After seeing many comments about controllers, I'll add my own thoughts.\
Before I had a ps3, I was a PC gamer, which I admit has the most benefits of any system. Problem was, my pc was old, and upgrades were quite expensive. And thus I began my long journey into the realm of the consoles. Originally I was going to get an xbox, but my friend convinced me otherwise by informing me that I'd have to pay 5 bucks a month. Anyway, having used a mouse and keyboard most of my gaming life, I was afraid of analog sticks, fearing imprecision. When I got my ps3, much to my surprise, the controller was easy to use and adapt to. It was light (which is a good thing because weight can detract from immersion by reminding me that I had to use my muscles) and more importantly, it was symmetrical. It made sense, and my thumbs were both at the same altitude. It felt less like a controller and more like handles. With the Xbox controller, the left stick is way up at the top...and I'm mostly like "what the fuck for?" Supposedly it helps with FPS's but those are about aiming--the left stick is for movement. My biggest gripe with the 360's controller is the size and shape...i guess it just isn't for me. I've also found that an xbox controller is harder to keep clean, and it acquires dirt and filth quite quickly.
I will admit that the ps3's bottom shoulder buttons can suck (with a cheap hardware addon this can be fixed), and the d-pad is often imprecise. I do like the face buttons better, though.
