There are only two modern classical composers worth listening to: Eric Whitacre and Arvo Pärt.

As far as background music goes, John Williams and Jeremy Soule take the top spots. I love Yoko Kanno, but I wouldn't say the compositions per se are great; they just match the setting very well.
