As the title indicates, what are the escapist's favourite band's and artists that they love listening to? If you want to go further you could also say what your favourite genre is as well. I'll start.

In no particular order:

Animal Collective
Aphex Twin
LCD Soundsystem
Dan Barrett
Swans

Notable mentions being Bjork, The Flaming Lips and The White Stripes. However my favourite genre would be Electronica.

Mine would be:

Alesana
Thirty Seconds to Mars
Of Mice & Men
Motionless in White
Coheed & Cambria
Amon Amarth

Some notable contenders being A Day to Remember, Hands Like Houses, Sleeping With Sirens, and A Skylit Drive. I'm not delving into sub-genres so my favorite genre is metal.

In no particular order:

Edguy and Avantasia (both headed by Tobias Sammet)
Amon Amarth
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Theocracy
Morphia
Nightwish

Yeah, those are the ones that come to my mind the quickest and tend to be the ones that make me most excited when I hear them come around on the radio. Part of me wants to put more melodic death metal bands, but it is just so hard to find a good one. Most of them tend to fluctuate between excellent and horrible songs, generally at a higher horrible:excellent ratio than most bands I enjoy. That's not to say I don't like the genre (I love it), but that's just an issue I see too often in too many of its bands. Even Amon Amarth has that issue on a couple of its albums, but I still play them more than most bands.

I can easily name my top two but beyond that it gets a little trickier, as most other bands I tend to like a handful of songs and my tastes vary.

Top two are (with an example of a song from each):

I'm not sure if I'd call them my "favorites," as I tend to get attached to specific songs rather than specific artists, but there are a few bands and artists I follow more closely than others.

Nightwish
Ludovico Einaudi
The Twelve Girls Band
The Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Michael Buble
Celtic Woman
Loreena McKennitt
Enter the Haggis
Achillea
Delirium

And recently I've gotten into Adele and a bit of Beyonce.

In no particular order...

He Is Legend
Mastodon
Slipknot
Stone Sour
Streetlight Manifesto
The Bronx
Nine Inch Nails
Turbowolf
Every Time I Die
Parkway Drive
Ratatat
The Black Keys
Down
The Dillinger Escape Plan

As much as I listen to different genres, heavy stuff is just better. It just is. I noticed that the oldest artist in that list is NIN... For some reason that I'm not entirely sure of I don't tend to listen to 'classic' music that much, it irks me a lot when people bemoan the downfall of decent music; it's all nostalgic bollocks that demeans the brilliant music that's being made today.

In no particular order and obviously subject to change,

Kayo Dot
Maudlin Of The Well
Blind Guardian
Secret Chiefs 3
Estradasphere
The Offspring
The Protomen
Iron Maiden
Yasunori Mitsuda

as for genres, well, I think experimental and progressive of the heavier variant would be my favourite these days but I listen to pretty much everything genrewise so....

Ozzy Osbourne (when he left Sabbath)
Sabaton
Queen
AC/DC
Guns N Roses
Rammstein

...would be a few of my favourites.

I wouldn't say they make the best music/songs in the world. But i´ve grown up listening to The Offspring and Bloodhound Gang, and I will continue to do so forever. Their songs are pretty much permanently stuck in my head.

Then of course we have the classics.

Guns N Roses
AC/DC
Queen
Creedence clearwater

Prince
Peter Gabriel
Talking Heads
Robert Palmer
Warren Zevon
Jane's Addiction

I wish I had a time machine so I could travel back to the 80-90s when all of them were popular.

It's tough deciding what my favorite genre is, they all have their virtues. But! here are some of my favorite artists in no particular order:

Lydia
Modest Mouse
The Contortionist
Manchester Orchestra
Old Crow Medicine Show
Baths
Fleet Foxes
Frank Ocean
MF Doom
Mastodon

I guess that's a pretty good sampling of stuff I like. It works out pretty well because I can talk about music with most people and somehow relate.

Why are these topics always full of posts that list a bunch of bands that are rock, pop/rock, and maybe some blues/rock and "hard rock" if you're really daring, that then go on to say "I listen to everything!"? Look, I'm going to list a few metal bands and a rock band and I'm not going to pretend that's every genre ever, it's not hard, my friends :)

Primordial
Rush
Gorguts
Destroyer 666

Let me see here...

Paul Simon & Simon & Garfunkel
David Bowie
R.E.M.
Arcade Fire
Leonard Cohen
Gorillaz
The National
Johnny Cash
Alannis Morisette
Red Hot Chili Peppers

There's no order to 'em, other than Paul Simon being unmoved from the top spot now for as long as I can remember.
