This asshole:

His only redeeming quality is that he's really easy to kill, just jump into the nearest body of water. The thing I never understand is when they announced inFamous 2 and showed the new look, people were whining and complaining about how he "looks and sounds like a douchebag now." My only response to that was "Excuse me, but did you guys play the first game? He looked and sounded like a douchebag in that too, because he IS a douchebag."
Also what the fuck was that stupid noise he constantly made while running, seriously.

Capcom, please stop putting this...thing into the Ace Attorney series. I beg you.
Okay I didn't think of him at first, but now that I've seen the suggestion, I agree. Meekins is awful. At least stop with the screeching airhorn sound effect every two lines of dialog if he has to be included.

Gordon Freeman. Seriously.

He's just a mute with no personality, no development and no interesting backstory. The only thing people can attach to him is his appearance, and that only ever appears in game art, and yet so many people treat him like he's the Coming of Gaming Jesus.
Gordon Freeman is an example brilliant character creation for exactly those reasons.

Valve understands that the best thing you can do with a story element is to let the players fill some of the holes with their own imagination or personality, so they created a Hero that makes it very easy for the player to feel that they actually ARE Freeman himself. For example, when Alyx (or any other NPC) is talking to Gordon, the players feel that they are actually talking directly to them instead of to their character. When Freeman is referred to as "The one free man", players automatically think "_I_ am the one free man". The more personality the developers put on a character, the less the players imagination get to work.

Gordon isn't popular because people are just jumping the bandwagon. Gordon is popular because he allows players to BE him when they play, filling the blanks with their own personality and imagination. The fact that you don't catch how this works is why you guys would make terrible game designers. Gordon is an ingenius demonstration of the fact that, sometimes, less is more.

Edit: Oh and on topic, probably Jack in Mass Effect 2. Or Noober in Baldur's Gate! :D
I at least dont have a personal beef with Mr Freeman, but i guess what people in the thread are saying is that they prefer characters that emote and react to their sorroundings instead of having Link/Samus(before other M) mute syndrome.

Vanille from FFXIII. GHRAAAAH! Never before in any game did I watch every cinematic with the tv remote in hand just so I could mute the sound every time she started talking and unmute when she stopped. Yes, Hope was also a catastrophe, but my hatred for Vanille and everything horrible in JRPGs that she represents will probably stick with me until I die.
you took the words right out of my mouth

lol @ everyone picking good Final Fantasy characters. You tell those conformists who's boss!

I'd have to go with Quina. S/He's like Cait Sith with brain damage.
Please tell me, what the hell is "good" about squall, titus, vaan, riku and everyone in ff13? these are the ones everyone here are focusing on. maybe its not a question of "teaching conformists" and more about "these fuckers are annoying".
Haven't played VIII, Tidus was never annoying in the least - no clue what you're on about there, Vaan I'll give to you fuck him, Rikku never bothered me (I guess I have a natural tolerance for the chippper people that apparently annoy everyone else) and FFXIII:
Lightning was a straight up badass the whole game
Snow was a bro trying his hardest to be a hero
Hope had legitimate reasons to be depressed, but mans the fuck up after he attempts to murder Snow, and once again when he earns his Eidolon
Fang was meh. At least she's a badass Commando
Sazh was a middle-aged guy trying to keep up with some crazy kids to save his son
Vanille might seem like sugar and rainbows, but she's basically just trying to cover up ruining everyone's lives.
FFXIII's a character-based story. You have to actually play the game and see the characters develop to appreciate them.

This has probably been said already but I don't feel like reading through seven pages of posts.

I won't even bother saying his name. In fact, I'm pretty sure all I have to do is this:

BY AZURA, BY AZURA, BY AZURA! It's the Grand Champion!

Edit: Well I scanned the thread and sure enough someone ninja'd me with almost the exact same phrase.

Im surprised I havn't seen Ashley from RE4 yet. Im also surprised that so many people hate Gordon Freeman, I thought Valve's intent was for you to project yourself on him.

