I ditched Gmail recently in favour of an Outlook.com address - very swish, and ties in nicely with my Windows phone and Windows 8 installations. I find the Outlook interface a lot more interesting than the Gmail one but that could be because Ive grown use to Gmail over the years and the Outlook gui is just a fresh change.

Consider that most if not all Android phones (don't quote me on this as I'm just guessing seeing how I was force to use gmail to use the online feature on my Android), this doesn't suprise me.

I remember when Hotmail was second only to AOL as the most spam-filled, privacy-leaking email service in the world. I have a 12-14 year old (I can't remember when I made it) dump account with them and while the service has improved dramatically, it's still crushed under a dozen spam emails a day. I'm guessing this old stigma isn't doing the Hotmail brand many favors.

Give me hotmail any day. Gmail can burn in hell. It is a horrible design and hard to use. I only have gmail because of youtube, throw off email account, my school email uses Gmail and for a club that I run but only because the previous president created it.
Do you enjoy your hotmail spam?

GMail's design is just fine. I like having an inbox that doesn't try to sell me Viagra or get me to help some Nigerian prince.
What spam. Oh you mean all that stuff that just gets deleted right away by hotmail. All the spam I get is in my gmail account.

Had no choice but to get a Gmail because Google won't allow you to sign in without having a Gmail account anymore. *sigh*
I still primarily use my yahoo account that I made 8 years ago and only check my Gmail once a month. Although I've noticed that I've not gotten any spam in my Gmail inbox.

I find this interesting because... Honestly, I wanna know, this frequency of Gmail use... how much of it is people switching over to gmail because they actually like it, and how much of it is Googles stupid branding that practically makes gmail a ness. evil with things like Youtube (which google ruined) and Android Marketplace.

Seriously without those aspects... would anyone use it at all? It was completely redundant to open a new email client. Cross platform connectivity is nice but hardly justification for gmails existence.

I've pretty much bought into the whole Google ecosystem at this point. I have three or four Gmail accounts, use Google Calendar for all my scheduling, and am making heavy use of Google Drive. And I can do it all from my Android phone too.

But I still have a 14 year old Hotmail account I keep as a spam filter, or to sign up for sites.

That's funny, I've always used hotmail and I don't get those e-mails... Could it be that I'm just not completely ignorant and remembered to set my junk filter to "exclusive"?

There is no such thing as "hotmail spam"; Spam is spam regardless of the e-mail client you use.
Hotmail's security against junk mail is still garbage compared to Gmail. Even with setting up the junk filtering.

I've yet to be asked for credit card info with my GMail account in sketchy e-mail. That and I didn't need to set set up junk filtering personally to prevent spam either. And I've actually had my GMail account longer than my Hotmail account if that says anything.

Wait, people used hotmail? This is news to me... I could never keep an account open for more than a month or two (which is also why I could never use GFWL, even on those rare occasions when I wanted to).

I used the yahoo account I made in high school (made it in 1998, if I recall correctly) right up to last year when their spam filter failed on me.

The real reason these are leading is because their other services make emails non optional.
At least gmail is a decently presentable service where as hotmail... dear fucking christ I've seen porn sites with less spam then bloody hotmail, even bloody MS sends you spam mail.

I never used hotmail. I had one with lycos and excite (then they changed), and I would up with gmail because I like how it integrates with my phone and tablet. What I don't like is how google wants to tie together all of my accounts with youtube, gmail, and G+ (of which I have no interest at all) and destroying igoogle next year.

gmail is pretty fast and very practical though. I, for one, am glad I switched.

Actually, I deleted my Gmail (and all Google accounts) and switched to GMX a month or two ago. Why? I like my things to be compartmentalized. I want my email to just be my email. But then they tied Gmail accounts to Youtube accounts, while also putting you in Google plus (I discovered I mysteriously had a Google plus account when I was trying to figure out how to separate my Youtube and Gmail) without asking you. No. I don't like the direction they are going in, so I deleted my Google accounts and went somewhere where my email can just be my email.
Still using two hotmail accounts since 2004 and I've been happy since using them.

On the other hand while I am happy with G+ (I use it daily and formed quite a lot of friends since it started last year) I'm not exactly happy they linked G+,Gmail and YT all together because a friend of mine got the domino effect when his G+ got suspended and then banned he was locked and cut off from using all 3 services his email was tied it which is why I'll always use a different email service like Hotmail.

Also I'm not a huge fan of trying everything together as one since it's much easier to get locked out of using all services when they all act as one.

I still use hotmail. I can check my hotmail instantly and it updates all the time thanks to the email app of windows 8.

Hopefully google will come up with something similar and then i will switch
