The shrike is a creature from Hyperion, by Dan Simmons.

It is a three meter tall bladed killing machine. It weighs 1 ton and can bend time and space.

Actually, there are too many cool ones to count- dragons, sirens and mermaids, vampires (not the sparkly kind), Cthulu, phoenixes, chimeras, griffins, fairies, etc. etc. etc.
