Oh jeez, That's not the milking free to play MMO's are known for. That isn't even squeezing orange juice and tossing the lumpy once-fruit in the trash. That is taking all the oranges and cows excited for Bungie's first post Halo game, shoving them in a giant blender, and leaving in on overnight. Activision wants a guarantee they'll get that half a billion dollars back, as soon as possible too. The sequels are supposed to fit into the shared universe MMO aspect.
Other MMOs have vastly updated or completely changed themselves with expansion packs and free patches. They could have made major DLC every few months, and maybe release one more game as a last resort. If they do go the multi-game route, Bungie better knock this one out of the park.
