I couldn't bear myself to get very far in Fallout 3, New Vegas I played for 91 hours.

@Ultratwinkie:

i wasn't expecting a matropolis no, i was expecting not so much blank on my map, maybe like a four house town or something along the way, or one or two of those supermutant slave camps or whatever they are, just something to fill a bit of the emptiness, it doesn't even have to be inhabited, just put in something for me to do after i've been walking for 3 hours in the desert and only come across cazadors (slight exageration of time)

this was supposed to be a reply but i don't know if it worked

New Vegas is better mechanically and functionally while FO3 had a much more compelling story, imo.

I like learning the lore in New Vegas, seeing how the NCR has done since its creation in the first games, hearing news that the west has become humanity's stronghold.

But in FO3 you are in a truly desolate wasteland where every scrap of civilization should be treasured simply because it hasn't died out yet.

In summary, New Vegas has better game play and lore, while FO3 has more immersion and a compelling story.

I prefer the mechanics and gameplay of NV, I found the storyline (both the main quest, and sidequests) and environment in FO3 to be much better.

The big thing, The map, is much better in FO3. I mean, in NV it's pretty much a case of:
"You're in this town, follow the road south. Don't go North, you'll get dead-ed by all the nastiest creatures we could come up with" (someone said Cazadors, but there's also Deathclaws there!)
Whereas in FO3, it's more a case of:
You've found this town, and got some clues that suggest you should head to this place in South-East. But there's so many different ways to get there! The first time I played through I found myself fighting supermutants and raiders in the ruined streets, the next time I ended up sneaking past ghouls in the sewers.

I have to go for New Vegas everytime, 3 was massively atmospheric and was great to explore, but it felt like fan fiction. They pissed all over the lore of the series and made a whole load of decisions which made no sense.

New Vegas has a much better story and just feels like a proper Fallout story.

Besides, I'm playing on XBox, so no mods mean the enhanced gameplay of NV make a big difference.

My 2 cents Fallout 3 is a superb game that I've played to completion something like a dozen times (stupid expansions prior to broken steel).

I like it a lot but I think its kinda like that aunt no one in the family talks about, it doesn't really tie in to the mythos of fallout properly. In new Vegas they do plenty of throwbacks to the old games Marcus, Jacobstown, explaining the vertibird outside of Klameth etc. Hell the supermuties are the proper color again not to mention the return of the Nightkin.

And to be fair all that "new stuff" the modders put into Fallout 3 was just standard fare from Fallout 1 & 2 that Bethesda ignored or thought was lame. If you played Fallout 1&2 (ignored Tactics and brotherhood) there's no way in hell that you'd like fallout 3 more then Vegas

I hear people bash the story of Fallout 3 a lot, but I loved it. It was so great and you could really feel an emotional effort put into the character of "Dad".

Fallout 3 made me go out of that vault with a goal and even after finishing the goal, it didn't just feel like padding, but the story elements just became bigger and bigger until pulling the finalé which was, well, freakin' bad ass.

Right.

Now onto New Vegas.

I didn't like the story as much. It didn't feel as epic until the very end. You strolled after Benny day after day. There wasn't much emotions into the whole "find him" set. With dad in FO3, you had multiple cutscenes where you grew a bond with him.
Birth, childhood, party, and the escape.

New Vegas just had a scene with him shooting you. It seems as if they wanted to have the epic battle at the dam, but they just placed a buttload of padding until you got there.

The gameplay in New Vegas is a massive improvement over FO3, though.

If you could somehow play the Fallout 3 story, but with the New Vegas gameplay, you'd win.
FOREVER.

Edit : Heh, According to X-fire, I've racked up a total of 404 hours of playing Fallout 3. Christ, I need to get out more.

New Vegas is the one I prefer, mostly cause it doesn't have awful story and writing like 3 did. I still really, really enjoy 3 for it's atmosphere and exploration, but it would have been better if it was:

A) Not named Fallout

or

B) Set shortly after the Great War, that would explain away why everyone is still scavenging 100 years later.

Fallout 3 is a great game, but a shitty Fallout game.

New Vegas had by far better game play.

Also, I was bored to death of New Vegas halfway through my first play through.

I have over 300 hours of play time in Fallout 3 and New Vegas prompted me to start another new play through in Fallout 3.

