Aside from stuff I can't actually finish (Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress etc.), the Age of Wonders campaign for any of the games in the series. I'm just awful at that game, fun though it is.

Odd, really. I've cleared other hard games (IWBTG, ADOM, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Nethack, Touhou games on Lunatic, XCOM: TFTD) quite handily, but this... this is just horrific.

Haven't played it yet, but it looks quite easy by the genre's standards. Getting a good score would be somewhat harder and more tedious, but I'd rate Touhou as higher on difficulty depending on the game/difficulty setting, and that's often considered one of the less harsh bullet hell games.

Also, that reminds me. Subterranean Animism, Lunatic difficulty. Crime against humanity.

The part where you HAVE to beat the arcade version of Donkey Kong... I just gave up on it at that point
Fuckin' hated that part.

That's actually the only game I can think of right now. Give me a few minutes and I could probably bring a Christmas wishlist.

I can't motivate myself to beat Deus Ex, not sure if that counts though as it's me and not the game.

On the top of my head;

Ninja Gaiden 2(I believe... the one for 360!)
Too hard and not that much fun. Haven't played it over two years though, so I'm not excatly sure why I quit playing all togeather. Since I'm a bit of an achievement whore it's not like me!

Prince of Persia: Warrior Within(PS2 version)
Finished perhaps 20% of the game several times, but I never got past the clockwerk level. I didn't understand what to do... Finished it on PS3 without any issues however.

Fracture/Siren Blood Curse/Spider-Man: Web of Shadows/Army of Two
Bought them at the same time when I first got my PS3. Didn't like any of the games from the start so I hardly even tried them.

Doom III
Had the game since around it's release, but I can only play it a bit every couple of years... and then I need to take a break after perhaps 5-10 minutes of game play. It just creeps me out(was my first shooting horror game, so it has a deeper effect on me)!

on a joking mood, i never did finish "Alone in the dark", i just couldnt, after the whole "destroy so many roots" "get the eye" "see the thruth" i was like "yeah! i am halve way! i hope this game gets better!!" and then "destroy so many more roots" i just stood up and turned off the game, seriously? after all this "semi-investigation" "halve assed" "stupid incongruous" fetch game, i have to do it again?!?!?, i never did finished that game.

on a more serious mode, Silent Hill: Editors Cut, i just cant seem to get to the ending, perhaps its because i dont like to save, go away for a few weeks/months and come back to the old save, so i have gone trough the first two hours of the game over and over again, and when i find my self in a sittuation that i cant seem to remember or find the exit, or something, i just give up and think "meh, i´ll play it later" which means i am going to go ahead and try again from the beginning!!!

aside from those 2, everything else i have finished... i think

I hate to leave a game unbeaten but... Alone in the Dark. That game was so bad I couldn't stand it anymore after about 1/3 through.

Bayonetta-Simply because the stupid part on Chapter 10 where you have to use a specific type of combo to beat the mission. I said fuck and this wasnt fun in dantes inferno/darksiders/GoW.

Star Ocean- I got lost yeah not a good reason, but I just get lost in JPRGs for some reason. I never seem to know where to go.

LoZ Games are great, even back on its older era of the Gameboy Color, but this one, I just can't seem to find my way around in, I've been refraining from looking on the internet to finish this game with, but one of these days, I'll just have to find out.
Oracle of Season and Oracle of Ages are both really hard. But they are great games. I've beated OoA 3 times and I still don't remember how to do everything. Not to mention in that one you could screw yourself over and never be able to get the Mirror Shield.

Timesplitters is the only one I owned that I couldn't beat because the disk was scratched when I bought it. I looked for the receipt for almost an hour too, but couldn't find it so I couldn't return it to them.

It haunts me to this very day-

I'm the kind of guy who manages to finish Treasure Island Dizzy and complete a 4 white mage run on Final Fantasy and win the major victory on Expert on Medieval Total War,

but I can't beat the last level of Advance Wars 2 :(
Is your avatar from "I have no mouth but I must scream?"
Yes, but shh, keep it down, Harlan Ellision might jump out and try to sue me at any moment.

Dead Rising. I tried a few times to get past the convicts in the jeep, but it never worked out and I lost all will to try.

