Since 2018 is pretty much over(thank god), pretty much all the GOTY/Top 10 lists are out by this point and a new year is quickly approaching, I'm gonna go ahead and ask: What games are you planning on playing this coming year?

They don't have to be games being released in 2019. Backlogged games or games you just haven't gotten around to picking up yet are also fair game.

For me, the list goes something like this:

-Horizon Zero Dawn

I got it for Christmas 2017, haven't played it yet.

-Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

Because Ancient Fucking Greece, not to mention I rather liked Origins so why not?

-Mutant Year Zero.

Sure, it's furry XCOM, but I liked XCOM, furries don't bug me and the game is getting good reviews.
'
-Gris

It's apparently really atmospheric and such. Also, it's 4 hours long, which is really nice in an era where every game has to be a 60+ hour open world game because reasons.

-Outer Worlds

Assuming it's good, of course. I liked FO:NV and Alpha Protocol so there's a decent chance.

-Kentucky Route Zero Act V.

Yeah, I'm being super optimistic here and assuming just because it was scheduled for a "Early 2018" release it might actually drop in 2019. 4/5 acts are done and I kinda want to see the whole thing completed.

-God of War.

It's apparently really good and I've been avoiding Spoilers(other then Kratos kills a bunch of dudes, some of whom are Gods).

-Red Dead Redemption.

I'm not playing 2 until I play the first one, for numerous reasons. I know the newer game is a prequel but apparently a fair number of RDR characters are shown in RDR2 at an earlier point in their lives(including John Marston).

Edited:

-Either Pillers of Eternity or Divinity:Original Sin. Both are apparently good but different from each other. Both have an apparently even better sequel as well.

And I'm sure a couple games will take me totally off guard and I'll have to grab those as well, because it happens every year(Return of the Obra What? What is this thing? Wait, it's actually good?).

The Yakuza series.

I've played a good 6 to 7 hours of Yakuza 0, and have picked up Yakuza Kiwami, Yakuza Kiwami 2, and Yakuza 6 on the strength of just 2 of those hours.. and yet I'm finding it really hard to keep at it. For as much as I love the melodramatic crime drama wackiness, the bonkers badass characters, the crunchy beat-em up action, and the legitimately surprising and intriguing plot, the game feels like a real chore at the same time.

Well, I've got a sort of plan, in as much that I've got Xbox Game Pass until Jan 16, and Xbox Live until March 13 (which I got for $1 and $12 respectively). So, right now I'm playing Wolfenstein: The New Order (meh), and after that, play some Xbox One games until around March 13.

As to what those games will be past Wolfenstein, I don't know, but...it's still a plan. 0_0

1. Hollow Knight - I own it and started it, but I'm at the very beginning and already scraping against all the walls trying to figure out where to go.

2. Guacamelee 2 - Just started it with a friend, just need to find the time to play it.

3. Resident Evil Revelations 2 - Same as above, started it with a friend, just need to find time when we're both free.

4. Wolfenstein the New Colossus - I'm most of the way through the game, but I got bored and stopped when I hit Venus. That was like 8 months ago. I really need to go back and finish it, but the pacing of the game just isn't very good. It lacks the sense of progression that the previous game had. It doesn't feel like I'm accomplishing anything in the world.

5. Red Dead Redemption 2 - I'm finding the gameplay to be kind of a slog, but I really enjoy the world, characters, and story so I'm still playing. It just feels like they took all the gameplay ideas from Red Dead 1 and added more annoying mechanics to them without fixing any of the gameplay flaws. The gameplay is the same...but worse, but the world is better and more detailed.

6. Yakuza Kiwami - I have it on my PS4, but I probably won't start it until I finish RDR2. I can't play 2 games of this length at the same time.

What will actually probably happen - I sit down and play Dark Souls for the 15th time.

Games that are already out & I intend to play or finish in 2019:

* Dead Space 3 (got it & already completed it solo a while ago, but currently playing through co-op);
* Dark Souls 3 (got it in the library);
* Monster Hunter: World (got it in the library);
* Octopath Traveler (not in the library, but currently on sale).

...and a bunch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which I got for Xmas.

Games that I plan to play when they come out in 2019:

* Resident Evil 2 Remake
* Nioh 2
* The upcoming full Pokemon RPG on the Switch
* Yoshi's Crafted World
* Metroid Prime 4
* Fire Emblem: Three Houses
* Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

2019 looks like a better year than 2018 (though not quite as great as 2017). Looks particularly strong for the Switch from my perspective.

Star Wars: The Old Republic.

Honestly, I feel like this game is on its last legs. It's been going on for a while and seems to just be wallowing in low player numbers. I've heard some great things about some of the story paths, especially the Imperial Agent, so I've decided I need to put on my big boy pants and do them before the game shuts down. Especially as a Star Wars fan. I'm currently doing the Sith Warrior, which I've done before and enjoyed immensely. Such a stereotypical amazing Sith Star Wars tale. After that I'll do the Smuggler and who know's what after.

