I find the age of consent law rather arbitrary. I understand the need for it, but at the same time it needs to be flexible. I think down to 14 there is room for manouvre. Bearing in mind factors like maturity, age of partner, whether any harm is caused and so on. Because I think we all know an 18 year old that is too immature for sex, and we probably all know someone who lost it at 14 and shows no signs of massive mental trauma. It's a very individual thing.

I hate it when people claim that 13-14-15 year olds know nothing about sex. That's bullshit, I did it perfectly fine. So shit off.

I knew exactly what to do, what safety measures to take, what it would mean for the relationship, and how to ration it so it didn't control the relationship.

I did all of this at 14 years old, and I know for a fact, that most adults can't do any of that for shit.

Some adults are just as stupid as children in this respect, I find underage sex is ultimately fine. It is illegal to have sex 'underage,' but it cannot be enforced. Especially here in Britain, where the enforcing of this law is... well, non-existent. So it has to be regulated, which I am totally fine with. Condoms, and the pill are talked about extensively in schools, which is good stuff.

People are going to become sexually active at different times, and some people are going to engage in sex a tad younger than the law allows. At this point, you need to tell the young ones to take proper precautions, to stop the flow of babies. As long as there is no baby in the picture, underage sex is fine by me.

But I thoroughly hold the belief that nobody over 18, can have sex with anyone under 16. I think that's a bit off... And it should be off, because its pedophilia.

I see no issue with either honestly.

Sure, I'll consider your example of slutty teens slutty, all right. But hell, they can be a slut if they want to. Either they'll be more popular or their reputation will be trashed and that's on them.

I just think that if teens are careful to some degree, then that's a nice relief. But they're gonna have sex anyway. At least I'm pretty sure.

Quite simply people will not wait until they are 'mature' enough to have sex. The best thing to do is to teach them at a reasonable age, like 13 I guess, and stress the importance of safe sex. The extreme promotion of abstinence is just idiotic to me.
If you really think kids will wait until they are mature enough then you're only fooling yourself. Laws against it will not help, only promote those under the age to lie about it.
To sum it up, kids will not wait, just make sure they know what they're doing. They won't, or plenty won't, 'think things through' so the best thing you can do is just hammer in safe sex.

you're 15 years old, you don't know shit about shit and pull up your pants!

with that said, i have no problems with 13-15 year olds having sex with eachother, as long as there is birth control in the picture, a 17 year old having sex with a 13 year old is just wrong and sort of pedo in a way.
As long as there is a appropriate age difference, age don't matter that much, as of myself; I would not go below the age of 17 (the legal age here is 16).
But sure! experiment with a good friend! that is the easiest way to get over that insecurity.
(Use Birth control pills or Condoms)
I'm gonna play devil's advocate and ask why 15-13 year old sex is ok but 17-13 year old is wrong.

15-13 starts to be a problem too, I'd keep it within 1 year.

But clearly there is a maturity difference between the average 17 year old and the average 15 year old, and the spread in maturity and experience between the 17 year old and the 13 year old leaves them in a position where they can easily manipulate the 13 year old.
I'd say you almost got it. It's true, people tend to be manipulated more easily at that young age, but it doesn't have to be from someone who's necessarily older.

Ultimately, if both are equally mature, then it should be no problem, which is what I was getting at originally. Gramzon here said that it's ok if people have sex when they're young and if they're both mature, but why is it wrong for 17-13 if they're both equally mature?

The thing is, a court can't prove "maturity" it can only prove things that are hard facts. Like age.

Age and mental maturity are quite separate. My being "OK" with it depends much more on mental maturity than age. There are 30 year olds who, I think, don't have sufficient mental maturity to be having sex. Conversely, there are 13 year olds who likely do.

I realize the law can't really work with that. I think 14 is a reasonable cut-off. Certainly not perfect, though.

If both sides are very mature for their age, use all of the right protection and aren't the type to cuss out the other if/when they break up; yes. It's fine with me.

It's okay. I don't really like the laws for that. In New York, the age of consent is 17. So, when I was 17, and I was gonna do it with my 16 year old girlfriend, it would've been statutory rape. RAPE. Fuck you, law. She wanted it.

Consent, maturity, and some common sense/knowledge/intelligence is all you need.

It causes more problems than it fixes.

Also, go out and see the movie Kids [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113540/]. Report back when done, and we'll talk from there.

I'm fine with it, as long as its not a 20 year old sleeping with a 14 year old (i know of examples of this). If they are roughly the same age and feel ready then let them.

In law i think it should be represented by a staggered system. a minimum age (say 12) below which sex is 100% illegal. Between this lower limit and a set upper limit (say 16) two people of similar age can legally have sex, if one party is above the upper limit it would be considered illegal. After they turn 16 they can sleep with anyone they like
You've still got the threshold issue there. Under your proposal and under current UK law a boy born in June '98 and a girl born in August '98 can have sex without him being a criminal any time from August 2010 until June 2014 and any time after August 2014 but not in July 2014.

It would be wiser, I think, to say it's illegal to have sex with a girl under 13, it's illegal for anyone more than 12 months older than her to have sex with a girl over 13 and under 15, it's illegal for anyone more than 24 months older than her to have sex with a girl over 15 and under 17 and it's illegal for anyone in a position of authority over her to have sex with a girl over 17 and under 19, then after she turns 19 age ceases to be a legal issue. {Note use of arbitrary figures to illustrate system.}

"Kids" have sex in the 13-16 range, for some it's normal. Personally, I never participated in that age bracket, because I didn't feel I was ready, to each their own. I'd say I would frown upon it, but I have to be realistic, kids are going to be kids, it's called puberty. I think it's funny that it's so demonized in America, that they'll jail a 17 year old boy for having sex with a 14 year old girl, and call it statutory rape, essentially 'victimizing' the girl. Then, while the boy is off to juvenile detention, she gets a new boyfriend and 'consents' to more 'statutory rape'.

A lot of kids get away with it though. It really depends on how well liked the boy/man is, who he is, etc. It's really quite serious in America, with the sex offender laws. There are thousands of adults that got tagged and have to register as a 'sex offender' for the rest of their lives, because they had sex with someone younger. It's become the quite the controversy if you read up on it.

What's next, two kids being sent to military school because they got caught playing 'doctor'?

As long as the age gap isn't too much, I'm okay. Although I am weird-ed out when I hear about it in my school. Mainly because there is probably a lack of Birth Control/Condoms.
