"Dig straight down, because Pitfalls are fun and if theres lava you were destined to die anyway."

That is my golden rule.

Don't add too many extra tunnels branching off a mineshaft and if you absolutely have to, label them CLEARLY. Can't tell you how many times I've bee screwed over by tunnels big enough to get lost in.

Hear noises that sound like mining while underground? Shit pants, run back to base, seal off mine and stay out of that area.
Haven't heard that, what's it mean?

I've been looking at the Escapecraft forums. They seem to have a good community there. Unfortunately their server is not updated to 1.3 so it'll be a while

Legend of herobrine. The psychological effect that you are not the only sentient being and also not the only one armed and gathering from the area.

Creeper? Charge him and be a man.

Skeleton? Dodge arrows while making way to him

Spider? swing dodge swing dodge

Threat of mysterious creature that breaks blocks? Shit thyself.
Oh, I know of herobrine. Just haven't heard about that

Mine; When you find diamond (or other valuables), store it away in a safe place IMMEDIATELY.

I once came across 3 veins of diamond on one journey into my mine. Then a creeper blew up next to me. It didn't kill me, but it left me with about two hearts. Oh, and it knocked me into lava. So yeah, about 16 diamond gems, along with a diamond sword and pickaxe, gone. I contemplated my will to live for a while.

Always have a full stack of planks.
Even better, have a full stack of logs, since you get 4 planks per log.

"Always carry a chest, bench, and stove with you.. you'll never know when you'll need them in a cave"

As in if you got loads of items ready to be burned down, crafted, ect. you can't do it in a cave because you left your stuff at home. So, carry an extra set of box-tools with you so you may fuse, burn, and even have some storage so you may never have to take an extra long trip for nothing :)
Actually, that only takes up a lot of inventory space. What you should do is bring a lot of logs/wood. That way, you can easily create a work bench and a chest, and I'd be surprised if you were mining and did not have at least the 8 cobblestone you need for a furnace. That way, those 3 (4 if you include the wood) vital pieces of equipment take up only one inventory space as you move.

5. always know which button is a sword or a dirt block (in case of magma)
4. you can never have enough of anything, even dirt
3. a bow and arrow is worth more then diamonds
2. make a garden wood is properly the most important raw block
1. GIVE YOUR SELF A PROJECT
3.Definitely true. In the same vein, Flint is even more valuable (feathers are abundant enough that that's rarely the problem). A high amount of arrows is a MUST (though I'm the sort to get uneasy when I have less than a full stack, so maybe that's just me)
2. True. I make a point of making a massive tree farm, as well as farming wheat and sugar cane (both useful for different reasons), as well as cacti because, hey, why the hell not?
1. By far the single most important rule. The game is boring with no project. So find your niche (mine is minecart systems and redstone wiring) and go nuts. This is especially useful on MP servers (i.e, I build elaborate minecart stations for my friends in exchange for their help in making an awesome base, since I'm bad at that)

Fuck cobblestone it looks like hell no matter how you look at it.
That fact is why I'm so glad I downloaded a texture mod. Cobblestone looks amazing now.

That's the reason that I Branch Mine. Neat, orderly, efficient.

don't use gold
Except for watches, though they're less useful now that beds exist and were never really necessary on MP servers.

"Never stray to far fom the nest. Unless you you have a compass"
I decided to try out Minecraft about a week before my gaming PC died. I didn't have a tutorial to go off of, and I tried to stay that way... which lasted a day. I wanted to know what I could build. But even hunting out tuts, I didn't know you could build a compass until it was to late (comp died). I suplimented a compass with a marker.

In my first in game Day, I carved a hidey hole in the nearest mound of rock I could find. I had been building around that mound ever since. When I decided to start venturing out, I knew I'd get lost very easily. So I used spare cobblestone to build a spire with torches on top. A spire which I later built a spiral staircase into so that I could augment it's appearance. It served me QUITE well. I made mini spires for any away-bases I made, or places I intended to revisit. Basically a series of blocks-often dirt, stacked on top of each other with a single torch on top. This way, if I was caught in the boonies come night fall, I could see where I needed to run without having to do much wandering.

It worked out quite well.

1) Peaceful mode isn't for wusses.

2) Where there is one creeper, there are more waiting to trap you.

3) Spiders cheat, no exceptions.

4) Always bring something to point the way out of deep caverns.

and lastly...

5) Peaceful mode is for building, exploring, and gathering ores; Easy mode is for gathering more rare supplies like TNT, bones, arrows, and silk; and hard is suicidal and only serves for bragging rights or testing traps you've made.

DO NOT dig up.
Up isn't that bad. If it's water or gravel, you can easily survive. If it's lava, you can always get back and block it off.
DO NOT dig down is much more golden. If it's lava or a pitfall - consider yourself toast.
I've found kind of a loophole through this actually, I just set up some ladders and spam the movement key so that I stay somewhat stationary and then chip away at whatever's beneath me. It's still dangerous but then again, danger's my middle name....[/cliché]
