You ever liked a game that Yahtzee didn't?

HEY Portal is a good game. I like it

OT: I don't know, I liked Spore it was ok, yahtzee seemed to hate it. I felt like the creature stage and civ stage were too short. And that tribal is like jumping in a bareel of dynamite with a lit match, but i liked it.
I never said it wasn't a good game, I love portal, only valve game I do like, my point was I couldn't think of any others HE liked.

Yahtzee's not a game reviewer. He's a critic. He can enjoy the crap out of a game, but will still nitpick a game to death. Face it. He's even noted that his ratings tend to drop when he's nice to a game so, no matter what, he HAS to spew some bile at the game.

I love Halo 3, and disagree with his claim that a game shouldn't be bought for the online alone because that was the reason i bought it and havent regretted it
i love dead space, he mildly enjoyed it. dont think i disagree with anything he says actually. even super smash bros brawl, which he hated, i could understand WHY he said all the things he did

it depends. His opinions on FPS and horror and sandbox games and the like are generally spot on and very well reasoned and grounded. I do appreciate his take on them and his ability to see past the hype to the general flaws of the game.

His review of more abstract game-styles like RPGs and such however always seem to come from the fact that he reviews them -as if they were FPS or sandbox games- and not -as the games they are.- To me, it is like reviewing a rom-com and poking fun at the lack of zombies or laser beams. Or reviewing an action movie and saying that the composition and depth of metaphor needs to be explored.

It's a review based on the ignorance of what characterizes a genre, and as such, it makes it very hard for me to follow his reviews. Valkyria Chronicles was a prime example. He's deriding the game for being a turn based abstract strategy game, which is like deriding chess for -being like chess.- It isn't a fair criticism, and that's when I stop taking what he says seriously.

His "reviews" still cause me to check out games even if I hadn't heard of them (and even if the reviews are bad). In other cases, when he covers games I already own, I generally find them lol-worthy - I dont think Ive ever based a game choice off of his words though. I see his reviews as just a bit of fun to make you smile.

Psychonauts was one. Now that you mention it I can't think of anything else.

Yahtzee and I have massively different tastes in games---my favorite game of all-time (Rome: Total War) is his all-purpose whipping boy whenever he wants to point out that he doesn't like RTS (or strategy games in general).

I can't imagine he'd be interested in Paradox games, trade sims, or business/tycoon games either. Meanwhile, I can't stand shooters, they bore the living crap out of me even when they are unquestionably good games (I appreciate Half-Life 2's technical mastery but that doesn't mean I find it any fun to play.) I do, however, agree with Yahtzee that the quick-time event is the single worst design decision currently extant in gaming.

They are fun! And to me, that's what comes first.
euh he didn't hate Gears 2

He just found that there we're way to many chest high walls
True, he didn't hate it. But I didn't really have the same problems he had. Except for the go over and pat Dom on the head and all his bullets wounds seal up and he's a-ok.
He thought the chainsaw was overpowered in the campaign, making the game too easy.

I'd like to see him try this tactic on Hardcore or Insane.

Of course. Yahtzee hates on pretty much all the games he reviews.

If you bought games based on his reviews then you would be left with very few and unvaried games.

Every once and a while, usually when a storyline takes one hell of a left turn, he (and a lot of other people) digs into Indego Prophecy.

With the full understanding of all the shortcomings of that game, I love it, much like how he loves Silent Hill 2.
