Mine is armored core 4 the one the reason I own a 360, Anyone got a personal favorite for making there hands hurt! This about a certain game type aimed at a certain type of gamer, basically a niche game sort but not restricted by genre. This does not mean hardcore violence content or hardcore fan base merely a description of gameplay, sorry for this but been some confusion over what we are talking about!

Maplestory!
Ok, I'm done joking. I would say Guitar Hero, although I don't play it very often.

If by hardcore, you mean difficult, then I'll say Overlord: Raising Hell on Legendary mode.
I just bought it and had quite a rough time with those blasted halflings.
However, now it's becoming easier (just got all the minion hives). Maybe it's just the beginning that was so tough?

Wipeout/2097/Wip3out

or Quake/2/Arena

Back in the days before pussy health, checkpoints and rubber band AI. I love those games.

Again, i guess it really depends on your definition of "ultra hardcore". For me, i'd probrably say it's Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga parts 1 and 2. Those games are the very definition of a goddamned dungeon crawler, but you can't put em down because the story is so damned batshit you can't wait to see what happens next. Simply put, i loved it, easily surpasses anything square has put out since FF9.

STALKER Shadow of chernobyl, for the same reasons that are mentioned time and time again.
That game kills you for simply walking and not paying attention.

Battletoads on the SNES.

I want to know how many actually finished that game.

And Super Ghouls and Ghosts gets an honorable mention.

I tend to define ultra hardcore games by even on the easiest game setting a casual gamer couldn't really complete missions maybe like perfect dark would be a easy ultra hardcore game (not the 360 version).

I don't know if it's "ultra hardcore" or even "hardcore", but F-Zero GX is one of my favourite games ever. Sure, the story mode was frustrating sometimes, but I loved it nevertheless.

Huh, no, don't know any games like that.
What's the point of having difficulty settings if even the easiest one is too tough?

Basically games used to be alot harder and needing alot more manual dexterity and hand eye ability its basically a modern blast from the past which challenges people who grew up on golden eye secret agent difficult and find alot modern games so easy.

So being a "hardcore" gamer is about playing games loaded with a metric fuckton of frustration?

No, thanks.
No its about a different sort of game which needs a certain set skills to be able to play. Not bad games which just hard because the dont work very well.

True, but that's no reason to make the easiest difficulty too tough.
It's a reason to add another, harder difficulty setting.

I don't see the sense in making games impossible for casual gamers if we can just make them enjoyable for everybody, both people who just want to have fun with the game and people who want to have a challenge.

We aren't back in the arcade days, when it was about having people fail a lot so they'd put in more money.

Oh I agree but I think that most of these games on this list wont be very modern games because its dying breed because don't include other gamers for better or worse.
