I have not had a single alcoholic beverage but I will shortly be at drinking age. What should I try as my first drink? Should I expect my first drink to suck or be amazing?

suck. horribly, unless someone gets you a really nice drink or you get the supposed "girly drinks" (what i drink), they have the same amount of alchohol as the average beer in them and actually taste really good, they are fruity-ish flavored drinks and they taste really good. not too bad on price either.

so for your first drink, get some smirnoff ice (flavored) or some mikes hard(er) lemonade, they are both delicious to me, everything else i've had i only drank because i was playing some party games, otherwise they were gross. (now this is if you just want a decent beerish kind of drink, however if you dont think thats what you'll prefer, go crazy!)

I'm a hard liquor man, my favorite (thus far) being Glenlivet Scotch. Expensive, but worth it. On the beer front, Samuel Adams brews some nice stuff.

Worst stuff I've ever had was neon green and served in a shot glass. I have no idea what it was called, but it was disgusting, no bite at all. I like my drink to remind me that I'm deliberately putting a poison into my system.

Sambuca. On the rocks. Sometimes I'll mix it with either root beer or sparkling cider (about 4 parts mix to 1 part Sambuca). Loves me the Licorice (only black though, that red shit isn't really Licorice).

Failing that, I'll do Vodka in a mixed drink. Usually Screwdrivers, but I'll drink a Cape Cod every now and then.

Sometimes Beer, almost always something by Ninkasi (good luck finding that outside of Oregon though).
