Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the only game I've played so far this year that actually came out this year. Loving it so far though

Well, I've only played Halo Wars 2 and Mass Effect Andromeda, so hopefully neither.

Horizon ZD so far. The story was decent enough, even though it was a bit weird seeing some of the characters acting like my best friends while some random prick hated my guts even though i barely had one conversation with all of them. The combat was where the game really shined for me, it just works so damn well that i kept getting sidetracked whenever i saw some tough machine that i could fight and i didn't get tired of it until the very end. The fact that the game looks stunning and has a pretty interesting map to explore also helped.

I forgot about Halo Wars 2, it was pretty good but it felt more like a teaser for Halo 6.

Teaser as in by being a Halo game, or teaser in terms of plot?

If the latter, please say so, but don't spoil it please. ;)

I've always been of the opinion that choosing a GOTY this early in the year is premature to be honest. But considering that games coming out at this time of year are often forgotten by the end of the year I do see some merit in celebrating them now.

On topic I'mma go with Horizon Zero Dawn. I don't want to over-hype it or anything but I enjoyed it more than any game I can remember buying for years. Plus the story affected me quite powerfully in ways that I have only been privileged enough to experience a small number of times. It is a game that I have to try really hard to find nitpicks with so that all I have to say isn't just gushing praise.

That said I honestly believe it is one of the best video games ever made, certainly within the sandbox genre. While basically all of its gameplay elements have been taken from some other game, Horizon has taken all these elements and blended them together and executed them perfectly. Tomb Raider for instance feels like a joke gameplay wise in comparison. Additionally the story is very original, certainly a first for me, and I became very emotionally invested in it. It's definitely the best post-apocalyptic tale I've ever encountered.

Would strongly recommend Horizon to anyone who doesn't hate sandbox games, and anyone who likes a blend of well written, engaging stories with the freedom of being able to go do your own thing for hours on end. If you can't enjoy the gameplay elements then I dunno how much you'll like Horizon since you kinda need to spend a lot of time playing the game without direct narrative direction/involvement. If anything I would have liked it to have more story based quests, though the ones that are there are all excellent.

Persona 5?

It's basically a 'everything you love about the SMT/Persona series...but in HD'.

So...yeah.

The best game I played so far this year is Watch Dogs 2. Good game but not GOTY.
As to 2017 games I'm Still playing through Wildlands but I don't think it'll compete. Got Mass Effect to go, I don't think that'll make it either.

We've already had a full year's worth of games. All the 2017 games are out already.

Wait! There's more?

Slow down! I can't find enough hours!

Horizon: Zero Dawn and Blaster Master Zero are probably the only new games I've played this year. It would be nice if Etrian Odyssey 5 would come to America though.

Lol I will admit this year has been front loaded with a bunch of awesome games. Finding the time can be pretty hard.

Breath of the Wild for sure. It's been a long time since I've been so engrossed in a game, as well as challenged.

twenty hours into P5, and if the rest of the game keeps up, it'll be insanely tough to beat. Presentation, soundtrack, difficulty, gameplay, social sim elements, all solid and engrossing. My one biggest complaint is that the game tends to railroad you in the evenings, finding any excuse it can muster to prevent you going out and doing stuff and ITS NOT MY FAULT MY PLANT IS WILTING AND MY DVD IS FOUR DAYS LATE TO BE RETURNED THE GAME WON'T LET ME DO ANYTHING!

*ahem* anyway, even that one drawback is drowned out by everything the game does right, so yeah, it's currently top contender.

It's pretty much a set-up for Halo 6. It ties together with the ending of Halo 5 and gives you an idea on what to expect for Halo 6, I won't spoil unless you're not planning on buying HW2.

Nier: Automata

Currently in the middle of the 3rd playthrough, and boy has stuff started happening. Can you believe some people only played through ending [A] and stopped there?

Anyways, the year is still pretty early so it could become Persona 5, but ever since that atlus announcement about streaming, I'm wondering how much it'll hinge on that spoiler. If it really hinged on it, it'll lose points there, but probably not too much, since the game is oozing with style.

So far It looks like persona 5 and Horizon: zero dawn are the most popular titles on the escapist right now. Never played a persona game so maybe I'll check it out at some point. Horizon I feel looks like just another open world bow em up gta clone. Nier seems to be a game that the dark souls difficulty lovers won't really like.

Personally if I didn't have a ps4 I would count games obtained this year anyway. So if you obtained a game that's new to you this year by all means include it.

Horizon: Zero Dawn is Game of the year for me, by far. That game has easily been the best experience I've had in quite a while and stands up there next to the likes of my all-time favorite games.

The more I played the more I liked the game, rating it an 8.5/10 and as AngryJoe would say, it get an easy badass seal of approval. It's certainly got some faults, but for a brand new IP, I don't think they could have made a more polished and more fun experience. The world is great and I look forward to seeing what comes in the story DLC and any future sequels.

Didn't you say you liked Nier: Automata more in another thread? Or did you go back to Horizon and end up liking it more?

In my Nier first impressions thread, I actually wasn't impressed with the game at all. So much so that I haven't even bothered to go back and play it further. I know I should, because everyone says it is super good. But everytime i look at it, I just go "meh". I have too many games on my plate at the moment to go back to get through Nier right now.

PERSONA!
