Uh...the M1 is a semi-automatic weapon. Maybe you're thinking of the springfield M1903?

I pick the 1911, still one of the best handgun designs ever.

That or the semi-automatic L39 Anti-Tank rifle, the first "Elephant gun". Fired a 20mm projectile and was used to lay waste to soviet armor, bunkers, and low flying aircraft by the Fins. Weighed over a hundred pounds.

Yeah, the M1 was my grandfather's from the war. He taught me how to shoot on that weapon and when he passed bequeathed it to me along with his officer's Colt .45. And the Mosin I got at a gunshow in Texas for about $150.

I don't have much first hand experience of any weapons from WW2, and by that I mean, no experience at all.

All I know is from video games the guns were featured in, and reading the technical qualities of them.

That being said, seems the Germans had by far the best weapons.

MP 40, 44 (AK 47 precursor), various Machine Guns, etc.

General George S. Patton called the M1 Garand the greatest battle rifle ever developed. I think it's a damn good one. It was the basis of what is still being used as a sniper rifles: the M-21, M-24, and M-40. It's a great shooter.

A lot of people are saying the Mosin-Nagant, which is a fine shooter, but the 90 degree angle bolt is just weird as hell

My grandfather had a 55 Boyz rifle, but he got rid of it before he died which made me a sad panda.

Not sure of the proper name, but Hitler's buzzsaw would have to be my favorite as well. Not for the amount of people it killed but for the ingenuity behind the design.

See the problem with machine guns is that you can not fire one indefinitely because the barrel heats and eventually becomes unusable. Different machine gun designs handle this problem in different way some use multiply barrel that rotate some barrel 1 has time to cool off while barrel 2-6 or whatever shoot a bullet. Others used water. Hitler's Buzzsaw as it was called use a removable barrel at could be replaced with a new one in a matter of second.

This gun became so infamous that GI were trained to only advance during the 15-30 second it took to change the barrel. When fired the gun made a distinctive sound (like a buzzsaw) once the sound stopped GI knew that had a few seconds to safely haul ass to their next bit of cover.

Eh, everyone has taken all my favourites, so instead of reposting what everyone else have said, I'm gonna go with the M1A1 Carbine.

Folding stock, 15 bullets per clip, semi-automatic. The perfect lightweight rifle.