Pokemon Emerald. R/S/E are the weakest games in the series for me, and the even worse grinding necessary for the Elite Four makes me stop playing once I beat the gym leaders.

Grand Theft Auto III. That final mission. That final fucking mission. Though to be fair, I haven't attempted it in five years.

There are actually several games I haven't finished. Popular titles too. Not because they're too hard, but my attention span isn't what it used to be and I keep moving on to other games. Assassin's Creed 2, Red Dead Redemption, just finally went back and finished Saints Row 2 after not playing it since summer. I'll get back to the others eventually; they're great games and I'll get the motivation back someday.

On that note, the only one that is too fucking hard for me is Dragon Age Origins. It could be because it's the first and only fantasy-style RPG I've played and I'm not leveling up efficiently. All I know is that the Archdemon is fucking impossible. I start the fight with most of my armies still intact only for them to get obliterated without causing much damage. I finally got into a rhythm where I keep using my best spells (I'm a mage) and dodge his attacks, but HIS HEALTH BAR IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS.

So by the point where he starts flying around and a bunch of darkspawn come after you, I'm all out of potions and I get hacked to pieces. And he's still not even close to dying! I had to rage quit after my billionth attempt and haven't gone back.

Anyone have any tips for that fight? It seems stupidly unbalanced to me. I understand final bosses have to be hard, but this is like trying to cut down an entire rain forest with a butter knife.

Come point at pretty much game on my shelf, chances are that I haven't finished it. It would be quicker to list the games that I have finished.

I have many I havent completed for one reason or another but Final Fantasy VII is probably the one that fits most. Got all the way up to the final battle... and had no ribbons, thus making the fight impossible for me. Ugh lord how I did try but eventually gave up and just watched the ending online, didnt wanna start all over again. Final boss fight be damned I wanted to see what happened.

Mass Effect 2 ive beaten it in all the difficulties except Insanity and i know for a fact no matter how hard i try i wont be able to beat it.
Also Gran Turismo 4 no way ill ever get 100% on it i got it in GT2 but that took weeks and that game is half as big as GT4.
ME2 on Insanity was tough for you? It didn't feel a whole lot different than Hardcore personally. Just took more restarts to complete sections (a lot... LOT of restarts). I'm pretty sure in some sections (like the final area) I watched the loading screen more than I played, and it got pretty repetitive, but I'd think if you can make it though Hardcore you can make it through insanity. Insanity over Hardcore seems like it just means you die in .45 seconds outside of cover rather than in .63 seconds outside of cover.

Anyway, back on topic. I don't think there's a game I've played (that's actually had an ending) that I haven't been able to beat at least on 'normal' difficulty. Only reason I don't beat most games is I just feel 'done' with it and don't really want to finish them. Final Fantasy Tactics gave me a run for my money back when I first played it, but in future playthroughs I just made a calculator class and lol'd though the game.

Mega Man 10
I KNOW.
It's one of the easiest in the series, I'm playing on easy mode, but I just can't beat that bloody castle.

Final Fantasy Tactics. I love that game, but I'm just bad at it. As hard as I tried, I never got past the second-to-last fight of chapter 2.

Silent Hill, because I'm a complete coward and got too freaked out the first time I went into a sewer area, and monsters started coming down from the ceiling at me without that radio noise sound to warn me that they were there first. Haven't touched it since.

Sonic Unleashed. I'm one of the few that actually like that game, but the fact that it locks the levels (the mandatory levels, that is) until you have enough medallions just infuriates me. It's a Sonic game, it's supposed to be a fast paced rush forward, not a tedious scavenger hunt backwards.

Tbh, none of my games that I didn't finish would be attributed to not being finished due to "too hard", a lot of people are posting that they didn't finish due to glitches, bored, scratched CD's, couldn't be bothered, or flat-out didn't like the game.

To me, the only game that falls in the category that the OP is talking about is:
- Battletoads on the Genesis.
- Syndicate on PC (anyone remember that? Came out in '93)

Other games that fall into the category of 'bored and put down' are:
-Ninja Gaiden
-Alan Wake
-Dead Rising 1 & 2
-Splatterhouse
Not saying that I'll never go back to them, they are all great games, but just on the backboard next to other great titles out today
