I just heard the new Doom game has parries.

Yes, Doom, the games where you stomp about blasting demons in the face with shotguns in first person, has freaking parries.

"Oh there goes this guy bitching about parries again" Well yes they keep putting it in everything! Aaargghh....

Good news...you can make the parries as easy or as difficult as you want in the difficulty/acessbilities options at anytime. No repercussions. BTW, Ultrakill (an FPS) has parries before Doom did.

We actually talked about this almost a month ago, in the same thread, though you weren't complaining at the time.

Did you play Double Dragon Gaiden yet? You don't have to worry about parrying in that game. Nor whenever Double Dragon Revive and Rushing Beat X release this year.

No I'm into other kind of games right now.
I'm not complaining because of my experience with these games, I'm just observing and mocking a trend.

TO BE FAIR.....
It isn't the end all be-all for the combat of the game. I have seen people say that you can still SSG demons in the face and it still works.

was thinking, if the Doom series were to put in the games the canon of the bunny rabbit origin, it can't just be a one-joke reference. they have to go all out, and with the driest most self-serious delivery anyone has ever seen. am talking bout about doom slayer finding ways to confront such trauma by like starting his own bunny garden, collecting various types of bunny across space and time, customising their habitats, tending to their bunny needs,, crossbreeding them, training them for the bunny races and those dog show type events except with space bunnies - if this is starting to sound a little like sonic adventure 2's Chao gardens, that's cos it bloody well is god fucking damn it! and hey....heyyy, we're in a post-stardew valley world too so why not throw in some cute co...c....cooo....oohhh...nope I'm not saying the c word, not this time, some gardening? Doom slayer watering space carrot plants to harvest as food for his growing space bunny army in-between brutal gory slaughter levels is precisely the (optional!) jarring swerve the series needs: eternal had his own space castle home anyway so come on we're already halfway there! make the final leap, cowards! real talk if by some miracle this ever materialises in the minds of the Devs, let it be said: spare no expense. I wanna see them bunnies have access to a sprawl of custom-tailored fashion, fur styles and personality traits. the goth bunny cult provides

just heard yahtzee review of recent game and think he seems to have missed various things, from what I've seen at least:
- - 1. just cos a game isn't outright throwing silliness at you it does not mean it's taking itself seriousy - this is an issue I see with people interpreting dry comedy films also, there's a lot examples where fun is clearly being had but cos it's not loudly winking, people assume it's sincere. I expected better from a fellow brit tbh, but on the other hand he has lived in America for god knows how many years now: that's a lot of lead, mercury and radiation poison potentially unaccounted for!
- - 2. He said there's no "fist bopping" of the collectables no more so evidently fun has been removed and comedy is now illegal guis - did he miss the beasty collectible where sir slayer literally zoomie zooms it around like a toy fucking plane when picking it up?! come on, don't let the calcification of the brain take over this badly lol

Checkpoints during boss fights should only be done if defeating the boss (within a single fight, I mean) is expected to take a long amount of time, like over 10 minutes. In my opinion, a good boss is supposed to either teach you something for going forward or confirm that you know something. That being the case, I'd rather beat a boss because I actually learned what they want to teach/test rather than hitting a phase transition through nothing but bloody-minded persistence and being told 'eh, good enough'. For short-to-medium-length boss fights I'd rather redo it until I actually get it right, and even for longer ones I usually don't mind redoing them from the start to do the early parts better with more knowledge of what's going on.

Admittedly, mid-boss checkpoints aren't something I usually hold as a negative against a game. I just prefer to do fights like that 'properly'.

Ooh, yay, a genuinely interesting take I kind of disagree with!

Ok.. well, I think to me a lot depends on the nature of the fight. Some boss fights put a checkpoint sort of "in the middle" but it's still the same kind of fight. Most recent example I can think of is South of Midnight, where they may have added a small wrinkle in the latter stage of the fight (more projectiles, wider AoE, etc) but it's still basically the same thing. And since the combat is simple and the fights rely on understanding when to attach and which power to use (what some call "gimmick" fights but I hate that term), it would probably what you're talking about. And I can kind of see your point in such instances.

But two-phase boss fights are where I want a "checkpoint." Orenstein and Smough is two whole entire different boss fights- one against two guys, and a second against a whole other superguy. And to make me fight the two guys- which involves a lot of patience and focus in not getting surrounded- just to try the superguy again is bullshit, IMO.

The last boss in Sekiro is like a mix of all of this. First you get another round of a previous boss, then three rounds of the final boss, where the first two rounds are kind of similar but the third round is pretty different. And I will admit that having conquered the the three rounds is one of the most satisfying gaming accomplishments of my life and I wouldn't feel that if there were checkpoints. But having the first guy before that is some supreme nonsense.

I don't know, I wouldn't have been opposed to some mid-boss checkpoints in the Dark Souls 3 DLC rather than do the first phase of the fight over and over when I've already mastered it 10 attempts back and can do it taking hardly any damage.

These kinds of fights are endurance tests though too. Beating Sis Friede or Isshin IMHO wouldn’t have felt the same if they had checkpoints.
