I prefer to play as the guy who can walk alone into a room full of people who hates his guts, then walk out with an army... i.e. The 100 Speech guy

Also known as the Lelouch Lamperouge Method

Combatwise i'll take anything that lets me actually fight rather than sitting at the back using magical artillery and shitting themselves whenever anything bigger than a rat starts to attack them.

I eventually play every class in a game, just to find out which one I like. Usually, the mage class is my favorite with the more damaging powers, then the warrior class and rogue tie for second place. They're not as flashy for me.

I love mages. :3

I'm a rogue, and an archer when given the option. I rarely play as a mage or warrior-type. In Mass Effect 2, I'm a Vanguard. It feels like a rogue to me. You charge in and do some serious damage while the enemy is disoriented then move to the next enemy.
Tom Waits! Nice!

OT: I generally play a rogue class. I like being a quick character that can dismantle enemies while not being the focus of enemy fire. I played a rogue first time through in both Dragon Age games, and my main in WoW is a rogue. I just love the class in general. Dual wielding, fast striking melee characters that have the ability to not be seen at all. What's cooler than that?

I always play melee warriors, give me a big ass sword and a tonne of armour, I don't tend to min/max, although I will spend ages looking at stats to make sure that I'm don't have any wasted stats.

I find I can adapt to any play style, but I do not reach the level of high proficiency other, more focus players reach with a certian playstyle. I diversify my gaming style for max enjoyment from variety.

I like Warrior / Fighter. That's what I usually go for.
I'm quite good with Magic Users too in games.
I am crap with Rogues though despite it being fun to sneak sneak.
May I suggest TES (my personal favourite being Morrowind) if you haven't played it yet? Mostly since the game lets you play a spell-chucking axe-wielding viking in plate mail without the slightest drawback. Would be a decent way to play both at the same time.

As for stealth, agreed. I suspect it's mostly since stealth in many games is terrible. Only RPG I've seen to date that gets it right is Incursion, and that's an unfinished roguelike.

I tend to build charismatic characters so that I always have options. If I feel like picking a fight in Mass Effect, I can do that or just as easily defuse the situation.

I also tend to go with quick and efficient styles of play. For example, I use the Hunter class in Borderlands so that I can easily snipe anybody out in the open or use my bloodwing against anybody abusing cover. And in Mass Effect, I use the Sentinel class so I can use my powers to adjust to any situation and my all-powerful pistol to weed out enemies quickly.

You may not because I utterly hate Morrowind.
Needless to say, that game was never kind to me whenever I would try it out.
I like Oblivion but if I'm going to be of the Fighter-Class, then I refuse to use Magic unless I'd go specifically for a Mage-class.
...Right. Sorry, didn't know that.

I'll shut up and head back to my corner, then.

You didn't, now that I take another look. Sorry, tired and a little stressed.

If you're okay with somewhat poor graphics (most aren't ASCII, at least) and unforgiving difficulty (play to mess around, not to win, or it'll get old fast), I stand by my sorta-recommendation of roguelikes.

They tend to make melee rather interesting as well as easy to play (granted, mostly "I hit it again", but it's not exactly lacking in stuff to think about), and mages, while harder to play, are very interesting. Often gets a neater spell selection than standard RPGs, too.

Crawl is fairly easy to get into, and has a tutorial. Incursion is vaguely D&D-based, quite interesting if unfinished (still playable), and the casting loses the, uh, stupid side from D&D. Tanks get a whole bunch of interesting combat options, too.

In any case, I should probably keep the recommendations to PMs or myself, so I don't clutter/derail the thread.

The only mudcrab I care about in the slightest is the mudcrab merchant. Just saying.

Not many merchants have ten kilomoneys to buy stuff with.

I usually play support roles. I love sniping in BFBC2, and you'll usually find me holding a door as Support on Killing Floor.

I never ever ever play any class with stealth or pets. In a lot of games those classes tended to be the cheap ones and thus the most popular.