Dark Messiah: Of Might and Magic.

I've actually already finished one playthrough of this game, just need to do my second, evil one. This is one hell of a game with the most sexist, generic fantasy writing I've ever encountered. I love every gods damn second of it. But the gameplay is the best. I never thought kicking would be the most amazing attack in a game.

I'll compile a small list here. I love MandaloreGaming and Funhaus So a lot of stuff they play ends up on my lists. I plan to knock some of these out during the new year. Also some other stuff I've been meaning to.

-Arx Fatalis
-Gothic Series and ArcaniA
-Deus Ex (Hopefully the whole series, including Project Snowblind
-Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
-Rage

Games coming out this year I'm looking forward to include

-Ghost of Tsushima
-Days Gone
-The Outer Worlds
-Rage 2

Hopefully this year I will be able to get a PC and PS4 to play the games from 2017-2018.

Playing the first game now, to be honest, I've got that same feeling. Up to the moon and I don't really have any sense of progression from a narrative standpoint.

If I was being generous I could attribute this as being intentional - that the Nazis have won, and that whatever the Kriseau or B.J. do, it's hopeless. Still, I doubt that's the case, just that the game is poorly plotted (even if its worldbuilding is actually quite well done).

In an ideal world I?d like to play through the following this year:

-Horizon: Zero Dawn DLC: Frozen Wilds (will possibly start tonight. Loved the main game with its mechanics feeling butter smooth and looking/sounding drop dead gorgeous, and have heard good things of the extra content.)

-Red Dead Redemption 2 (started but only at the end of chapter 2. Love the attention to detail, and how much there is to explore. Probably have around 20 hours in and haven?t even thought of the main storyline much, which says a lot about how the game?s world itself has drawn me in.)

-Dark Souls 3 (started but only at the High Wall area. Loving the weapon arts. The modifier feels so smooth and analogous on the trigger button, especially with stance changes. I?ve been spoiled with Bloodborne?s unique weapon selection and move sets, so am hoping this makes up for the more...standard Souls variety of arms.)

-The Witcher 3 (started) and have done a decent amount of side questing but am only near the end of the Bloody Baron as far as main quests. At least I think so, as he?s helping fulfill his end of the deal we made. So far it?s an interesting narrative and most of the quests feel worthwhile with limited fetchiness.)

-Kingdom Come: Deliverance (started, but only a few quests in. Mostly doing side stuff and exploring to get better gear. I really like how immersive it is, and how nuanced and detailed the combat can be. Even the highly involved potion crafting system is a process that requires both knowledge and skill. Finding treasures is pretty thrilling because it usually means better equipment or enough gold to buy some. The side quests also feel pretty organic, but one I?m on now involving picking flowers for a recipe put me off a bit.)

-Mad Max (Started and should be close to Gas Town soon. Excellent implementation of car and melee combat coupled with Havok physics yields some hard hitting fun. Does get repetitive but it?s detailed enough for me to stay interested.)

-Mafia 3 (Started but am only a few missions in. Great storyline but that about all that would keep me playing. The general gameplay is decent; especially the gunplay and melee options, but you can tell they had trouble in development. I?m actually glad the AI is easy to cheese because I probably wouldn?t have the patience for a play through otherwise.)

In the first game you do very much get a sense of progression, it's just that your influence on the world stage is pretty minimal compared to the Nazi war machine. Still, every mission you actually get something done from the moment you wake up in the hospital.

You free the other resistance members and get to their base, you get the helicopter jet things, you sabotage the moon base, you hijack the submarine. Every level you're getting something done.

In the second game you have all the assets that you got in the first game, but you're spinning your wheels. You don't get anything new for your team, you're basically at status quo and surviving being hunted down. In the first game you feel like you're fighting back, no matter how minimally, and in the second game you just feel like you're running and hiding.

I'm wary of commenting too much, since I haven't beaten the game yet, but "getting something done" isn't exactly the same as getting a sense of progression.

Like, by the year 1960, we know the following about the state of the world:

-The Nazis control Europe directly - by extension, the countries of the British Empire/Commonwealth have been forced to lay down their arms. Oh, and concentration camps are still a thing, and as awful as you can imagine.

-The Nazis have forced the United States to surrender (I think it's confirmed that they have a presence there as well? Certainly it's the case by the second game).

-The Nazis operate in South America, to the point where they have free will to carry out purges against the native peoples (which is as horrible as you'd imagine)

-The Nazis exert indirect control over China (defeated) and Japan (betrayed just like Italy) - there's apparently plans for Nazi towns to be built over the ruins of Beijing.

-The Nazis control North Africa, and are pushing south.

-They've got a moonbase.

