2. Shadow of Mordor. Fantastic combat, fun stealth, and the amazing nemesis system make this game amazing. I've sunk over fifty hours into this game and enjoyed every moment.
I wanna know, did you play this on PS3 or PS4? And if you did on the PS3, was there any noticeable nerfing?
PS4. I can't confirm for myself the severity of the nerfing on PS3, but I have heard it is quite bad. Chance I could be wrong, just what I heard.
From what I've read a lot of stuff has been patched since about a month ago. I just don't know what and to what extent.

1. Binding of Isaac: it's really really good. I simply love that game. Best thing about it: it was released on the same day as CoD Advanced Warfare and it rocked the sh*t out of CoD in terms of active players on Steam.
2. A Wolf among Us: Not too shure, if I like this one more or the first Walking Dead. Walking Dead has more emotionally thrilling moments, but a wolf among us is the overall better experience.

3. South Park - the Stick of Truth: It's only a decent/okay game, but an awesome big episode of South Park

4. Metal Gear Rising Revengance: Just bought it this Steam Sale, so I didn't had much time to play it yet. But I already love it after 2hours of playtime. It's just so satisfying to mash your gamepad while slicing a giant robot dude into hundreds of pieces.

5. Warlords of Draenor: The same WoW as always. But this time it has a really nicely told story. Also, I don't have many more games from '14 that could fill this list.

I'm still planning to buy 'This War of Mine' and I'm pretty shure it would make this list if I'd already own it. So an honorable mention for this one.

I really don't have an order. I also didn't play a lot of games that came out this year so here they are by default.

Soul Sacrifice Delta

Velocity 2X

Walking Dead Season 2

South Park

Infamous: Second Son (only because I didn't play much that came out this year. Not bad. Not good. Just OK.)

....and that's it.

1) Marvel Puzzle Quest
2) Hearthstone
3) South Park: The Stick of Truth
4) The Walking Dead: Season 2
5) Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls
6) Five Nights at Freddy's
7) Dragon Age: Inquisition

Unless I'm forgetting some...I've only played these seven 2014 games.
MPQ came out late 2013 on PC so I tend to think it qualifies.

Note: I recently bought The Banner Saga on discount but haven't played it yet. I have a strong feeling it'll find a spot in the top 3 if the game is as good as I've heard.

1) Guilty Gear Xrd
2) Smash Bros. WiiU
3) Under Night In-Birth: EXE Late
4) ???
5) PROFIT!!!

I did play other games this year but those are the only games I played this year that actually came out this year that I actually liked. If publishers hadn't gotten so shady over the last 3-5 years there might have actually been some new releases on my 'Top 5' list that hadn't had an arcade release or beta test (aka 3DS version of Smash) before gracing consoles with their presence.

2014 was a pretty lethargic/yet bloated year for gaming so I was more of a film guy.

That said, I actually got a bunch of 2014 games to catch up on at Christmas, so I might edit this to potentially include Dark Souls II, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Middle-earth: Shadows of MOORDDOOOR, Sunset Overdrive and Alien: Isolation.

As of now, before I've played any of the above though:

Strider 2014 was reasonably fun, I just couldn't really get into it. Tomb Raider's Xbox One version was cool but it's still 2013 technically. Warlords of Draenor was shockingly boring and is tied with Thief 2014 for unbelievably disappointing for me. The Master Chief Collection was cool as fuck, but it slipped up by changing Halo 2's music which was (imo) second only to Halo 3's. Is it any surprise that my Xbox One crashed one mission into Halo 4? I don't think it is. Plus it didn't change the gameplay or story besides including those god awful 343 terminals into Halo 2 so I don't count it. I didn't buy Titanfall, Destiny or Watch_Dogs despite being quite interested in them, alas. It's funny that last year we had the three BEST GARMEZ EVARR, this year we have the three BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS EVARR!

3: FarCry Classic
Why do I count it? Because it changed some of the game mechanics, most notably the binoculars to make the stealth/RADAR system different. It's a fine port but it needed balancing to make the Trigens actually possible to kill on the hardest difficulty. The stealth is broke but it's still essentially FarCry 1, my most favourite game, so fuck yes FarCry.

2: Wolfenstein: The New Order.
Wolfenstein: TNO reminds me much of Halo in that it has just enough features of older shooters to be organic and free flowing with sometimes interesting weapons, but it's also new enough to not overload the player with endless rooms filled with bad guys and knows how to fucking pace itself (and have gorgeous locations). It doesn't play like Halo, but I love it all the same. It also didn't need to be as well written as it was, I am still impressed just thinking back on it.

