From Guardian Heroes to Code of Princess. From Resident Evil to Evil Within. From System Shock to Bioshock, Dead Space, and Prey (2017). From Strider to.....uuuuhhhhhh....Strider's has so many spiritual successors and certain knock offs it's ridiculous. My point is that all these games have spiritual sequels/successors at some point. So what's your favorites, and where can they go next? What upcoming ones are you excited to play when they come out?

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Doesn't this just mean what game is coming out that you are looking forward too since pretty much every game could be considered a spiritual successor to some other game?

If you wish. Get creative, or talk about your one special spiritual successor you love the most.

Well, the one that comes to mind immediately is Prey (2017). It's quite a good game and I really like the twist at the end, its also totally System Shock.

The most fun I've had with a game in the past 20 years that I would love a successor to is Skyrim. I thought the game a crushing bore until I was able to mod the living heck out of it. After that I played it multiple times. I've heard of online versions but doubt it will let me mod it. For now, seems like the modding continues. Maybe just play it again.

This seems highly open-ended and subjective, but okay (confining this to IPs that I've played both of, so for instance, I can't nominate BioShock as I've never played System Shock):

THE ONES I LIKE

-Call of Duty, as the spiritual successor to Medal of Honour (sort of)

-Halo, as the spiritual successor of Marathon (I love you both!)

-Sonic the Hedgehog, as the spiritual successor of Alex Kidd (yes, this is really stretching it, but meh, it meets my criteria of playing both)

NUP!

-Assassin's Creed, as the spiritual successor to Prince of Persia (not a big fan of either, but I kind of prefer PoP...sort of...it's complicated)

-Quake, as the spiritual successor to Doom (it's debatable as to whether that's the case, but while I really like Doom, I have little love for Quake)

-Perfect Dark, as the spiritual successor of GoldenEye (I actually think GoldenEye is the better game, though I still like PD)

WHAT I'D DO WITH THEM

Don't have the time or inclination to list all of those things, you can ask for specific IP ideas if you want.

Lost Odyssey was an incredible game that nobody gave a shit about. It was the spiritual successor for turn-based Final Fantasy games since the series was become more action/real time orientated for a long time. The game was exclussive to Xbox360 (remember when they had games?) and it was utterly fantastic.

It's a shame it never caught on and they never made more games in this vien. So unfortunately.

So for upcoming ones. You know that Calypso Protocal or whatever the fuck it's called, the game that is a return of the Dead Space style horror, looks really really good and cool. So I'm looking forward to that.

Dark Souls/Bloodborne, because they’re both kinda spiritual successors of previous games. Then again even Demon’s Souls was the same thing of King’s Field.

One Step From Eden is pretty good. While it doesn't entirely scratch the itch that the Megaman Battle Network games did, you can see the love for the series in all the references the game has and the gameplay is good.

Sekiro is kind of a spiritual successor to Tenchu which was one of my fav series growing up and also my fav soulsborne game too so that's an easy one.

KIngs Field -> Demon Souls -> Dark Souls -> Bloodborne -> Dark Souls 3 -> Elden RIng.

Yes, I realize Dark Souls and Dark Souls 3 are sequels but considering DS3 is pulling a lot of Influence from BB and BB pulled elements Dark Souls it feels like it fits. Something Something Time is convoluted Something Something Find your own answers something something.

On a lesser note, Dark Souls 2 + Dark Souls 3 + Bloodborne + Sekiro -> Elden Ring. And this is the only context I will acknowledge Dark Souls 2 because Elden Ring exists and is pretty much Dark Souls 2 but remade as a much better game.

Evil Within 2 has the right elements of survival horror. You have the camera perspective of RE4, while having the horror elements from RE1-RE3. There is action and horror, but it does go to mostly to the action section towards the end, but does not go overboard with it. What's cool is this game has a little bit of System Shock/Dead Space in it too. The game is semi-open world, and you can explore off the beaten path for either, weapons, items, upgrades, side missions, or even hidden missions and scripted events. The cherry on top of this tall chocolate cake is that a majority of these are not marked on your map, and you have to them find them yourselves when exploring. When you're close to an area, you might pick up a sound cue, or some minor visual cues within game, but most of these you have to find yourself. It's highly recommended you do all the side quests, or most of them, as you get the best rewards. Doubly so for when you meet Sykes. Make sure to rescue him, and do both of his side quests.

Crysis is another favorite of mine. Often considered the spiritual successor to Far Cry, but the Crysis series as whole takes many elements from the FC1's spin-off, Instincts. Bad ass, scientific, supernatural, predator stalking bad ass soldiers, PMCs, or mercenaries as their prey. Then fight sci-fi schlock enemies to keep things from getting stale. The further you get into the game, the more powerful you become. This more so applies to Crysis 2 & 3 when compared to Instincts. Crysis 3 is my personal favorite of the trilogy, as it has the best elements of 1 and 2, while adding back secondary objectives, and a better upgrade system. I look forward to whatever Crytek is doing with Crysis 4/Reboot.

