Does Digimon count? Sailormoon was my first, followed by Cardcaptors. Love all three :)
Ashamed to admit it, but ya, Sailormoon may have been my first. I don't think I fully knew what I was watching. But first Subbed anime would be... Bleach I think. To be followed by many more.

Sailor Moon got me started on anime way back when it first aired on USA network. However, I haven't made it all the way through the entire series because of the sheer length. It would take me a couple of weeks of marathon watching to actually take the whole series in at once. It's amazing to me the difference between the American and Japanese releases of the show from what I have managed to get through though.

Sailor Moon is still among my favorites, along with Princess 9, Super GALS!, Dirty Pair Flash, and Fist of the North Star (another OMG long series).

For a series I suppose Legend of the Overfiend...series of movies anyway...
Hard.Fucking.Core.
I didn't even hear about Urotsukidoji until I was into my 20s, and I'd sooner watch 2 girls 1 cup again than try to finish it.
Yeah at the time I had the impression that all anime was super hardcore like that. It shook my fragile mind lol.

My first were Gundam Wing and DBZ on Toonami when I was a kid, though I only understood DBZ, really. It was only upon re-watching Gundam Wing when it aired on Adult Swim a few years later that I really appreciated the storyline rather than just watching a bunch of robots fight each other.

Do films count? If so then the first anime I fully watched and understood as you said would be Steamboy.

I don't really watch much anime, though a friend of mine has steered me towards the shows Code Geass and High school of the dead, are they any good?

Speed Racer I guess, but I don't think that qualifies under the modern conception of anime.

Vampire Hunter D, the origional 1980's one, had just come out in the USA. That was the only one I had seen for about 3 years, then I saw the Bubblegum Crisis series (again, the origional OAVs). By highschool I was watching more and more.

On second thought...if this counts: Voltron. Yeah, that was the first, never thought of it as ANIME as a kid...that term wouldnt come into popular wester use until the 80's

probably Naruto, but for some reason that just doesn't fell like the first anime to draw me in.. that would probably be Full Metal Alchimist

Digimon I guess. But that was before I knew it was Anime. The first Anime I've watched knowing it was anime was a show called Rozen Maiden. (desu)
