I liked the OST for Metro 2033, and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Something about those gloomy environments made the music better,

I'm gonna do this wanky thing and throw out props to an indie game.

Thomas Was Alone has some of the most magnificent music I've heard. I recommend getting it, I hardly think anyone could possibly be disappointed. Amazing music.
I listened to the Album on Bandcamp and seriously considered getting the game just to see the music implication. The soundtrack to that game is spectacular.

The first four Silent Hill games all have really good soundtracks. My current favorite being:

American McGee's Alice deserves a mention, Chris Vrenna did a very good job with that soundtrack!

You're welcome.

Persona 3 Portable- All the good of Persona 3's soundtrack, but with more! and some of the more is better than the Persona 3 stuff, so double victory! My only complaint is that it doesn't have the FES tracks (to my recollection), but whatever!

So Escapists, what is your favorite OST for a game? Also, feel free to recommend me some.
If you've not played/listened to tit, try Frozen Synapse. Remarkably good soundtrack, even though I usually dislike that style. It helps that the game is kick ass also

I can also name the obvious ones, but I've been ninja'd probably.

Also, Indie game Receiver (google it, it's great!) has some great music.

I loved the Chrono Trigger soundtrack. I also loved the Star Ocean 3 soundtrack, but I can't find the music from that anywhere.

If you're into metal and you haven't heard the MechWarrior 2 soundtrack, you have done yourself a serious diservice.

Besides that I've always loved the Silent Hill 2 & 3 soundtracks and I definitely think Bastion's soundtrack is one of the better downtempo/electronic ones I've heard in the last 5 years.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC had some very good ambient music hauntig and dark.

Mirror's Edge soundtrack by Solar Fields is also great but the main menu song is just fantastic and I know the music itself is from Still Alive by Lisa Miskovsky.

And special mention goes to this little song from Half-Life 2.

Oh boy, there are many:

-Halo series: Sweeping orchestra, strong choir, accented by electronics and exotic percussion. ODST shook things up with some noir-style stuff, really good.

-Deus Ex: Human Revolution: Best electronic score I've heard.

-Mass Effect: The first game is an homage to classic sci-fi, old school synths and stuff. It's very cool. The rest of the series is a little more standard, but all likable stuff. The ending music for ME3 is exceptional.

-Uncharted series: Mixes classic Hollywood techniques with ethnic flavor. The same composer that did Firefly!

-The Elder Scrolls: The absolute best straight up orchestral music in games. Honorable mention to Guild Wars (same composer, same basic style)

-Medal of Honor: The WW2 entries in the franchise have exceptional music. In the same style of John Williams' Saving Private Ryan and Michael Kamen's Band of Brothers.

-The Star Wars games have a pretty good stable of composers.

There's probably a good deal more, but that's off the top of my head.

A lot of people have mentioned Bastion so far, but I prefer the higher energy instrumental tracks. This one particularly:

Another favorite from one that was mentioned a lot, Journey.

I also love Akira Yamaoka's work on the Silent Hill series, from the disturbing

to the beautiful.

Into happier music, there's the soundtrack of my summer, Botanicula:

Which means I also have to mention the equally quirky music of the equally wonderful Machinarium.

I also fell in love with the mysterious, underwatery music from Aquaria, this one especially.

Then there's the always-atmospheric music of the Myst series, particularly Riven

and Uru.

Continuing into MMO territory, I've always loved the FFXI soundtrack. From the classical western fantasy sound of Ronfaure

to the more JRPG-sounding Windurst.

The FFXIV soundtrack had some gold on it to, my favorite being this:

Even Perfect World had some fun songs, especially this one.

And that's quite enough for one post...

Nier: I hate buying soundtracks, but I bought this one and didn't regret it.

Dragon's Dogma: a bit on the bombastic side, but also very good and not at all afraid to spice up the orchestral stuff with a bit of pop/rock

Final Fantasy IX. Best soundtrack ever. And the best game ever.
Oho you're so funny. I admit IX has a good soundtrack but the best FF?

That title goes to Final Fantasy X and it's soundtrack.

Various examples include...

HOTLINE MIAMI

It's synth pop with a 80's feel at a guess, check it out if you read this.

I really like the stuff by M.O.O.N. but it's all good. Coming from a heavy rock kinda guy.

Edit: I can't be the first to mention this :/ grim times