I started with Fallout 3 and bought 1 and 2 before NV came out. I didn't like them. I don't like the atmosphere of NV at all and found the story boring compared to F3. I couldn't get into it and quit after about 3 hours. It was pretty disappointing for me :(

Both are actually pretty equal. Fallout 3 is a little more polished, but new Vegas has a lot of the modded stuff that console gamers can't get their hands on.

The soundtrack for Fallout 3, blows New Vegas's out of the water though. I like Dean Martin as much as the next guy, but Inkspots forever. Still, I play them a lot more than Fallout 1 or 2 (Which I just picked up) and from my non-nostalgia-blinded point of view the two games do not hold up well as time goes on. The rabid, near-delusional fan-base makes that possible.

I used to believe that NV was better due to the improvements such as Hardcore mode, true iron sights and stuff. I mainly enjoyed it because it reminded me of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 (the best IMHO). However, I was discussing this with a friend who had never played a Fallout game before 3, and he said he preferred 3. I asked him why, and he said, "In Fallout 3 you actually wanted to go find your dad, naturally. In New Vegas, the whole helping whoever to take over Vegas just came up." That changed my opinion, and that is why i think that technically, now, NV is better, but the plot and original "wow" factor that F3 had, make it better. BTW I'm 15, and still think that F2 is the best, so the nostalgia factor doesn't really apply to me.

I believe that fallout 3 id better than new vegas because the storyline is not as compelling as well as the skills you can get after each level, new vegas makes the player invest their experience into one role i.e. lockpicker where as in fallout 3 you can do whatever as you gain a skill every level instead of two.

I will admit I do like the fact you now have iron sights and there are some mods for guns but it's not worth it, both games have a tendency to freeze but within the first couple of hours when I was playing new vegas whereas in fallout 3 i started to freeze within the 16th hour.

Fallout 3 is better because is has a more direct approach to missions and you can explore right from the start instead of going the long way round and then take forever to get into the main plot.

Fallout 3 is better for roaming the wastes feeling like a god.

New Vegas has a better story, voice acting, setting and more refined gameplay.

Yet, after playing it more recently, I just feel so much more interested in Fallout 3's setting and everything.

I gave up on New Vegas less than three playthroughs in after doing many, many playthroughs of Fallout 3.

I'll side with New Vegas for one very simple reason.

See, Bethesda is a great company. I remember how mind blowing Morrowind was when you first saw one of those mushroom towers or found yourself gazing out over an epic Ashlands vista. But for all that, they kind of lost the point of a role playing game. Bethesda characters have always been so broad and so unlimited that you never get the feeling of playing through a well crafted experience. You sacrifice any cinematic quality, any feeling of actually being a person determining their course in the face of specific circumstances, for the freedom to wander over miles of identical terrain being attacked by frenzied PCP-addled cliff racers every five yards.

Fallout 3 basically had all the problems of Oblivion. Sure, you could wander around for hours, but there was no point to it. There was no sense of any connectivity to what you were doing beyond a karma score which only came into play a few times in the entire game. On top of that, scaled levelling meant that exploration lost any of its sting. You'd never accidentally walk into a Cazador nest and have to run like hell with five of the little fucking psycho wasps chasing you across the landscape.

Mechanically, it was also really unbalanced. 90% of perks were useless, and a few were so powerful it was jaw dropping, or completely superseded each other, or were radically different depending on the difficulty level you were playing at. Also, most levelling decisions pretty much came down to 'big tough melee guy who shoots up stimpaks like there's no tomorrow', 'VATS guy who is invincible' or 'Stealth guy who absolutely needs a specific piece of gear from a DLC, but after that point is invincible'. Also, the DR system sucked. It was weird that armour which would take a significant edge off being hit by an anti-tank missile would not protect you from a BB gun.

So yeah.. New Vegas. It sacrificed freedom, but it felt more like a Fallout game than Oblivion post-apocalyptic edition.

Besides, it's perfectly possible to go straight from Goodpsrings to New Vegas, you just have to scout around a bit.

Cut across East to Sloan, head North East to Neil's Shack. Sneak North past the mutants and go up the little booby trapped passage to Black Mountain but instead of heading up to the peak head North to the Repcon facility, then keep walking until you hit the Sharecropper farms. At most you'll have to run away from a mutant or a centaur, but you can completely avoid Deathclaws, Cazadors or any other gribblies.

^ Finding that was exploration. Wandering around and finding a ruined building full of Bloatflies was just dicking around.
