I'm quite a fan of the Half-Life Series. Although I will say Fallout 3 had a nice storyline to it.

Warcraft is a personal favorite. This does NOT include World of Warcraft, im talking the story and lore behind Warcraft 1 2 and 3. Loved it.

Favourite 'simple' story that's told well: COD4
Favourite 'complex' story - FFVII/MGS2. What can I say? I have a fetish for convoluted narratives :p

Half Life 2... not just the story but the wonderful way in which it is told through the physical world around you...

the downtrodden citizens of city 17 and creepy female voice that announces god knows what... the giant screens spurting out propaganda...
the ruined houses along the coast with little trajic stories to discover inside them...
the ominous citadel overlooking everything you do...
the fantastic Alyx... best AI in agame.. like EVUURRR...
the stunning interactive journey through the interior of the citadel, where you see the internal workings of the combine...
I cannot agree with you more! HL2 was and still is one of the best FPS shooters ever made! Perfect combination of hardcore action, horror and story!

I've always wanted to get my hands on some golden oldies like Planescape: Torment. A lot of older games seem to have really well-written, fleshy, compelling stories. I guess you couldn't rely on flashy graphics and a physics engine to move copies way back when, so the story and the immersion factor were always large selling points. Ico is another gem I never got around to picking up, and have yet to try to this day. Grim Fandango too.

Though I'm certainly not saying there aren't any games with great stories being released today. As many have said, Bioshock is an excellent example. Bad Company, while not entirely original, looks like a bit of a laugh. I haven't played it yet either.

While we're on this topic, I've seen a few people mentioning Legend of Dragoon lately. I don't recall it ever being that popular, and I remember when it came out that only one of my friends had heard of it. I guess people were too into Final Fantasy to pay it any attention. But LoD had quite a good little story behind it, at least I thought so at the time. I've not played it in many years though, so I guess there's a chance that nostalgia is doing it a favour.

The first time I played through it, Bioshock was incredibly powerful. It really stands out in my mind as the best example of what storytelling can be through gaming, it's so involving and emotional from your own viewpoint partly because it involves you so much in it.

I like Sanitarium's story line though, it's pretty unique and really deep.

FEAR 1 & 2
Max Payne 1 & 2
Halo Trilogy
Bioshock
Assassins Creed
Mass Effect
Gears of War 1 & 2

I really can't decide.
NOT Half Life 2. I played it today and whilst the game did raise my admitedly low respect for it, the story just was... bland. I do love the gravity gun though :3

I am re-iterating an answer from something like page 1 but it has to be Silent Hill 2 for the eerie story telling and creepy twists and turns as you search for your dead wife! Classic horror storytelling! Bad acting but.....good story telling!

to set the record straight, I played Legend of Dragoon and the story wasn't particularly memorable. Fun game, though.

Persona 2: Eternal Punishment has a pretty good story. The character development is even better than the actual storytelling. Much like Parasite Eve, the game uses elements of horror and a modern setting to create something fairly original.

I've already mentioned Half-Life 2, but I think it's the way the story develops in front of you that makes it compelling. also, that characters don't go into expository monologues: those tend to break the illusion of believability.

There isn't much of a story, but SMT: Nocturne had a really cool premise: you survive the disctruction of the world and navigate a newly-developing universe inhabited by spirits, creatures, and deities from various religions and myths. your goal is to choose a philosophy that will shape the new universe and defeat those who champion opposing philosophies. the vortex world is your oyster.

I gave up on Tales of Symphonia, but I always heard that the story really picked up later in the game. Anyone care to testify to that?

Chrono Trigger
FF6
FF7 and Crisis Core

These stories I will never get tired of playing.
