Yakuza Producer Unveils Robot Murder Simulator

The producer of Sega's Yakuza series hopes to appeal to a worldwide audience with sci-fi shooter Binary Domain.

Continuing the trend of Japanese developers attempting to appeal to audiences both on their shores and overseas, extremely tan Yakuza [http://www.amazon.com/Yakuza-3-Playstation/dp/B0030GBSUC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1291311191&sr=1-2] producer Toshihiro Nagoshi has announced a new upcoming shooter called Binary Domain. The game will mix the styles of both East and West to ideally create something that the entire world can enjoy.

Binary Domain takes place in 2080's Tokyo during a raging conflict between humans and robots. While the basic concept might sound trite by now, Nagoshi hopes to incorporate a "deep human drama" the revolves around the concept of "life" and what it really is. In Binary Domain, robots have "permeated" human society and drive the world's industries. It hasn't been revealed yet why they turn on humans, or vice-versa.

Though we haven't seen any gameplay either, players will surely be forced to use lots of cover while facing legions of robot enemies. All that's been mentioned about Binary Domain's gameplay so far is its enemy AI, which Nagoshi and his team expects to be at the "top level of what can be done on current hardware." Sega says that the concept of "life" is also tied into this AI, which will "make the battlefield a more compelling experience than ever before and players will have to plan their moves strategically and carefully in order to progress through the hostile environments of the game." Binary Domain will also have an online component that Nagoshi says will "make you better feel a connection with other players" than other online titles. We'll see.

Binary Domain's first trailer replicates an overused concept at first, showing off a stereotypical human squad kicking robot butt and face (though that boss is awesome), but things change when the camera pans up to the robot society living above the ruined lower level of Tokyo. The creepy robot woman wearing only half of a human body holding what may or may not be a robot baby makes me think that Nagoshi could be putting together something interesting for Binary Domain's story. With more unsettling robotic scenes, Binary Domain could be worth taking a look at when it comes to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sometime in 2011, but it also might be a good idea to tone down what feels to me like a somewhat overdone appeal to "western tastes."

that's actually pretty fucking cool, I'll be looking forward to this

port this and bayonetta to pc plox

you don't even need to make bayonetta from scratch, just modify DMC4, after all, it's the same director =P

"PAY ATTENTION FOO!"

DMC1 and Bayonetta share the same director. Not DMC4 and Bayonetta.

Anyway, count me on the hype train.

I am intrigued, but no indication of even a possible PC version starts to kill any anticipation I might have for it. PC version or not I do think I'll still keep a lookout for it.

Well, the squad is pretty damn sterotypical ("Let the good times roll"...ugh, really?) but that last bit was pretty cool. If you read the subtitles of the news(which I just realized is in Japanese, even though the squad speaks English) it sounds like Robots have taken over the world, and there's some kind of resistance movement going on in the weird "lower city" area.

I guess that's pretty cool. It has potential.

No, PC version so I don't care. Stil, the quais-philisophical talk around the game is a bad sign to me anyway.

So it's gears of war right down to the overly muscular black stereotype?

Oh well, if the gameplay is at all referenced in the trailer a la more melee options I'd be up for it. Or more squad based multiplayer with a heavy, medium and light style of soldier.

I'm not impressed with this. Ignoring the fact that the white guy's face is far to similar to the new James Bond's face (which is just cringe worthy in my book of "crap that gets sales") this game looks like its going to be just another muscle bound steroid trip down carnage avenue with robots replacing aliens, nazis, russians, or 'X' race that's on the west's proverbial shit list.

I think I'll let this slip quietly under my radar much like I have every shooter.

What I got from that trailer's opening was: here are three completely unlikeable characters.

At first I thought it was just lazy writing, but after seeing the whole thing--maybe all three of them are such cliched jerks because they're the bad guys.

Looks like it's going to be horribly written. Just like most Westen Cinema. Maybe Japan should stop focusing on U.S. appeal and take a look at the Brits. Maybe we can have a Christopher Nolan Style game...

This is meant to appel to Western audiences? Well it has the two hyper-masculine space marine types there, so maybe they are right. I for one am tired of the big bad black tough man and the Chris Redfield meat-head hero. I thought I was watching Gears of War.

If the TRAILER is badly written, you can bet your ass that the game is going to be badly written. Seriously- I cringed....a lot. "Let the good times roll"....that's ROFL hilarious. If they think catering to western audiences means throwing a couple of terribly done Mr. T references......
And did anybody else notice how shitty the robots' aim was? They had clear shots like 10 times because of these three jackass' cocky and over the top tactics and they missed every bullet.

So.. is it the early stages of the human-robot war in the animatrix?

--edit: Otherwise, the trailer is weak and full of boring cliches. So.. not really interesting.

Robots capable of walking around that easily should have superhuman aiming, ultrafast reaction times and be a lot stronger than puny humans. Also, they break down from a measily fall? They are future supercomputers encased in metal, and that metal probably won't be aluminum foil!

I hate it when people think this is what future robots will be like.
They will realistically be so much faster and stronger than humans that we will be crushed and hunted a la Terminator. They won't downplay all their amazing strenghts to play fair with us meatbags, so think twice when building robot soldiers, military leaders!

Exactly! For a computer a.k.a. robot humans stand still 99% of the time, so slow we react and move compared to them. Shooting even a master acrobat will be a piece of cake for a 2080 robot.
