I don't really have a problem with smokers, so long as they're polite about it (Like you seem to be), and show some self control while in other people's homes/businesses I'm fine with them. The only real 'problem' I have is that I find smokers extremely unattractive (which is a problem with me not them), that smell just... just no.

True story: The Third Reich was one of the first governments, and the first major government, to outlaw smoking inside government buildings.

So, yeah, smoking is worse than Nazism, right?

I'm confused. What exactly are you trying to achieve? I get bored as well sometimes so I watch T.V or listen to music, I don't slowly kill myself. I'm not perfect there are many vices that I indulge in, I eat food that is bad for me and drink (though not excessively). With these things though I don't then spit that into the faces of those around me. That is the main reason I don't like smokers as the large majority that I have met have at some point done this to someone. But you seem to have already addressed these issues and are instead questioning those who claim to hate smokers for pointless reasons, so basically you are pigeonholing a small minority of idiots and then disproving their irrational arguments, but for what reason? To make yourself feel better about your decisions? It just seems pointless.

If you understand the risks of smoking and do it anyway, that is completely fine, it's your body you can do what you want to it. If you don't smoke around non smokers when they don't want you to then you aren't really hurting anyone else by doing it, so then it comes down to whether you feel like your doing something wrong. If you don't then why post this thread at all? And if you do then maybe you should figure it out for yourself instead of seeking comfort on the internet from people you don't know.

I've dealt with a lot of the type of people OP is referring to.. I smoked for...umm *thinks* 14 years now give or take, and don't regret a day of it, but it's just gotten so damned expensive that I don't feel like spending the money on it, so I've actually switched to the electronic cigs now. Honestly I like those even better, the flavor is amazing, it doesn't cause a sore throat if you do it too much, and I just started filling my own cartridges which is gonna cost me maybe $20 a month, which is beautiful.

(plus..to be honest i take great joy in driving the militant non-smokers insane because you can use them practically anywhere, I still get dirty looks, but I can just look back at them, puff on it and say "what? it's water vapor..no harmful chemicals and doesn't even have an odor to it" offline trolling at it's finest)

personally, I hate the stereotypical talk against smokers. One of the most obvious reasons a person smokes is because it helps to relax the nerves or pain a person feels. Could some people be more sensitive to the smoke? Sure just like some people are more sensitive to bee stings than others.
Does a non-smoker have a "right" to tell a smoker not to smoke in an inclosed space like an elevator or subway/train or in certain clubs? Sure, but mostly because it's in many people faces in such a tight spot.
Does a non-smoker have the right to tell a smoker to not smoke in an open space like a bus stop or park or parking lot? Heck no! The non-smoker can move their own selfish but a few steps away from the smoke. I've smelled BO from individuals far worse than cigarette smoke. Don't even start about getting "cancer" from 2nd hand smoke for if that was true, there would be tons of smokers in hospitals for cancer because they smoked for years, but there are only a handful at best. It's a popular theory, but still needs far more facts before it is true.

I don't smoke. I don't really need to smoke. But that does not give me permission to talk **** about people for such a basic habit that can be easily walked away from if it bothered me.

I feel that if you want to smoke thats fine but if you're bothering other people with it then you should try, within reason, to accommodate them. This applies to everything, like if I was in my dorm room blasting music its my responsibility to keep the music down so I dont bother the other residents too much. You are the one who decided to smoke so you should bear the responsibility to not bother others. I dont see whats so hard about that with regards to smoking, its understood for almost everything else.

Related to that, I hate people who smoke in line, no one around can move because then they'd lose their spot. All I ask is that people be a little considerate of others and everything will work out fine.

Like i said, a case by case scenario for smoking. Loud music to me is not a big deal if done in the middle of the day. At night it is a whole different story. People need to sleep for work the next day the majority of the time. Interrupting their sleep for your own selfish reasons is called being a "prick". Now if you decided to live near a fair ground area it is your own damn fault for living so close. Open space area like a park or bus stop I won't complain about smoking because it is easy for me to move away. If it is waiting in line or inside a stationary area like a movie or sport stadium it is a completely different story.

There is a difference between going around an individual who is smoking and going directly to the smoker and forcing your own ideals on him. "Health Issues" from 2nd hand smoke differs per individual. If the smoker was blowing smoke in your face than yeah...he/she should be punched in the face. But if your directly confronting the individual you can easily walk away from or step a few feet away from than your being a conceited bunhole.

Edit: Damn I made this too long. How about I just say that the dangers of smoking is exaggerated for the fear factor and that it is quite easy to step away from smokers, if the smell bothers you, in most cases.