So, having since reached said moonbase, B.J. has so far accomplished:

-One prison break

-The destruction of the London Nautica

-The liberation of a concentration camp

-The scuttling of a u-boat

-The destruction of the bridge that connects Europe to North Africa

And...that's it. Maybe it'll change by the end of the game, but of everything I just listed, that's all pretty academic in the context of the setting. Maybe the bridge destruction, as that would greatly hinder the Nazis' ability to reinforce the African Front, but that's about it, but that's not even mentioned, nor is it even the purpose of the attack (said purpose being to get the ID papers to get B.J. to the moon...apparently the Nazis didn't think to check up on the fact that the guy was just in a resistance attack. But even then, given the nature of the world that TNO presents us, it's hard to get a sense of accomplishment when I'm carrying out actions that I know are academic in the setting's overall context.

I'm most of the way through Luigi's Mansion 2 right now, so my first plan is to play that. Following that, play through Pokemon Ultra Moon. After that, I'm not so sure. Might give Fire Emblem: Awakening another shot, never got very far in that before being distracted by other games.
And of course, Luigi's Mansion 3 when it releases. Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4 on the Switch, if we get them this year.

Aside from that my plans are fairly nebulous. Maybe this will be the year I get around to the Witcher franchise. Maybe I'll play Okami on PC, maybe Hollow Knight my friend keeps telling me to play.

Knowing me, there's another Skyrim and Fallout 4 playthrough hidden somewhere in this year, I can never stay away too long.

It's real good. It's in fact so good it kinda makes the main game look worse by comparison.

I want to re-try West of Loathing. For some reason I couldn't get into it, but I'm sure its good if I give it a try.

Stanley Parable for PS4 for sure.

Mechwarrior 5 when it comes out.

Is the new Doom this year? Probably that. Same with Far Cry 5.5

Not sure if anything really of note is coming out outside of that...

Iconoclasts, Steamworld Dig 2 and Yooka Laylee with a dashing of A Hat in Time and Spyro Reigscorched because I am an aging adult and I'm trying my damnedest to forget about it.

Oh, it's spelt "Iconocl∆sts" on the computer screen. If that's important. Pronounced "Iconocl-triangle-sts" one would have to assume.

Very avant-garde.

Or ∆v∆nt g∆rde.

Teehee.

(Bah! None of these triangles are showing. They're supposed to be triangles, not question marks, by the way)

...

*Sigh*

(Oh, now they are showing!)

Maybe will try to see The Witness through, but I'm not sure I can commit to doing puzzles for the sake of doing puzzles with no other motivation as the firm slap on the buttocks desperately required for such games. Also I got lost pretty early and seem to be only able to find non-working puzzles now. Damn. Such a failure. Sorry, mum.

AC Odyssey and Far Cry 5 are on the future list somewhere.

Yeah, been trying out Kiwami recently cause it was free so why not, and although it's growing on me, it does sometimes like to be annoying with a few trivial things. And the cheesiness in the side-mission scripts can be super eyerolling at times. But no deal breaker. So many aggressive civilians though...

I'm fine with the cheesiness, that's actually one of the great things about it; to see this big, stone-faced criminal deal with some of this wacky shit. But having to click through, sometimes, 10 minutes of voiceless textboxes can be very grating.

I only played a bit, but liked how they have you access it. The first daemonic machine encounter was no joke. Really, it looked like just a mere Ravager (that breathed fire like a dragon) but seemed far tougher to take down than a Thunderjaw from the main game, and that was playing efficiently. I must?ve put 20 or so tearblast arrows into its weak points before even getting to do decent damage, and my bows are upgraded enough to pretty much moonwalk through the base game. ?Tanky much?? was my first thought, and I just came fresh from Bloodborne?s Old Hunters bosses. Can?t wait to see what the hell this frigid wilderness throws at me next.

Not buy any new games until I beat many of the ones I already bought like Pokemon Let's Go, XC2, DQ11 and even some PS1 games that I have on the way but have never beaten like Breath of Fire 4 and Grandia.

Welp, I had a decent graphics card but it died, and since upgrading my PC isn't part of the plan until I notice that it's actually noticeably slower, I just went and bought the cheapest card I could find since I don't play that many AAA games anyway. I did some research and made a list. I'll take this "opportunity" to catch up on some older games I've been meaning to play for years now, or games that don't require all the graphics or games that run fine with some tweaks, mainly:

Ass Creed games. I have a lot of Ass Creed games to play. From what I've seen, up to Rogue they run fine if I lower the res to 1280x720.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. It's the newest game on my list, I believe, but it also runs fine if I lower the res to 1280x720, though I think it looks worse than Commandos and Desperados games, which are... 20 years older.

Also Stalker games, Fear, The Walking Dead, Divinity: Original Sin, Torchlight II, Transistor, Sunless Sea, Darkwood, Stasis, Orwell, Distrust, The Banner Saga, Shadowrun Returns, This War of Mine, etc. Realistically speaking, I expect to finish maybe 5 of these over the year.
