They can be a little if they're really flashy or have really long animation sequences, but it's no big deal. The avatars that are just small loops I have no issue with at all.

My avatar is perfect and GOAT and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Maybe for the long loops looks at TopazFusion but that's minor compared to those that change theirs radically from their previous version without some sort of continuous identifier like Vault's Dog, Shrekfan's j-pop and Tacos er, taco.

Hence why the Imperial Aquila pops up in mine.

I wouldn't mind an animated avatar of my own... but, I have no idea what I want to be animated to begin with...

With that said, other people's avatars don't distract me one bit...

It's them titles that distract me the most... So many Infamous Scribblers... *hides in the imaginary corner*

I can't see animated avatars or just anything unique anymore. All I see is Bieber. I'm not sure what happened, but I didn't clear my cache for a long time after the April Fools shenanigans, and when I finally did, every avatar was still his face.

...someone...please...help me...

My avatar is expressing his entirely valid political opinions, and it's free speech so you can't stop him.

In all seriousness though, I love the fact that gifs are allowed to animate, it's a bit of a throwback to the 90's internet but still. If you share a gif on somewhere like facebook it won't animate in place, which is completely stupid as that's the only reason you would use the gif format (unless you were trolling people into believing it was animated when it wasn't).

I rarely notice people's avatars, animated or not. Only really flashy ones catch my eye, and even then they seldomly annoy me.

Side note, I want to change mine back to an older one, but I can't because all of a sudden the Escapist actually started to enforce avatar size rules. Sad panda. :/

I'm used to being distracted & used to being distracting.

I usually look at the avatars & then read the posts.

I haven't watched Comedy Central in a long time. I'd love to know what episode of the Colbert Report this is, because it looks like something I need to be watching right now.

So many are animated that I barely even notice anymore. Which reminds me, my avatar is still Christmas themed... I should probably get on to changing that.

Edit: Christmas Dean begone! Super magician Gob go!

I just have a static avatar, mostly because I wanted to make one of the Krampus spanking the shit out of Dr. Venture but the frame is too small to capture the action correctly...

I find that a lot, most of the time I'll even scroll a little bit further down the page so someone's avatar isn't distracting me from the corner when I've read the bit parallel to it.

I only find them distracting when they happen to be sexy ladies or something of the sort.
Like the guy with the gif about the sexy Dragon's Crown sorceress. You know the one.
I have been summoned!

What's distracting about my avatar?
Well it is linked to a controversy, but somehow I doubt that's what people are talking about. What you do is far far worse. You make people think about there icky parts.

Oh dear, you pushed the button. Does nobody heed warning signs anymore? Here, to fix it, click the spiral button under my avatar.

It's an episode from a while back, at least 2 years I think. I wish I could remember better so I could look it up, but I cannot.

I hate them, especially the anime ones which tend to be very dramatic sharp movements with flashing images.

Mine's more hypnotic than overly distracting I think, the acid cat is here to stay. It might just be me being used to them, but I really don't get very distracted by little flashy images. Even the most epileptic fit-inducing avatar doesn't bother me beyond initially seeing it's there.

Count yourself lucky I don't use the 'Jesus Quintana repeatedly licking a bowling ball' avatar I use elsewhere.

I kinda like them (well, most of them...looking at you, lacktheknack. >.>) and I'm sorta jealous of those that have gifs. I can't draw or animate worth a crap, so I usually just stick with preset avatars...I swear, one of these days, I'm gonna have to commission something from an artist...

Not to worry Vault- we all love yah and shall always remember your beautiful creations.
I also would like to mention that you're one of the few users whom has a trend going in their Avatar so without that dog... people give you a hard time like when I don't include frappes in mine XD. It's a blessing, and a curse.

I love animated avatars, I even learnt how to make them myself (thanks to Caramel Frappe).
I remember when you were first starting out. You progressed quite quickly and now your Avatars are good quality (plus it's actually in NICE quality without that fuzzy crap you see in most GIFs.) I appreciate you, Aero, Legion, Exius, staika, ect. helping me out in the Avatar Store is a huge 'feels good man' feeling.

You should of seen the post i've made about Avatars. I forget what the topic of said thread was... but I went into such detail that it ended up being a paragraph and more of just saying how wonderful/beautiful Avatars are. I got quoted a few times afterwards- people saying that seeing me being all into Avatars to such an extent was a rare sight XD haha.
I always really loved your avatars; you've put so much effort into them, and they make me laugh sometimes (like the FRAPPEQUEST you've got going on now).....Wait a sec...

Well, every time I change my avatar to something else, I'm met with a chorus of people telling me to change it back again.

So I couldn't possibly comment.
I'm the leader of that choir!

Anyway...

Back onto the topic on hand

I've only run into a few avatars here that were truly distracting me from the post I was reading and in those circumstances I hit ESC to stop it. However, I've never let the avatar of the person who's post I'm reading colour my interpretation of the text. Usually their writing does that after the first paragraph or so.

I do have a more permanent solution for you if the animated avatars do truly bother you. In your profile under "Forum and Notification options" you can disable all avatars. If you just want the animated avatars gone and not the static ones... Well, I'm sorry to say that it won't happen. I've had this avatar since 2010 and I don't ever plan on changing it.

As to what I think it adds to the personality I want to present? Quite honestly, I think it is an indicator that I don't mean to take these forums or myself seriously at all times. Let's lighten up here people!

Also Zapdos is my favorite Pokemon, this avatar has come to represent me here, etc, etc.

It really depends on the individual avatar. Some animated avatars are quite nice, but some of them are... unique. Yes. Unique sounds like a reasonable polite reply. I considered going for an animated one for a while, but I can't be bothered with making one.

Am i just being Grandpa Simpson here? Does anyone agree?
Yes.
Don't want to be a dick here but if you get distracted from reading short sentences by a small moving picture you have bigger problems to worry about. It's just a neat little feature to let people show off things they like. There are limits to the size and length so if you keep watching it after one loop or so then it's probably your own fault.
