I think they qualify as lesser known bands. The only people I know who have heard of them are friends I had listen to 'em. Also I don't pay attention to music to much(what is mainstream what isn't, who's popular, new artists, etc.)
Your post reads like my napster playlist! Metal is where it is at.

Amon Amarth
Sadly, Amon Amarth appears to have left the "lesser known" category... I died a little when I saw this, but their shirts are being sold at Hot Topic now...
really? didn't realise that. i mean, i thought they were getting bigger, but not mainstream =\

OT: most music i listen to is fairly well known, although i like my guitar teachers band, INN13. i guess that kinda counts xD

I'm surprised that Cake isn't a more well known band. Their song "Short Skirt Long Jacket" was the opening song, sans vocals, in NBC's show Chuck.

I'll just leave this here..

Five Finger Death Punch. Not sure if they are "less known" enough, but they are pretty good.

And I know they were in Duke Nukem, but how many people have heard any other songs by Stabbing Westward?

Also, have to mention Sonata Arctica. That's good metal.

Finally, Amberian Dawn is freaking awesome operatic metal.

My music may not be like... uber-undeground, but in my city I'm probably the only person who's heard of any of these bands. Ahhh, Memphis.. How I love this shithole. >_>

There are a couple I like that have an album but mostly still just do local stuff, or tour pubs and the like. Bootscraper (folk punky goodness), Faintest Idea (ska) and Beat the Red Light (ska metal) come to mind.

Same here, but I think it's less because I'm a hipster and more because the radio doesn't play a lot of bluegrass or decent country. Mumford and Sons being the exception.

Hearing 200 people shout "they killed John Henry but they won't kill me" at his concert was one of the best things I've ever seen at a show.