Of Streets of Rage's spiritual successor's, I still think The TakeOver is the best. The combat is near air-tight, art style unique and call back to pre-rendered sprite games like Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct with cool gunplay. The weakest elements are the melee weapons as the game was rushed out being developed by one guy. TO's biggest influence is Streets of Rage 3. The use of dodging by rolling up and down, and double tapping forward to run. Fight n' Rage is a great game, but it has pacing issues and checkpoints I hugely disagree with.

Final Vendetta comes out next week, but it might take my number 1 spot in this case. I am not 100% sure. I'll see how the combat works out first.

Not sure if you caught the post I had earlier in one of these threads mentioning how the director of Dark Souls 2 also co-directed Elden Ring. Imagine that!

Where's my spiritual successor to Deus Ex? I guess with Eidos Montreal free from the yoke of Squeenix, they might actually make an actual Deus Ex in 5 years.

I think the most recent direct on the nose spiritual successor I played was Bloodstained. "Spiritual" Successor to Castlevania. Though I think most people consider it a direct successor more than anything. Not like Konami's doing fuck. Also can't have a successor if the original is actually live and kicking.

I haven't actually played too many Castlevania's before this. I had finished Aria/Dawn of Sorrow. I kinda played a bit through Order of Ecclesia but never finished it. I tried some indie Metroidvanias but they never really stuck. I guess the closest -vania games I played beforehand were the Megaman Zero games, though they weren't really true -vania games but had elements of them where it allowed you to revisit levels. And it was all weirdly well put together as an interconnected open world of sorts, like a Castlevania map. But to access a new boss and area, you still had to select it from a menu and you could potentially go the whole game without realizing there was such a well put together map. But I digress.

I enjoyed Bloodstained and have played more Metroidvania games since. Bloodstained is kinda at a comfortable difficulty level for me. If you're struggling, you can kinda just fuck off and grind, discover more nonsense and powers and eventually find a combination of things where you steamroll the boss. Which is something I enjoy doing. Something like Hollow Knight is a lot more difficult and I stopped playing because of my struggles. Now, I don't hate Hollow Knight, I do think it is very well put together but it's just not my thing. It's definitely more of a 'master the game' than 'break the game' sort of experience, and there's a lot less ways to improve your character's innate strength through exploration and grind than something like Bloodstained. In a lot of ways I do think Hollow Knight is a much more polished experience while Bloodstained is a lot messier, but sometimes I just like having a pile of unbalanced crap lying around for me to discover and abuse. If I was younger, I might have enjoyed HK more but I think I'm past the age(and probably never had that much patience for to begin with) to play games where I have to retry bosses 10+ times to actually beat them. I also beat Ender Lilies, which I also found tested my patience every now and then but isn't quite as harsh as HK. And I also don't have to pogo stick off obnoxious spike mazes to get my powerups. No death penalty also helps.

I should probably finish Guacamelee one day....

I did know that and honestly, the more I think about it, the more I see the similarities. Especially since both begin with the PC crossing a wierd threshold(a creepy whirlpool, a wall of fog) and end with the PC taking the throne(in most of the endings for ER anyway and one of the two endings of DS2).

Bulletstorm is the FPS sequel to Wild 9 we never got, plus Duke Nukem and Mad World. The latter already did get a spiritual sequel after called Anarchy Regins. AR has better combat and character tool kits, but the campaign is mediocre. A glorified 6 hour tutorial you have to play twice to get the true ending, and unlock all the characters. Environmental design is somewhat entertaining, but generic too.

The kids ruined that game for me and I could never get very far because of them. It's like they went out of their way to make the kids as annoying as you could, plus they keep using them to deus ex the story along. I also found that the premise was wasted, you play as immortal character, yet you don't play across long span of time, all you get are these light novel sequence, about the character long lives, that are 1000x more interesting than the actual game story and always made me ask why we weren't playing those instead of the generic "bad guy bad" plot. It did have a kick ass opening.

imo, last remant is far more interesting game out of the 4 JRPG MS made for the X360, although it is a pretty crappy game overall, its full of cool idea. (never got far in infinite undiscovery, what a terrible name, and blue dragon was just average).

SE did return to turn base with the bravely default franchise which issssssss okay... I like the gameplay but tend to find the story insufferable, plus they always cram shitty mobile crossplay stuff.

It's already out, but I haven't played it yet, there's a game called symphony of war (such a generic name) that's actually a cross between fire emblem and old school ogre battle. The ogre battle system is pretty fun where you make team out of multiple character and then use those team as single unit in tactical combat, giving you lots of option to build your army. It also make me wish for another game following the bahamut lagoon blueprint.

Yeah, that did not happen. Definitely not even in my top 10 of brawlers.
