We can all appreciate a good story but the most important part of a game is the gameplay.
I highly disagree. I'd rather play a side-scroller game from the eighties with a fantastic story than a game with gameplay so balanced and well designed that it'd make a 360 or PS3 just weep that's got NO story.

Good for you! The people that prefer story over gameplay make up a very small part of the gaming world so what do I care. So far all the most popular games have either got a average story or NO story.

I guess if a game had an amazing story it would be interesting but there is no game with such a great story, all the greatest story's become movies first!

Halflife 2 for the atmosphere it exudes, and the witcher for maturity and general plot quality.

I can't take the "Final Fantasy" answers seriously. I just can't...
Spikey haired boy who looks suspiciously like a pre-pubescent girl meets suspiciously sexualised pre pubescent looking girl and shows her his gigantic sword which is twice the size of him due to possible over compensation for a certain racial stereotype.

What's not to love?
Well, we know someone hasn't played any FF games.
I played 7, 10 and the original years ago. The original wasn't bad but the others were only good because they cured my insomnia.

Planescape: Torment

The immortal and his floating skull side-kick set off to kill his own mortality and thus allow him to finally die. I don't know who came up with it, but I want to and I want to know what they were taking and I want some.

The entire Black Isle library. And most of the BioWare stuff.

My favourite of them all would be Planescape: Torment. Setting, story, and humour were almost flawless.

People will disagree with me perhaps, but I enjoyed the entire Metal Gear Solid storyline a lot.

Other than that, I really enjoyed Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears.

*Edit*
Duh, and Mass Effect.
