Jeremy Soule, if the title screen to Oblivion fails to get you pumped, then there is something wrong with you. He also did a ton of other great stuff. He also did Morrowind, Prey, Company of Heroes, a few Warhammer games, the Harry Potter games, Guild Wars, and Secret of Evermore.

I have to admit my knowledge of classical music is appauling, but I like Tchaikovsky because of Clara Rockmore's amazing reworking of some of his pieces for the theremin, this to me is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEl4zCQBv2c

Other than that I like what I've heard of Phillip Glass and Steve Reich, I find the Hungarian suicide song (can't remember the composer or the pieces acctual name) brilliant, especialy in instrumental form.

Ludwig van Beethoven (piano sonatas and string quartets especially)
Frederic Chopin (love all his work, but his nocturnes are probably the best)
Franz Schubert (the symphonies)
Sergei Rachmaninoff (the piano concertos)
Johannes Brahms (string quartets)

Stravinsky. While often overlooked, his ballet Petrushka is just amazing in terms of its tonality (or lack of) and rhythms.

This- I loved his music in Neverwinter Nights. Just so moving.. Actually made me sad on a few occasions.

Beethoven's 9th and 5th symphonies are some of the best and most recognisable pieces of music ever and I love them.

But I also love Mozart as I believe no composer is quite as good as him at evoking such deep and specific emotions with his music. In particular I love his Requiem. Just makes you want to cry.

I'm also a fan of Bach's cello work in particular.

I haven't listened to many classical composers outside the big few but hell I could go on for a good while about the stuff I do listen to.

for the modern ones i'm going to say Cliff Mansell

also on a side note with Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer, both of them have done The Simpsons
Clint Mansell, actually, but you're right. His score for Requiem for A Dream is amazing and the main title theme to Abandon is one of the creepiest things I've ever heard. Aside from him I like Williams and Zimmer.

Let's see. I'd have to go with a list of composers, which would include Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson Williams, and whoever composed Requiem for a Dream.

I don't think I've seen Michael Giacchino mentioned yet, which is a shame. He started out composing for video games, but has since moved to film (I think he's scoring the new Star Trek movie) but his compositions for Medal of Honor and Call of Duty are still awesome.

Jeremy Soule counts?

If not, the dude that composed Diablo 2 music.
Yeah, this this!

Jeremy Soule is awesome, if only for the TA soundtrack alone.

And if he doesn't count, I've always had a fondness for Vivaldi.
