. There's no downside here. I can't wait for Microsoft to announce that the Xbox One emits magical radiation that makes people immune to AIDS and see you people ***** about it because it's not "focused on games".

Nope. Computers last longer the less heat variations there are. Booting up once and then turning it off causes more strain on the hardware than if you leave the computer running idle for a week. If the heat level remains stable, wear and tear is virtually nonexistent. Well, except for the fans. Moving parts do wear out.
A computer's heat level is not going to remain stable through a week of running. CPU heat changes very quickly whenever it actually starts processing things, and unless you've got a *very* strictly controlled climate you're going to be affected by your ambient temperature. Meanwhile, constant spinning can wear out parts. Industrial products that need to be running 24/7 for 20+ years need to be designed such that they can stay cool without any fans, which will eventually wear out.

For reference, hard drives tend to be rated for 300,000 or so spin up/spin downs. That's over eight years starting it up and shutting it down 100 times a day.
You quoted the wrong guy, I said this:

Holy cow, an Xbox One article without a negative spin? I must be having a stroke.

EDIT: Just to clarify, that isn't a dig at the Escapist. It's just been a rough couple months for MS is all. ;)
To be fair, Microsoft didn't need much spin to look bad. If any, really.

10 year powered life cycle? Is this supposed to be impressive? Because electronics have had decade long powered life cycles for atleast the last 20-30 years, if they are of average quality.
Consoles have higher than standard failure rates. Kinda like how 8 GB of RAM to last us the next 5-8 years is "impressive." It is, but only within the context of the kind of hardware slapped together for a console.

With Microsoft's history of technical issues, it would probably have a 30% chance of GIVING you AIDS. And that would be the bigger issue, my friend.

So now you're ignoring me AND insulting me? Well, I see no point in arguing with someone who's getting drunk off the MS Kool-Aid, so I'll say my piece and you can go back to writing your fan letters to Don Mattrick.

The Xbox One doesn't need to do half the things it boasts doing, since everything it does people already have technology for it to do. As I've said twice now, my issue with this article is that they claim "it's quiet" as a selling point when, in reality, it's not being quiet. Why? Because it has to follow those laws of physics you mentioned, so saying that it's quiet is misleading at best if, as a gamer, you intend to use the system primarily to play games. It's just as misleading as calling the Family Sharing Program anything other than a glorified demo system.

Now that I've repeated myself, I'm sure you'll do the same. As such, I'm pretty sure this conversation is over.

Says the guy blindly following an anti-MS meme to the point where he's complaining about the Xbox One having a fan in it.

Yes, you've repeated yourself, and it's just as nonsensical as it was the first time you said. Everyone who isn't trying to find new and exciting ways to embarrass themselves on an internet forum would rather a system that they're leaving on 24/7 not make noise unless it absolutely has to.

Hmm, 10 years as a life cycle for a machine that is already the weaker of the next gen duo? They really do plan on pushing cloud computing heavily. So "always on" is the correct term to use for the system since any game you'd play on it in a few years would have to be constantly connected to the cloud computing servers to function. That being said, I don't know that Sony doesn't also plan to do this later. They have purchased a company that is capable of cloud computing/streaming but it being so much more powerful will hopefully be able to push that move further back.

Man... looks like this will be the generation that always online gaming will be forced on us under the same guise that EA used with SimCity 5. Only in a few years it will be true whereas EA was lying.

You mean they hired an engineer to design it instead of an artist? That explains why it's so much uglier than the 360, but it also speaks quite well to its potential to not completely die.

P.S. Thanks
I actually find the simple design a lot more pleasing than the past iterations. So it sounds like a subjective thing.

Very refreshing to hear. I've had to buy the PS2 twice and got RROD twice (Both times under the 3-year warranty). I feel like I have some sort of guaranteed system failure when it comes to video game consoles. My Xbox red ringed very fast and I was honestly hoping it'd red ring again just so it'd happen under the warranty...and it did.

To know I'm buying something that can take the tumble my gaming is gonna throw at it is very reassuring. But it's still gonna be awhile after release for me to buy it. Never makes sense to me to buy consoles at launch.

They didn't really mention the life cycle of the next gen console at all. They just said that is designed to be durable enough to last 10 years of being on.
