Reinforcing my female stereotype here, but..

I'll buy any adventure/action game where riding a horse is part of the gameplay. Zelda, Shadow of the Colossus, Assassin's Creed...
Even Barbie's horse adventure? oh ih oh ih oh.

On topic* I need something to keep me frustrated. Therefore, I'll be pissed at the game. This will give me another reason to beat the game and be more satisfied.

I like games to have jump button. Even if the game doesn't need it. I always wish I could jump in games where I can't.
Im lookin at YOU, KOTOR I + II

OT: probably story, if I can't get immersed into a story, I won't really like it, but A lot of the time gameplay will make up for it. I honestly could care a less about graphics

Good story.
This, including immersion (which, to me, is having a reciprocal relationship, i.e. the game responds to me and I respond to the game), weapons and explosions. And recently, stealth elements.

I don't know if this is going to make an sense, but Atmosphere.

If a game sucks me in and you can almost "feel" it, I can forgive flaw after flaw.
Same here. I can look past alot of shortcomings if a game either has great atmosphere. Sometimes I'll replay the beginning of Bioshock or a few levels of the Condemned games just because they are positively dripping in atmosphere.

To a lesser extent I would say art style. Never even cared about certain games like Madworld, No More Heroes, or Borderlands until I saw screenshots. My favorite multiplayer map on Killzone 2 is only my favorite because of how obvious it makes that games art direction (kind of like Borderlands but more subtle and much darker)

I've got to have a lot of replay value in a game. This usually comes in the form of either an open world or outstanding multiplayer. I'm also a sucker for character customization, though only in fighting games, because if I can play as Sarah Palin and fight Jesus with the soul edge I'm more than satisfied.

Do you find there to be any "unimportant" aspect in games that you just need for it to "feel right"? It sometimes affects your buying habits or changes your perception of whether a game was good?

For me, for example, I am an outright graphics whore fiend. Many people complain that graphics are unimportant in the grand scheme of a game, but I prefer games that throw millions of lush details into my face over those with a minimalist approach, and it doesn't "feel right" unless I can max out all the graphics options (to the point where I can stand slideshow action). It's silly and maybe a bit damaging, but it's me.

How about you?
Blatantly obvious "invisible forcefield barriers" that by all rights shouldn't be in the game.
You know the boundaries where you can see for miles, but you can't get there? I really hate that.
I also do my best to avoid underwater levels in ANY game (unless it's really good), an underwater level will make me stop the game almost immediately, unless I'm really engrossed.

Reading a few responses, allow me to remind you that this is supposed to be trivial things you LIKE, not your turn-offs.

Definitely Character Customization for me as well. I like putting my self in a variety of shoes in identical situations, letting different manifestations of varying parts of my consciousness take over for each time I play through the game (especially in choice-based games).

Good characters. I can stand (mostly) poor gameplay and a lacking story if there's at least one character I like.
Then again, I've never encountered a character I liked that didn't already have a good story, so I guess story too. I can forgive bad graphics and bad gameplay for that.

Long story.

Don't care about multiplayer, just give me something to do for 40+ hours, and I'm golden.

I like to be able to go everywhere and explore and set my own pace. I have a thing for sandboxy games, although this is also true of more linear games to a degree, and if a game tries to rush me when I'm off exploring (*cough*RF:G*cough*) I get very annoyed. Yes, I know you have missions for me to do, but I'm busy breaking your stuff!

I've always been a sucker for that little thing that some games have that let you...hmm how to say, influence NPCs. Like for example KOTOR II, you could sway good characters to become evil and vice versa.

I think i'll jump on the character customization bandwagon.
My Rockband-band is meticulously dressed, I spend faaaar too long creating Sims characters, My SackGirl is often praised for looking like me if I were made of sack.
I also make myself on Smackdown VS Raw games, when will they let you use women in REAL matches!? I'm fed of having to be a man all the time.

If it's by a developer I like, I'll buy it.

And while all you pocky-lovers are buying your JRPGs, I think I'll be getting into Eastern European games- Bohemia Interactive with Arma2, GSC with STALKER, etc.
On a side note, does Turkey count? it's right on the edge of Europe. They made Mount and Blade. Awesome game.
