Well, people call Zelda an RPG, and the earliest game I can remember playing is The Legend of Zelda for the NES.

The original Dragon Warrior. Sure it was boring as hell, but there wasn't anything like it before on the NES so I somehow got hooked all the same (plus my patience was infinitely more vast then). I went out and got me a copy of FF1 after that which was ever so much better and I haven't looked back since.
the first rpg i watched being played was ff7. the first one i actually played was final fantasy 8, but my first rpg i ever owned was final fantasy 9 right after it came out. my mum got it for me on christmas and i was so happy, only 1 problem...she didn't buy the memory card. T-T
If Pokemon counts (I've been seeing it throughout this thread) then red, if not then Final Fantasy 8 though I still like 9 more...
My first RPG was Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (don't boo me. My very next two games were Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, both of which I have on cartridge). I was a rather curious 13 year old with the internet and the newfound freedom of ROMs (not that piracy is good or should be endorsed, but in this particular instance my delinquency started me on the slippery slope of RPG fandom ever after dropping countless dollars and hours at its shining altar). Being raised by a very traditional and religious grandmother, anything with magic was considered demonic. So I had to see what the hype was about. And it was delicious.
