Evil Within 2 has the right elements of survival horror. You have the camera perspective of RE4, while having the horror elements from RE1-RE3. There is action and horror, but it does go to mostly to the action section towards the end, but does not go overboard with it. What's cool is this game has a little bit of System Shock/Dead Space in it too. The game is semi-open world, and you can explore off the beaten path for either, weapons, items, upgrades, side missions, or even hidden missions and scripted events. The cherry on top of this tall chocolate cake is that a majority of these are not marked on your map, and you have to them find them yourselves when exploring. When you're close to an area, you might pick up a sound cue, or some minor visual cues within game, but most of these you have to find yourself. It's highly recommended you do all the side quests, or most of them, as you get the best rewards. Doubly so for when you meet Sykes. Make sure to rescue him, and do both of his side quests.
Crysis is another favorite of mine. Often considered the spiritual successor to Far Cry, but the Crysis series as whole takes many elements from the FC1's spin-off, Instincts. Bad ass, scientific, supernatural, predator stalking bad ass soldiers, PMCs, or mercenaries as their prey. Then fight sci-fi schlock enemies to keep things from getting stale. The further you get into the game, the more powerful you become. This more so applies to Crysis 2 & 3 when compared to Instincts. Crysis 3 is my personal favorite of the trilogy, as it has the best elements of 1 and 2, while adding back secondary objectives, and a better upgrade system. I look forward to whatever Crytek is doing with Crysis 4/Reboot.
Of Streets of Rage's spiritual successor's, I still think The TakeOver is the best. The combat is near air-tight, art style unique and call back to pre-rendered sprite games like Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct with cool gunplay. The weakest elements are the melee weapons as the game was rushed out being developed by one guy. TO's biggest influence is Streets of Rage 3. The use of dodging by rolling up and down, and double tapping forward to run. Fight n' Rage is a great game, but it has pacing issues and checkpoints I hugely disagree with.
Final Vendetta comes out next week, but it might take my number 1 spot in this case. I am not 100% sure. I'll see how the combat works out first.
