Now come on, Carth wasn't that bad. At least he was fantastically well voiced, and had a reason for being a whiny little *****. As long as you're light sided, he won't baww you to death.
Bastila was a bit of a *****, but HK-47 takes the cake. He's not funny. He's a boring twat and the only reason i buy him is for the sand people quest. He chips in to every single conversation with boring repetitive dialogue about murdering the subject. If he were, say, sadistic, i might not be so harsh. All he ever chips in with is "can i blast him now master". You're a 7 foot hunk of metal, and all you can fucking come up with is shooting? What about tearing his limbs off? Spitting battery acid in his eyes?

Slippy. F***ing. Toad.
I know I've been ninja'd many times, probably, but yes. To this day, I'm still doubting Slippy's gender... and also, very annoying. Worst part of Starfox 64.

Also, I'm gonna have to say Jun from Halo: Reach. He was more of a nuance than a help.

And the turian Council member in the Mass Effect series. I just wanna punch him in the face.

Gordon Freeman. Seriously.

He's just a mute with no personality, no development and no interesting backstory. The only thing people can attach to him is his appearance, and that only ever appears in game art, and yet so many people treat him like he's the Coming of Gaming Jesus.
Dont you get it, YOU are Gordon Freeman.
DUN DUN DUN DUUUUNNNNN!!!

But seriously, that is what Valve wants, the player must feel like he is the one in there, that is why he doesnt talk and you never see his face in gameplay, also why there are no cutscenes.

Thought: All these people saying they hate Gordon Freeman actually hate themselves? Would explain why they hate a character whose only purpose is for the player to project themselves onto him, atleast.
I've played Half-Life a lot, and I love the games, but I've never considered myself being Gordon Freeman. If you're doing some role-playing in a role-playing game I can get it, eventhough I find it incredibly awkward, but in shooters it doesnt make much sense to me.
Don't hate or like him, but I can understand why people dislike him. He isn't a character. He is a name with a face we only see on box arts, other than that he's just hollow.

Silent protagonists are always a bit dull to me. Like Link and uhm... other...!

Well then I will just respectfully disagree, and say that you aren't really "playing the role" of gordon freeman, but gordon freeman is supposed to be you, if that makes much sense. If it doesn't, I just woke up, so don't judge me.

OH MY GOD I HATE RESETTI TOO! He's FUCKING annoying. He just won't shut up. I wish you could go to his hideout and kill him with a shovel. "Fuck you, Resetti, I'll reset when I pleaaaaase!"
I kind of wish that I could split his skull open with my axe when he shows up.

I am a big fan of most final fantasy games (havent played the newest one yet so I dont have an opinion on it) but I gotta say my least favorite character hands down is Squall. Fuck that whiny little emo *****. I hated 8 because of him. He made me wish I could play as Seifer, and he was a stereotypical bully prick. Most hated video game character? He's the first thing that came to mind.

Hehe, no I understand what you mean. Just saying that some want more than a cut-out for you to enter while playing a game and it's probably the reason why some people dislike him. :)

Vanille from FF13. I could, and have, go on for days about why, but lets just say that the ONLY way I could feel anything but hate for her is if she was burned alive, healed, dunked in lava, healed, then thrown into a meat grinder. I HATE HER THAT FUCKING MUCH!
Then check this out, someone gratefully animated the final part of yathzee's review of FF XIII

That's so cute! He even broke her womb!?!

I'm not playing the game, but I'm sure I'd like her, more than Rikku at least.
well the guy who created this got inspired for some reason
Ah! I guess I'll never know. I'm not playing FF Corridor.
*I have a biggest gripe with people who can't pronouce her name right. Is French really that hard?

Thanks for posting it, I watched these ZP credits so many times. :D
only this time it's actually moving.

Fucking Kilik from Soul Calibur.

Seriously why is Kilik so ridiculously overpowered?

I should mention that I don't hate Kilik as much as I hate people who try to defend Kilik's blatant balance issues. I have no problem if you play as Kilik and understand that he is overpowered though.
I feel the same way about Zasalamel.
I mean, come on...
The thing about Zasalamel is that, while he is definitely overpowered, it's only really if you know how to play him. Kilik on the other hand, anyone can pick up a controller and then string together an unbeatable series of moves by just mashing buttons. I do still consider Zasalamel cheap though.

Yep, it's awesome to see it come to life. Nice sound on that Gatling Gun too.
It's not that I hate JRPGs I love a few like Golden Sun where my avatar came from. It's just Final Fantasy over the years have become sloppy, unimaginative, lazy design, stagnating, quality and unlikable characters.

The Dog from Duck Hunt. Granted, it's gone into more of a love/hate thing as nostalgia sets in, but he's honestly the first thing that comes to mind.

Also, but to a lesser extent, Moira Brown from Fallout 3. She didn't bug me too much at first - but I did all of her damn missions and got sh*t-I-don't-need for a reward. To top it all off, all of my hard work doing research only got me a laughably useless guide. Granted, I put up with the missions as an excuse to explore subplots in the game, but man did I feel cheated when I got to the end of it all.

Honorable Mention - Ashley from RE4. She didn't really bother me much, but man did my roommate hate the fact that I could do a great impression of her yelling "LEON!"

Ashley from RE4 was god awful. The same voice actress as the blonde girl from Jimmy Neutron. All I could think in my head was her shouting "Neutron!!!" instead of Leon.

Seymour Guado from FFX. Can you be anymore of a creeper.

I hate Duke Nukem; the annoyance factor, and the fact that his name keeps popping up.

Related note, I fail to see why Sephiroth keeps popping up over and over again in the hearts of youth in this culture. I left FFVII in the past, and if it weren't for advent children, it would stay there happily

However I cant say that I hate Sephy and Cloud, I just hate the fawning about them

Tidus from Final Fantasy X. The most obnoxious FF main character to date IMHO.
Aye, it was with him my hatred for J-RPGs began. Used to play Final Fantasy all the time when I was a kid, and while I do like FFX a lot, it would have been way more awesome without that whining brat(and Rikku for that matter).
Hope and Vanille from FFXIII, as many has mentioned, are also two objects of hate for me. I dislike every character in that game, but they take the price.
Same thing here. I actually think Final Fantasy X is a pretty good game. The story was cool and the combat system was decent. Tidus is really, as you said, a "whinig brat"! His voice acting didnt help either...Thankfully there were some pretty good characters in there like Auron (the best character from the game)and Kimahri (he had a good tribal storyarc).
