I'm stoked to see how many Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 entries are in this thread. I know 2 used to get all the love, but I thought 3 was a much more polished up game. Plus, it had a bigger console to work with.

Someone just mentioned Burnout! To go back an adjust my list... or not to....

Its funny, you can tell how old somebody is by there list.

It makes me sad that so few of the younger generation have played anything besides modern games.

Its kinda the same as being a movie buff, and never seeing anything made before 2003....

I understand It can be hard, since there was no bloom effect, bumpmaping, or havoc physics.
so if you don't own a pair of nostalgia goggles, Its hard too get into them.
the only way to really appreciate old games is to dedicate some time to just playing ps1 era games for like a month.
Only then can you see things in context.

But its worth it.
And at the very least ,when you get back ,you'll have a deeper appreciation for all the technology and work that went into rendering the MWCODBO2 Newbs head that you just Pw0ned as you t-bag it.

In no special order.

Final Fantasy IX
Final Fantasy VII
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy IV
Dynasty Warriors 7
Warriors Orochi 3
Kessen 3
Timesplitters 3
Skyrim
Metal Gear Solid
Romance of the Three Kingdoms 11

Hogs of War
Dissidia Duodecim 012 Final Fantasy

Though honestly, I could easily fill the list with Final Fantasy and Three Kingdoms related games if I wanted.
I know I have likely missed an assload of games I love, but off the top of my head this will do.

Here's my list, some of it might come as a surprise, some of it absolutely won't. I haven't spent long and hard thinking about this, but I love all of these games with almost shameful passion.

TIER 1: TOP DOG TIER FOR THE TOPPEST OF DOGS
1. No More Heroes (Wii/PS3)
2. Resident Evil 4 (Wii)
3. Bastion (PC)
4. Spyro: Year of the Dragon (PS1)
5. Tetris (Pff...)

TIER 2: BADASS TIER FOR THE BADDEST OF ASSES
6. The Walking Dead (PC)
7. Dear Esther (PC)
8. The Void (PC)
9. PAYDAY: The Heist (PC/PS3)
10. Fallout 3 (PC/PS3)

TIER 3: COOL KID TIER FOR THE COOLEST OF KIDS
11. Portal 2 (PC/PS3)
12. Driver: San Francisco (PC)
13. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2)
14. Hotline Miami (PC)
15. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory (PC)

TIER 4: A TIER
16. Far Cry 2 (PC/PS3)
17. MotorStorm: Pacific Rift (PS3)
18. Amnesia: The Dark Descent (PC)
19. The Binding of Isaac (PC)
20. Just Cause 2 (PC/PS3)

I know there are a couple of PS1-2 era games that I've got lying in my cupboard that I would definitely throw onto this list if I saw them, but I can't remember what they are for the life of me. The reason that I owned a lot of these games on two systems is that when I finally got a gaming PC, I ended up repurchasing most of my favourite games on Steam.

I didn't really grow up with nintendo, sega or the early pc heyday, so I guess this list is tilted towards more recent games, but nonetheless, these are the games I enjoy to this day. also, if I had been allowed, the Mass Effect Trilogy as a whole would have occupied the number one spot, leaving room for one more game: Portal.

Hmmm Hard to say, I've played so many good games. My list would probably wind up looking something like this:

Wasteland
Wizardry Bane Trilogy (Bane Of The Cosmic Forge, Crusaders Of The Dark Savant, Wizardry 8)
Ultima (series)
Master Of Magic
Alpha Centauri
Civilization (series)
Fallout (series)
Warlords Battlecry 3
Shin Megumi Tensei (series)
The World Ends With You
Final Fantasy (VI through X)
Sacred 2
World Of Warcraft
Star Wars: Galaxies
Star Trek Online
The Secret World
Quest For Glory (series)

Those are games off the top of my head I really loved/love, it can be more or less than 20 depending on how you want to break down series. As much as I like a lot of other series like say "Silent Hill" I can't really bring myself to give them a "best of all time" recommendation, sort of like the "Tales" games. Likewise, I play a lot of top down, action RPGs, however despite it's problems I think "Sacred 2" did more to move that type of game along than any other game out there, to the point where I've simply been disappointed by games like "Diablo 3" and "Torchlight" for not having been able to do as much. Prior to Sacred 2 my favorite would have been "Divine Divinity" for similar reasons, but I think Sacred 2 managed to do even better.

This is true, but can older gamers appreciate new games too or is it always nostalgia that takes priority? I've seen some antiquated top 20 lists out there (not so many here, seems more balanced).

Thing is, there's so many games coming out there's no time to go back. You're bombarded with better graphics, more realistic physics and when it comes to picking up a 20 year old pixellated game that hasn't been hyped as the latest thing, we aren't interested. Until we actually DO pick it up and realize there's some brilliant stuff out there.

Twenty? I'm going to have to think well on this one, I can't wait to see the end result:

Dark Souls
Demon's Souls
Katawa Shoujo
Shadow of the Colossus
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Resident Evil 2
Silent Hill 2
Final Fantasy IV
Journey
Mass Effect 1
Planescape: Torment
Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Mario Bros 3
No More Heroes 2
Fallout 3
Red Dead Redemption
Skate 3
Rock Band 3
Persona 3 (probably 4 once I actually play it)

That was harder than it should have been...