Seriously though I am still in the position of wondering why people smoke. I would discourage people from doing it but I don't have a direct problem with it so long as the person smoking isn't anywhere near anyone else. But tell me, do most smokers bother to keep far away from any place where other people that don't want to breathe in the stuff are? No, and because of that I tend to dislike smokers as a whole. Even if you aren't in peoples' faces about it, can you really say that you have never forced second hand smoke upon a non smoker?

I guess you need to quantify how far away is 'far enough.' I used to smoke in my squad car (can't anymore) but never when there was another person around. I smoke in my house, because I live alone. I smoke in my car, but never if I'm driving someone who doesn't smoke.
I don't smoke in restaurants, even those that allow smoking, I don't smoke in bars, and I don't smoke in airports.
This isn't an isolated incident, either; anyone I know who smokes follows the same etiquette.

Simply far enough away that no one else inhales it (at least not noticeably, to do it completely would be virtually impossible). If you manage to remain in your car and at home that should be mostly fine so long as the windows are down or you are there aren't any passers by that might breathe it in. Even so that isn't that big of an issue. What I have more of a problem with is people that smoke on the sidewalk.

I don't mind if people want to smoke so long as they do it considerately. That is, don't smoke indoors in a public place, and don't breathe the smoke at other people. Also, smoking JUST outside the door of a non-smoking place is as bad as smoking inside it. Please just step a couple steps away?

I don't mind if you want to damage your health. Just don't force-damage mine. (That was a general 'you', not specifically directed to the OP).

I don't think smoking makes you a bad person or brands you as an ex con. It's just a personal choice. However, it is a personal choice that can impact *very* negatively on people around you, so it should be used with caution and consideration in public spaces.

I have worked alongside smokers and the thing that really annoys me about them is the fact that they feel the need to go out the back and have a cigarette every 30 minutes. If I had a 5 minute break every half an hour, I'd get fired.

There's nothing wrong with it as long as i)You're respectful about keeping your space from others who don't want to be inhaling your smoke, ii)You're honest with yourself and others with the effects of smoking, and iii)Smoking is a low enough priority for you that it doesn't come before other important things (growing up, I knew a family who couldn't afford to keep their house repaired, yet the parents still each smoked 3 packs a day).

Admittedly, one of my friends started smoking about a year ago, and I was a bit surprised at first, and I heckle him from time to time about it (we'll be studying, and I'll say stuff like 'hey, lung cancer is now the number X killer in Canada), and I would prefer if he stopped, since I view it as paying to shorten your life, but he's still my friend and it's his choice, so I don't begrudge him for it.

I started smoking for absolutely no reason when I was 16, then quit cold turkey six years later over Christmas Break 2007, when a price hike hit tobacco in the United States (I could get two packs of Marlboro Reds for $6.50 USD then, and I can't even get one pack for that price now).

As an ex-smoker, I don't get the appeal of smoking at all. What drove me to quit (more than the absurd price hike) was the realization that smoking was simply an addiction to nicotene and nothing more. The claims that they're calming, and indeed every other rationalization for doing it, are 100% false and are a placebo effect; working because you think they do. You are only satisfying an addiction when you light up, and the nicotene in a cigarette is no different from a shot of heroin or a line of crack.

That said, I don't personally give a rat's ass if people smoke or not. What everyone seems to have forgotten is that you have the freedom to do whatever you want, and that includes smoking. All of the anti-smoking propaganda is ridiculous, and the extent legislation is going to preventing smokers from lighting up is on the far side of ludicrous.

I used to make it a point to intentionally blow a huge cloud of smoke at some soccer mom giving me a dirty look when I smoked, much the same way I tap my brakes for a tailgater and watch them drop back 100 feet or slide into the ditch. Good times, indeed.

Speaking as a former daily smoker, and now an on and off again smoker I know where you're coming from. And some people really do need to buzz off and mind their own business...however some of them do have a point. I know several rude smokers who don't follow any rules, blow smoke in peoples face, or smoke right before going inside somewhere despite being asked not to.

I think if everyone was just more considerate it wouldn't be a problem, but we all know that's never gonna happen

I'm a smoker but here in the Netherlands nobody really cares about it I guess.
I have both smoker and Non-smoker friends and they get along just fine and I never get lectured by random people.
My only smoking rule is don't smoke when there are kids around and if you must go outside.

As for your problem you know the risks and you made your choice stick with it and if someone has a problem with that, well then it's literally their problem.

No beef with smokers. It's your own choice and I tend to give the benefit of the doubt to users of products that create chemical addictions.
Now cigarette COMPANIES are evil assholes.
I don't mind it if someone does that, but when you are specifically manufacturing a product scientifically proven to not only be chemically-addicting but also kill you as a side-effect of its primary use, you are a heartless monster who should choke on his own production line.
