If I see it is by Valve or has a familiar character in it (that I like) I'll likely get it.

I also like unique themes and ideas. And Co-op games are more fun than single or competitive.

(was anyone else hoping for this being a thread about what your weakness in games is? As in, what do you suck at most in games? That's what I was expecting).
Yeah I know it sounds toolish and fanboyish but I will buy ANYTHING by Valve. I mean if they put out something thats shit ill admit it, but ill play it till the end first.

Other things that get me,
Humor
A good story line
Inventive weapons/game mechanics
I played Painkiller simply because of the crazy weapons, same thing with bulletstorm. I bought and played the first Portal just because the mechanic was new. (and because it was made by valve lol)
But yeah if i havnt seen it before I'm interested.
and if its well written. funny, dramatic, deep, or dark, i don't care, as long as the writing is good I'll play it.
Oh and A good soundtrack. That doesn't hurt either

Excessive gore and human enemies. Deep inside my mind a little mad bloodthirsty sadist dwells perhaps... But, that is it. If a game lets you blow to pieces, eviscerate, decapitate humans.. I will buy it.
Not that it's the only thing I care about, but still.

Horror executed well in games makes me buy them and then not play them. I always try to buy horror games, but the ones that are genuinely scary just sit on the shelf. Why? Because I'm a massive pussy and can't manage to play through them :<

I know this isn't exactly what the tread is about but my weakness is buying games on steam when they're on sale even if i don't really want them. I have so many games witch i have hardly played and don't really like because it was 75% off and i couldn't resist

a Good opening
either a "Before *insert problem here* happened, the character was like/doing this (Ex: Half Life 2, Fallout 3)
or a thrilling and climatic opening (Ex: Uncharted 2, Modern Warfare 1)

Games with a management element crucial to core gameplay that isn't stupidly complex or requires inhumanly speedy clicking makes me interested. See Deus Ex, STALKER, Tropico, etc.

Games that require a degree of stealth and tactical approach also have me hooked too. See Thief, ARMA2, STALKER and Deus Ex (yet again!), SWAT4, Crysis, Battlefield 2142, etc. That's why I tend to love stalking and escape missions.

I also have a thing for vehicle simulators. See IL-2 Sturmovik, Mechwarrior, etc.

Hmmm this is a tough one.

I'd have to say post-apocalyptic settings of the nuclear type.

So the Fallout and STALKER games are good examples (Except for new vegas, that was barely post apocalyptic)

Space games and LoTR games, games with a tech tree or upgrades, anything that is too large for my own good.

The ability to sprint sideways, go into bullettime, jump, pull off 2 headshots mid air, spin around, switch to crowbar, and bludgeon the bloke behind me in the face immediately upon landing.

... at least that's how Half Life 2 was for me.

A really good story and characterisation will probably get me interested, even if the gameplay is lacking. Or really excellent gameplay. Or the promise of cake.

Which Valve hates so fucking much, they never ever ever make even a passing remark to it in Portal 2. Internet... good job.

Exploration

Give me something to explore in a game, and I will do it:

See pretty much any open world non-linear game

Usually I don't find out until after I've already played a game, but excellent music.

It was the music that really made Halo for me. I love the story and the gameplay, but if it wasn't for the music, it just wouldn't be the same.

real good humor. It's pretty rare, but for example I bought all the latest Double Fine games cause I knew it would be worth it.

also, this one is even tougher, the right type of quirkiness/mindfuck/genuine absurdity. Best example are the Grasshopper games, especially Flower Sun and Rain. That game is just pulling your leg. One of the best moments is when you're supposed to walk an awful distance again, you're thinking omg fuck that. The main character thinks exactly the same, punches someone from his bike and rides all the way over there. Pure genius.

If anything about the plot or setting intrigues me, I'm generally in, even if the game is otherwise pretty bland. Dead Space is a good example; the first game had a whole mess of bad design decisions and clichéd plot points weighing it down, but once I realized the main antagonist was actually in inanimate object that could read people's minds to use their worst fears and guilt against them, I was too interested to not keep an eye on the franchise. I'm glad I did, too, because Dead Space 2 was SO much better than the first one. :D

Over the top characters, fun gameplay, and EARGASMIC music.

That's why I love Super Smash Bros Brawl so much.

Massive alien walkers (WOW-style) often do it for me. They were the decisive feature for me in C&C3, they made buying the Orange Box a lot easier, and if I didn't have that deep dislike for StarCraft and Unreal Tournament, they would've made me buy those two as well. The WOW strategy game from the nineties is obvious of course, although the IP it's connec ted to pretty much started the whole thing.

Grand strategy. Grand Strategy with a tech tree. Make it Historical, or Sci-fi...make it open ended like a 4X space sim or a long term history game...