1: Bayonetta 2.
What else can I say? It's a sequel that intended to fix the issues of the previous game while giving us a new story. It's bright, colourful, wonderful and incredibly ridiculous which is why I loved my film of the year, The Grand Budapest Hotel, too. Bayonetta roundhouse kicking the jet was easily my favourite moment of any game in 2014. Sure it would have been nice to have Bayonetta 2 try to evolve the series but an attempt at an improved Bayonetta 1 is more than welcome, especially since it feels much different on the Wii U game pad and feels quite awesome on it. Tight combat, almost heart felt story, ridiculous attitude and joy throughout. You win, Bayonetta 2, I love you!

1) The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. Fantastic game with tons of new content added. The original was fantastic, but now that it's not a flash game so much of the stuff actually works as intended now. Clever use of RNG mechanics, love the art style, and it's just plain fun.

2) Dark Souls 2. Yeah, not as good as Dark Souls. Blah blah "B-team." Don't care. It's still a Souls game, which makes it head and shoulders better than so much else. DLC was pretty darn good, too. OST was another example of how good Motoi Sakuraba is.

3) Shovel Knight. IMO the shining example of what a Kickstarter game can be. I feel it's one of the few games that sufficiently lived up to the hype this year. Just a fantastic game, if a little short.

4) Far Cry 4. A technicality because I don't own it yet. But I've played a fair bit of it at a relatives house and I'll be buying it soon. Loved Far Cry 3, and this is an improvement. It's the one Ubisoft sandbox series/game that I feel doesn't get stale as quick. I really love the gunplay and the hunting. Plus there is tons of color in this game, same as the last. Not a grey brown shooter in the slightest.

5) Divinity: Original Sin. This game was tons of fun. Fantastic game to play with or without friends. Lot's of freedom regarding the quests and how you can handle things. A really "meaty" RPG.

Honorable mentions: Most of these could take the number 5 spot. There were a lot of great games this year, despite the let down of several AAA games.

Legend of Grimrock 2
Wasteland 2
South Park: SoT
(all of these along with Divinity blow DA:I out of the water)
Transistor
This War of Mine

Step 1: List every game released this year that I bought:
South Park: The Stick of Truth
BlazBlue: Chronophantasma
Tales of Xillia 2
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Bayonetta 2
Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth
Pokemon: Omega Ruby
Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD ReMIX
Super Smash Bros. (3DS/Wii U)
Step 2: Skim it down to "top 5 10" (in no particular order):
South Park: The Stick of Truth
BlazBlue: Chronophantasma
Tales of Xillia 2
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Bayonetta 2
Persona Q: Shadows of the Labyrinth
Pokemon: Omega Ruby
Kingdom Hearts II.5 HD ReMIX
Super Smash Bros. (3DS/Wii U)
Step 3: Reflect on the 2014 of gaming from FPLOON's perspective:
Uh... It was okay? I mean, I currently have zero pre-orders coming up and... uh... To be honest, only two of those games on that list I technically can't play at this time... So, there's that... <color=white>I honestly wasn't expecting to reach "Step 3" at this point in time...

I haven't played played a lot of games due to budgetary issues and time and all of that shit. So, instead of my top five, I'm just going to list off all of the games I played that came out this year amounting to 5.

5. Thief: BLEEGHSDFL:KSVXCV

4. Destiny: The problem wasn't this game being overhyped but that it's just...boring. I mean, yeah, hype had a lot do with it, but everyone seemed so excited. "OH MY GOD!!! LOOK AT HOW COOL THIS GAME LOOKS" and I'm thinking "I we looking at the same gameplay footage? The ones that look like...well, every other shooter ever? By the time it came out, it was a near-death slap of reality to a lot of people. I'm hoping that people are going to be prepared for the next time something like this happens, but...it keeps happening :(

3. Titanfall: This one I can get behind. You're not going to see me go out of my way buying this game or see me spend a lot of time on it, but it is quite fun. Giant robots? Flexible character movement? Fast paced multiplayer? Giant Robots? And, also, Giant Robots? It's not the best, but it's fun enough.

2. Mario Kart 8: Nintendo just provided the most refreshing breath of fresh air by virtue of not really doing anything to change.

1. Super Smash Bros for the Wii U: Yeah, once again, the same thing with Mario Kart. We've all played it before and we know what to do, but damn is it just so much fun. In an age of heavily market games of nothing but brown and shooting, these two Nintendo games may not be the ones we deserve but the ones we need. And on what gamers deserve? Not much, honestly...Santa has been seeing the way some of you have acted, we haven't exactly been the best.

Anyways, I guess The Walking Dead Season 2 and The Wolf Among Us are two games that came out this year. But, honestly, the only thing interesting to talk about with those games is that they aren't as interesting to talk about as the first season of Walking Dead, but I've yet to play the season finale of the new game. Also, I've yet to play Game of Thrones.