In video games I tend to go with the Charismatic Rogue type. Light, fast, sneaky, charming...also generally boy scouts as well. 50/50 on if I'll be using daggers or bows.

In table top games, I try to go for a really good story...and tend to gravitate towards systems that don't use classes or levels--like GURPS.

Three of my last GURPS characters:

1. Adaeze Idokuzo. Daughter of an Oxford-educated Nigerian Village elder in a post-apocalyptic setting where slavery has become a thing again. She has light telekenesis and is a skilled Architect/Civil Engineer/Builder who travels around building homes for people. She is also a skilled soldier-type who fights to free slaves with the power of her mind and her AK-47.

2. In the Transhuman Space setting (near future hard science...not dystopian or about cypernetics like cyberpunk, more interested in genetic engineering and cloning)....the conceit was that we were all private detectives. My character here was an ex-cop, single father widower, conservative anti-AI Catholic type. He was big, strong, and full of lots of combat skills...but he also tried to avoid conflict because he didn't want to get killed and leave his daughter an orphan. Also, the cases tended to all be information and non-violent. The other team members included a hacker, a geneticist, a forensic accountant, and a social charmer. So...my character's central conceit was to explore what it would mean to be a real physical type in a non-physical society.

3. The second son of a royal family who, having no inheritance, became a Gladiator. He was a fencer with a strict chivalric Code of Honor. The country he game from (Araterre in the GURPS Banestorm setting) was under the control of a larger Empire. So he fought to raise awareness of the plight of his people, to gain popularity for himself, and for his people. And also to raise money so he could buy a ship and take to a life of piracy...piracy against the Evil Megalan Empire!

I usualy play as a Warrior, I used to go for the High Armor/Low DPS type but I got bored, since my last run through Kotor (a couple years ago) I've been using warriors with highest possible DPS while still having decent armor and/or defence. Both my chars in KOTOR I & II were dual weilders, while the one from Kotor I was pure melee, the one in Kotor II was a combination of melee and force powers, as my char in kotor 1 ended up dealing little damage.
My warrior in DA:O was a dual weilder and it did some tremndous ammounts of dps, in DA2 my warrior was sword and shield, I should have picked 2H swords, nevermind. Hawke still does a lot of damage but he's not a tank, I have Aveline for that bore, he's more for dealing damage and keeping baddies at range from my mages, I ended up controlling Merrill a lot too as she was the ranged DPS and AOE spellcaster.

In Mass Effect 1 and 2 my Shepard is a Soldier-Shock Trooper, I like to go for the frontal assault, that's it. I can use my other team mates for crowd control and assistance, Shepard is an incredibly efficient killer. I priorized accuracy and thus headshot-damage over attack speed, so every shot counts, luckily his adrenaline literally stops the clock, the M-96 Mattlock is a beast too, a couple of shots and any normal guy is down.

I favor magic and stealth, but I like being the omni character. Using Oblivion as an example, I use night eye, sneak through a cave, then stab them in the back, then finish them in melee combat.
In DnD, Im currently DMing, but once the mantle passes again, I plan to try out classes I usually dont...like Paladin.

Mages and tanks are my thing. I work best either soaking up hits in the thick of it or causing widespread damage from afar.
Both require me to think very little. I don't have to put all this work into sneaking around the place and trying not to get hit.

When I get the chance to combine the two I am an unstoppable force.
Mostly because such a combination is usually completely fucking overpowered.

I usually go for the Tank's in any type of game. However I like to do supporting roles when I have competent team mates.

Minmaxed tankmage if possible (Dragon Age: Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage/Battlemage). If not, a simple mage. As I'm a human male, I prefer to make nonhuman females, to stray as far from reality as possible (hence the magic).

In fantasy games,I stick to Rogue, preferably with dodging and archery skills.
Invisibility + Dodging Enemy Attacks + A Completly Overpowered Bow = Me Winning!
