Holy crap. That was laughably bad.
Screw you, its a satire of mmo's which goes about it by making the story that one of the npc's, Jim, has become self aware as have many others. Anyone who has played an mmo will understad the humor involved. if its not your cup of tea then get the hell out of the tea party.

I liked it, and I already ordered it a month back. Hope it comes soon.
Oh, no. See I'm not saying that I don't understand it. I'm saying that it's bad. As in poorly written. Glad that I could clear this up.
Sir, may I say that you seem to have a very high standard for literature. This is not War and Peace. This is a fun book about an undead man's quest to die, not the next A Tale of Two Cities, so please lighten the fuck up if you don't mind.

Thank you for your time.

At the start of the chapter i thought there was little variation in what words he used.. But after first page that got better.. Then i got into the story, and found it very interesting.. And just could not stop reading until the end.. I would actually like to see this book through, it kept my interest..

Well done..

Eh, if I was to compare this to any Pratchett, and I'm loathe to, it's like the Colour of Magic, before Pratchett really started to shine. Instead of having an interesting story and characters everything here is just used to throw reference after reference out.

I mean, the colour of magic wasn't particularly great, and that's coming from a die hard Pratchett fan. This seems to be a book with all the problems of the colour of magic and none of the charm that it had.

Dull, one joke characters, disjointed events and I have to say his writing style just pulls me right out of getting into the book, when you're using words like "retarded" you just lose me.

I can see definite inspiration from the works of Douglas Adams. It's quite similar in many aspects.

I wish I could read this from the beginning because I was a little confused at first, but once it got going I had quite a few lol moments. This book certainly won't appeal to everyone, but if you've ever played an MMO before, I think you'll get a kick out of it. I can't wait to pick it up now!

For the people who say it sucks, stop complaining already and go write your own damn book about MMOs if you think you can write better.
I wasn't 100% keen myself, but I don't think that people should be able to write better in order to say they thought something was rubbish; I think Stephen King is a terrible writer, but someone must like him that keeps him on the Bestseller list, and I doubt my writing is a patch on what his is to his publishers.

I liked it, some kind strange style of writing, which makes it doubly interesting for me.
I ordered it on suspicion of quality weeks ago (on amazon.de actually :p ) and look forward to get my greedy little fins on that one.

Do you mean to tell me that you can preorder Yahtzee's book from amazon.com and amazon.co.uk?

More to the point though I would pay good money for an unabridged audiobook (read by the author). I have very little time to actually read sadly. Though due to the all the travel my job affords me I have tons of time for audiobooks. In the last year Ive listened to all 14 Wheel of Time books, all 4 of the Song of Ice and Fire books, and am currently on the third book of the Mistborn trilogy.
audiobook? from the guy who is the voice of ZP?

It's 350 pages long, that's about 15 minutes at ZP speed :)

Nah, I'm sure he'd get someone else to read it or find a way to slow himself down to a more narrative friendly style if he did.

EDIT: Had a quick scan of the excerpt, I think I'll give it a shot next time I'm in need of a new book, a fiver's not much to risk on finding a new author I may enjoy.

I agree with the notion that it would likely be better if I knew exactly what was going on. I mean, come on Escapist. You know you're not supposed to run things out of sequence. What are you, Fox? I would have rather had a preview of the first 10 pages like Amazon's "Look Inside" feature.

I'm a bit amazed by Yahtzee. He does his game reviews, writes at least one commentary each week, plays games for review purposes which comes down to cramming as much gaming into x amount of hours as possible, where x is the number of hours he's not writing or recording said reviews and commentarys or taking care of The Mana Bar(You didn't all forget about that, did you?) and yet somewhere along the way he's found time to write a book as well? Granted I'm not much of a reader but I have to wonder, if I may borrow from Yahtzees own repitoire of snappy offhanded comments, if he's not spreading the Branston Pickle a little thin over his own bread.
Don't forget the time he spends making Fun Space Game: The game

I've had my copy on pre-order since he first mentioned it at the end of ZP :)
This preview makes me really excited and wishing that it would hurry up and get released so I can read it :-D

I"ll see how it get?s reviewed But the cover reminds me of LFG .
A morally reprehensible undead warlock accompanied by a persistent bunny rabbit? I can't see the similarity at all.

Well I think your wrong, glad I cleared that up. Really - what were you expecting from Yahtzee? Stephen King? Its a cheap book that is good in its own context.

I'd like to see you do better.
Stephen King isn't very good, either. Granted, he's miles ahead of this, but he's not exactly one of the greats.

You'd like to see me do better? No, you wouldn't. You don't want to see me do better. You just want to act like a petulant child and stick your tongue out at me.

Look, I'm sorry. The language is stilted. It reads like someone who thinks they are clever trying to be clever except that it isn't clever. The dialogue is terrible. It's conversation written by someone who apparently has no idea what people sound like when they talk. Everything about it screams amateur.

Also, it strikes me as strange that some of you are so vehemently defending a man who has made a career out of being insulting against insults. "But, but you're being a big jerk"! Yeah. Okay. Maybe I am. But isn't that why you love this guy so much in the first place? Because he's a big jerk? He's a super troll, and while that's occasionally amusing, it's certainly not a basis to ignore his own failings. He's a bad writer. This is really bad.

I think what we need here is for you to take an example from the text, which you qualifies as badly written, or a conversation which you believe is wrongly phrased, i.e. not how people sound when they talk.

Maybe then we can get a little further than this:

"it sucks"

"no it's great"

"no it sucks!"

oh come on there's got to be somewhere in it where you went "this is poor writing, it would have been better phrased like this".
