I really like BlazBlue's OST. A few more of my favourites are Okami, Persona 3 and 4, Kingdom Hearts and Touhou.

While it doesn't really count, Touhou's also got a ton of awesome fan remixes.

Also, this is my thousandth post. Go me!

Deus Ex, the mass effect and halo series, and Crysis 2 are my favorites. Like several others as well; I see Bastion has already been mentioned. Even modern warfare 2 had a good soundtrack. In fact, I'm consistently surprised at how good game soundtracks generally are.

Okami is currently among my favorites, next to Tales of Symphonia.

The Sun Rises and Giving Kushinada a Ride are my absolute favorite two tracks from Okami. I also love the music that plays during the credits for Okami HD, but I can't seem to find it, or even its name, anywhere(Okami PS2 had Reset by Ayaka Hirahara playing during the credits, Okami HD plays something different).

Also, Fatalize and Fighting of the Spirit are my two favorite tracks from Tales of Symphonia.

Also, the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series and every single associated game has absolutely wonderful music.

The World Ends with You. Fits really well with the game's trendy futuristic style, and blends perfectly with the battle

Super hip. Super freakin' hip.

I will post the same song I always do in these types of threads:
Bastion has the best OST ever IMO.

The Mass Effect series also has an awesome soundtrack. Legend of Zelda the Wind Waker is another great one.

Every Sonic game ever except Sonic R. Even Sonic 2006...I guess that's one thing that game has going for it.

I can never decide which game has my favorite OST: Halo 3: ODST with it's beautiful, jazzy noir ambient music, or Portal 2 and DAT TECHNO.

I've got a bunch of different soundtracks kicking around, some of my favourites are:

Ben Prunty - Rockmen (Battle) from FTL

Mark Morgan - Smoldering Corpse Bar from Planescape: Torment

Michael McCann - 1. Icarus - Main Theme from Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Hanz Zimmer - Crysis 2 - Insertion

Adam Skorupa & Krzystof Wierzynkiewicz - The Path of a Kingslayer from The Witcher 2

Jesper Kyd - Welcome to Fyrestone from Borderlands

My favourite soundtrack of a game is hard to choose, but for an OST it has to be Deus Ex: HR.

All cool soundtracks. Pretty awesome games too :)

The Kingdom Hearts series is loaded with awesome tracks.

I'm particularly in love with : Disappeared (the KH1 version), Night of Fate, Lord of the Castle, Rage Awakened, Dismissed, A Fight to the Death, Vector to the Heavens, Enter the Void, The 13th Dilemma, The 13th Struggle, Desire for all That is Lost, Fragments of Sorrow, Deep Drive, Forze dell'Oscurita' (Forces of Darkness), Darkness of the Unknown, L'Oscurita' dell'Ignoto (remix of DotU), L'Eminenza Oscura I (The Eminence of Darkness), L'Impeto Oscuro (Dark Impetus), and Xehanort-The Early Days.

I am also loving Heaven's Divide from MGS: Peace Walker.

I second this all the way! The soundtrack is just as unorthodox as the rest of the game, and it paid off big-time. Amazing music for those into pop, electronic, hip-hop, and all the modern genres in general.

Those of you who like Jazz should look into L.A. Noire's soundtrack if you haven't already. Every single piece brought out one of my more pleasant memories of playing that game, even though I didn't like it that much in the end.

I'm also surprised that Pokemon hasn't been mentioned yet. The gameplay may get stale from time to time, but the music is never anything less than magical.

Oh man, I especially liked that one. I have yet to give SHMUPs an honest try, but damn, music like that certainly has me interested.

My favourite tracks are usually from fighting games. Here are a few of my favourites:

Daisuke Ishiwatari, the mastermind behind the Guilty Gear soundtracks. The best soundtrack out there.
Ishiwatari is damned godlike. Guilty Gear and BlazBlue sound amazing.

OSTs from games are a fetish of mine, I never have an overall favorite because it changes from time to time. My current favorite is,

The soundtrack for Halo 4 was a bit of a disappointment, it was good don't get me wrong but it wasn't the same and not as memorable. The Never Forget remix was the tune at the end over the credits, after the end it was fitting and the new artist did a good of remixing it and didn't mangle the original.

Another recent favourite is,

I would suggest that when you do come to entering the genre, you read up a little bit (ask the helpful lot at shmups forum) about them first rather then diving straight in the deep end. As the genre is very similar to Darksouls in many respects. IE a healthy minset along with reading up on the fundamental mechanics of the genre is the key to playing with any degree of skill or fun. Then when you play it's just a case of using that knowledge with observation to find opportunities and exploit them as much as you can. Once it clicks in your head and you "get it" they are as addictive as digital crack.

Then like fighters it's just a case of technical skill, choosing the right shmups / game mode for your skill level and preferences will help you enjoy them and not burning out on something too advanced. Exceed Collection, Jamesown, Refrain Prism Memories, Touhou on PC and CAVE's Deathsmiles, Dodonpachi Resurrection and Akia Katana on 360 are good noob shmups especially those Doujin PC examples. The fundementals aren't that hard to grasp its just that no one has written a decent guide compared to FTGs.

Heres some more shmup music that you might like.

Hellsinker a PC Doujin Shmup

Dodonpachi Resurrecton Black Label (360/iphone) PAL 360 version works on NA 360s

Dodonpachi Saidaioujou stage 3 (Arc / 360)

Touhou 12 (Touhou and the doujinshi surrounding the core games are full of these melodies)

Even those Manabu Namiki is mostly a shmup music producer, he works in different genres, the guy just oozes talent imo.

Love that Melty Blood Tune, for me with fighters i'm in love with Skullgirls ATM. Michiru Yamane's (she's behind Castlevania) Jazz tunes complement Skullgirls 1930s artstyle perfectly. For a budget downloadable game it puts many $60 efforts to shame imo.

I really enjoy the soundtrack from all the Assassin's Creed games. I'm going to cheat too because I just saw Cloud Atlas and the Soundtrack for that was pretty swanky.
