"When mining, carry a compass."
There's always a chance that I could get lost down there and end up needing to dig straight up to break free. When this happens, it's best to have a compass so I can get back to my spawn point without needing to kill myself or employ a map rendering program. I have gotten completely lost once before

"Minecraft has zero servers."
I'm sorry, but this is pretty much true. If you try to join a Minecraft server, often it'll tell you it's outdated, or the connection will time out. Many servers that ARE running, tend to have a whitelist. Some are also pay servers. If you DO manage to find a normal server to get into, chances are there'll be about a 20 second delay between your actions and the server's recognition of your actions. Now say you finally find a server that doesn't have a whitelist, doesn't charge money, doesn't lag, and is actually up to date. Well guess what? They won't let you handle lava or explosives or anything cool unless you go through the tedious registration process to their pointless and completely arbitrary forum site so you can request a higher rank. And sometimes even THAT isn't enough. Sometimes they also make you brown-nose a server regular until he puts in a good word for you first. So really, there might as well not be any servers, because most existing ones suck.

Hear noises that sound like mining while underground? Shit pants, run back to base, seal off mine and stay out of that area.
Haven't heard that, what's it mean?
Legend of herobrine. The psychological effect that you are not the only sentient being and also not the only one armed and gathering from the area.

Creeper? Charge him and be a man.

Skeleton? Dodge arrows while making way to him

Spider? swing dodge swing dodge

Threat of mysterious creature that breaks blocks? Shit thyself.
Oh, I know of herobrine. Just haven't heard about that
I thought I heard hero brine once... i heard this noise: click-click, click, click-click, click. I paused the game in terror until I watched a youtube video and realized that's the noise a slime makes. Unpaused and hunted down the little bastard for scaring me.

DO NOT dig up.
Up isn't that bad. If it's water or gravel, you can easily survive. If it's lava, you can always get back and block it off.
DO NOT dig down is much more golden. If it's lava or a pitfall - consider yourself toast.
I've found kind of a loophole through this actually, I just set up some ladders and spam the movement key so that I stay somewhat stationary and then chip away at whatever's beneath me. It's still dangerous but then again, danger's my middle name....[/cliché]
Meh... If I REALLY need to dig straight under myself, I just make a 2x2 stairwell. Safe and compact, albeit not too convenient.

My Golden Rules

-Do NOT carry anything you WILL NOT use. That's a lot of stuff to lose
-If a green bush monster wants a hug, run to a place that can afford a scar
-Keep your house well illuminated, if you can't see it from space, you're gonna have a monster spawn thar somewhar.
-If there are more than 3 monsters, DO NOT LEEROY JENKINS IT. EVER.
-A healthy stack of 64 torches should help you in a cave. Should.
-Defuse, then destroy. Make sure a cave is completely illuminated before you start mining.
-Protect your everything. It is nice indeed.

-no matter how far you mine, diamond will always be a block away
-spiders are bastards

When digging a stair case up, ALWAYS block off the bottom until you're absolutely sure that you will not flood whatever is at the bottom of the stair case.

This one doesn't apply anymore but "If you you cut down a tree, clear the leaves away too. I don't care if it takes awhile do not leave floating shrubs everywhere.

Same as always, never mine the block under you.

Does anyone know a decent multiplayer server?

The very best.
It just tells me "Server is outdated".

Unfortunately we have not updated yet and is still running on version 1.2_02.

We need to wait, for Hmod (or you know if Bukkit is ever released) and other essential anti-grief plugins to update.

Even when playing on peaceful, always scan the ground for deep holes. I died so many times from that.

1: It's safer to run.
2: Have a back door.
3: Don't make your first house too extravagant.
4: When moving house, take the bare minimum.
5: Hit a creeper then back away (repeat).
6: If you find diamonds, get the Hell out of there, if you dilly-dally you'll fall in lava.
7: When coming out of your house at dawn, run away in case there's a creeper around the corner.

DO NOT BUY.

Not that I don't think it's great, quite the opposite in fact. I wish to continue as a functioning member of society!
Pretty much this, if I find myself bored for too long I have to start singing in my head or I'll end up buying the game.

If you try to mine something while standing on a ledge above a pool of lava, YOU WILL FALL OFF

Build a ridiculously large tower before you do anything else. That is as good as any stupid compass for finding your way home.