Rico, Vanille or Hope....
Rico, Vanille.... or Hope.....

Let me think about this:

Rico is an idiot who almost ruined Killzone 2. Vanille is an idiot who contributed to the ruining of FFXIII. But hope made me want to jam forks into my ears to avoid having to listen to his little gasping, whimpering noises that he made at almost every opportunity.

So yes - Hope is the worst Video Game character I have ever had to deal with. I could not stand his character. Unfortunately, he was also the only decent healer/synergist for most the game, so I had no choice but to put him in my party. Which made me hate him even more.

EDIT: It wasn't the fact that he was depressed. I can deal with depressed characters. It wasn't the way he looked - kid characters have always been in FF games and I never had a problem with it.

No - it was his lines. Or, to be more accurate, his lack of lines in certain scenes. Half the damn time he's on screen he makes tiny, little whimpering noises like he's constantly on the verge of crying. He screws up his face and his lip trembles whenever he sees Snow. He constantly complains yet doesn't have a better idea of what to do. He's a whinging brat. He does get better about half way through the game, but it's not enough, not by a long shot, and he STILL makes those breathy gasping, whimpering, simpering noises. Not as often, but he still makes them.

My problem with Vanille is entirely with her accent (a hideous mixture of Australian and Californian Valley Girl with a bit of British thrown in) and the way her character walks and moves. I don't mind peppy characters. But I don't like my characters to look like they just walked off the set of damn PLAYSCHOOL. The entire time, I couldn't help but think that she was auditioning for a role in playschool, Hi-Five, Blues Clues or any of those other nauseating children's shows.

And Rico - Rico's just an idiot. He came perilously close to ruining Killzone 2 for me. He'd better get it in Killzone 3.

Cole "WOO, IMMA BE A BIG 'OL BLACK STEREOTYPE, BABY!" Train.

How I hate him more than every character in Final Fantasy 8 combined baffles me. It's a pretty revealing bit of insight, I suppose, to know how these people perceive a black athlete turned soldier. For me it's about as bad as a white man in black face screaming "MAMMY" at me for as long as I play the game and Cole is talking.
See the problem is... the guy is actually like that. He's been in a few commercials and he is EXACTLY as he is in Gears.

Even if it is an act that he puts on, that's how he is. I was just as surprised.

Edit: Dammit now I see my post, what's going on today I can never see my posts till like an hour later.
Yeah, I think I read something like that about him; big guy, lots of fun. Then again I think of other stereotypes people play along with or genuinely subscribe to, and it just feels really disappointing. If that's how the token black wants to behave, who am I to criticize? I'm just a man, black father, white mother, sick of the way we portray ourselves or are portrayed, like monkeys dancing for the organ grinder. He just aggravates me.

BTW I had that same posting weirdness myself a few times. I don't know what causes it, but usually if I post something and it's not there right away, I just leave, and if I check back it'll be where it should.

Right now, it's anyone who knifes me in the back in Assassin's Creed Brotherhood multiplayer when I've been stalking my target carefully for over a minute and am two frakkin' seconds from making the hit!

But otherwise, it's any NPC in a JRPG who wakes up my character when they're sleeping in the beginning. This is why I hate teen protagonists.

Ah, someone else was happy when he...

died at Ostagar? Just desserts, you old fraud!

Who needed him? My wet-behind-the-ears rookie Grey Warden saved the kingdom, restored the crown, defeated the darkspawn and rebuilt the Order without any help from Mr. Wise Old Mentor Stereotype.

Have you noticed how much more successful the Warden recruitment rate is when you're in command?

Rosh Penin from Jedi Academy.

You know how much of a whiny ***** Anakin was in the prequel trilogy? Rosh is WORSE. He's so unspeakably annoying that
I jumped at the chance to impale him on my lightsaber. Like hell it's a "Dark side" choice, I just did the galaxy a HUGE favor!
