Your home town's claim to fame

Quite simple really what claim to fame does your home town have? Was a famous person born there or live there? Did some big event happen or some invention created there? etc.

My home town Dumfries in the south of Scotland has 3 claims that i can come up with off the top of my head:

Robert the Bruce killed his rival to the Scottish throne, the Red Comyn in a church in the town in 1306. This made it possible for him to advance his campaign for the throne and eventually gain independence from the English.

The Poet Robert Burns lived and worked in the town until his death in 1796. He was also buried in a cemetery in the town.

The Writer J M Barrie (creator of the Peter Pan story) attended school in the town and the house he lived in during the time is often credited as the place he first thought of the idea for his work.

So what about your home town?

For what?

Town with the highest teen pregnancy rate of the country....

Reading in England- home of the Reading Festival and the location of the old Huntley and Palmers buscuit factory. (The festival is more exciting).

My home town is famous for having never been on a map, been founded in the 1940's and being officially disbanded about 2 years ago...

The town I grew up in had a population of 60. 14 people in the town were directly related to me. (cousins, brothers, grandparents etc) My family was about 25% the population of the town. It's gone now.

Yes, the "town" that I grew up in is now a ghost town.

Ok well I was born in Bristol but spent most of my life in Nailsea. Bristol has loads of claims to fame so I'll give the one claim to fame of Nailsea I can think of and that is that Adge Cutler of the Wurzels lived in Nailsea and is buried in the graveyard at Christ Church.

Were the only city in Chicago land, everything else is a village or town. Which is odd because despite being a city we still just say we live in Chicago land. Can't we just rename Illinois as Chicago land and be done with it?

Well lets see Erie has a few..

We have a few professional athletes to come out of Erie. One of which is Fred Biletnikoff who was a hall of fame American football player.

We also have this old ship called the flagship niagra which is a reproduction of one of the relief ships in the war of 1812.

Heres a list [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Erie,_Pennsylvania] of some famous people that came from erie.

Well, Astoria (Queens, New York, not the one in Oregon)* was the main filming spot for A Bronx Tale (most of it was filmed right by my old apartment, very good movie, you should watch it), and a blackout that lasted for nine days a few summers ago started at the church that was right by me.

*Note: Even though I moved recently, and wasn't born there, I still consider Astoria my home town because I lived there longer than anywhere else.

My home town (Hereford, England) isn't really famous for anything except for the Mappa Mundi and cider but I recently found out that Frank Oz (the voice of Yoda and Miss Piggy) was originally born there and then moved to the USA.

Pretty awesome.

Arbroath has plenty of famous stuff - sunniest town in Scotland (not saying much, but meh), the Scottish Declaration of Independance was written here, and the people who invented the water bed, the sticky stamp, porcelain bathtubs and Buick cars all came from here.