I'm struggling to think of five games released in 2014 that were worth playing. What a lousy year. Good thing I have a steam backlog.

Anyway,

5. Dark Souls II
4. South Park: Stick of Truth
3. Endless Legend
2. Valkyria Chronicles (PC)
1. Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes

Yes, I know Valkyria Chronicles originally came out on the PS3 in 2009ish and I played it on the PS3 back when it came out but including the PC release is the only way I'm going to get 5 games on my list. Maybe some Christmas miracle will get Bayonetta 2 on a platform I actually own, then maybe I won't have to count it.

1. Evil Within - Oldschool survival horror action. Absolutely loved it.

2. Dark Souls 2 - Superb in its own way if you don't compare it to the original. I hope the next-gen version released this april will be graphically more akin to the pre-release build, which looked a million times better and had more emphasis on the light/dark mechanic.

3. DriveClub (post-patch obviously)

4. Shadow of Mordor - Never gave a shit about LotR but a mix of AC and Arkham makes for a really fun game.

5. Alien Isolation - Best use of the Alien license ever.

----

6. GTA5(remaster) - A technical marvel on previous consoles and the remaster only adds further polish. Not necessarily the best game, but definitely one of the most impressive games I've ever played. Oh and the first person mode is awesome.

7. Lat of Us(remaster) - Again, a game that has been further polished for current-gen systems though not to the extent of GTA5.

8. Battlefield 4 MP(techinically finished this year)

9. The Ubis(Far Cry 4, Watch Dogs, AC Unity) - Faults/bugs/shortcomings of these games are grossly exaggerated. I found them all enjoyable and(with the exception of FC4) they atleast tried to do something new.

10. Outlast(PS4 version) - Atmospherically very cool. Having to run away/hide in lockers/repeat every auto-fail encounter however isn't.

11. Sleeping Dogs(remaster) - Still a very good game. but 'remastered' with very minimal effort.

12. Destiny - Shooting is alright. Design of the game is shit.

So yeah, no classics were made this year but there were some good games none the less. However I'm mostly just killing time till Bloodborne and Arkham Knight. I have blind faith in Miyazaki and Batman just looks amazing as well. Just a few more months till Bloodborne guys. :)

The Binding of Isaac Rebirth: The original was great although it had its fair share of issues. And despite those issues I still logged almost 300 hours into it. Rebirth is an improvement in every conceivable way.

Dark Souls 2: Perhaps not as good as Demon's and Dark Souls, but I still love it.

Walking Dead Season 2: Along with season 1 probably one of the most engaging stories in a video game I've experienced.

Shovel Knight: Uses retro nostalgia as a jumping off point but is a fantastically well designed game in its own right. A whole lot of fun.

Uhh, struggling to find a fifth game that really stuck with me. I guess I'd go with Smash Bros 3DS. My first Smash game since the original so there's a bit of nostalgia there. Plus it's a pretty good game anyway. And it's probably the first 3DS game that I've really loved since, I don't know, maybe Kingdom Hearts 3D. That was a long time ago, finally feel like I'm getting my money's worth.

It's funny, because as the year comes to a close, I can't remember which games I played in the first half of the year. For example, when I saw South Park: The Stick of Truth in the game of the year awards bracket, I thought to myself "I thought that came out last year..."

That being said, here's my list.

5) South Park: The Stick of Truth
Honestly, I found the gameplay to be a bit lackluster, but it's like a ten hour episode of South Park in which I AM A DAMN CHARACTER! Of course I love it.

4) Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
Meh story aside, I had a bucketload of fun murdering orcs in many interesting and creative ways. Also; mind-controlling all the officers and then making them fight their own army? Priceless.

3) Dragon Age: Inquisition
Great story, beautiful environs, inoffensive (though sometimes dull) combat, and the fantastic fun of crafting my character's personality puts this on my list. Giving my warrior an arc from a grim stoic loner to a compassionate woman breaking out of her shell and saving the world with the help of her friends was a lovely experience. If BioWare shines anywhere best, it's in this department.

2) The Walking Dead: Season 2
Clemen-fucking-tine. Seriously, guiding her through this adventure was marvelous. I especially liked when I made choices I though were for the best interest of everyone, but then ended up screwing things up in a royal way. I played the game like Clem wanted to be Lee (my Lee was selfless and always tried to do the right thing), but the folly of her youth and the world at large just beat her down into another grim survivor. I totally watched Kenny beat Carver to death. Unblinking.

1) Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel
It was more of the same, and I ate it up with a big honkin' spoon. What can I say? I love Borderlands to death.

Honourable mention goes to Wolfenstein: The New Order for being awesome, but not quite awesome enough to make it to my top 5, and the new 1.8 version of Minecraft because screw you I still play this way more than everything else combined so it's going here.
