I might pay for it if the content was good, original content with good enough production values and put out regularly.

But not many (or ANY) Youtubers would qualify for that, so in practise, no.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
I get the feeling this is more for like networks to put tv shows on youtube, and no I wouldn't do it. I already dislike using my credit card online.

On the whole, very little on youtube is good in the first place, and almost nothing is "pay for it" good, and a lot of what might be can update so erratically.

In that, I see the only upsides: channels flop under the realization they were only popular as free entertainment, and channels that have to keep content coming lest they face angry subscribers upset their 99 cents or whatever got them nothing for the month. taking out people that lose interest in doing their webshows when a new video game comes out.

FUCK NO, the last time I did a free trial of something I had to wait a month to take off the auto pay, and plus the content would have to be lordly in order for me to even consider it. Although I have to admit some people would buy it because you know lazy is lazy and they will pay for the convenience just like how people pay for the $1.00 costume packs or weapons.

No, the stuff I watch are random videos from people who want to share something. Those kinds of people would just move to another site who does it for free. I don't follow channels.

Would you pay .99 to...let's say 3.00 (American) monthly for your favorite Youtubers? Now the way in which the article makes it sound, each channel can charge a subscription fee. So if you have a series of favorites, that could really add up fast, no matter the cost.
the internet won't allow this to happen, the power of social media will curbstomp the idea into oblivion.
and rightly so, also if i add up my subscriptions that's 99x27 which becomes £26.73 a month for youtube.

no thanks, bye youtube die in peace. 'waves' there are other web video sites one of those will take over.

Nope. Never found a single thing on YouTube worth paying to watch.

Funnily enough, back when both Google and YouTube started pushing for people to use their real names a friend and I got into a bitter argument over just why they had decided to do that. I held the opinion that they were doing it as the lazy way out to cut down on trolling, he claimed they are doing so as a step in a long term plan to start charging their customers for what they used to give them for free. Well, looks like I owe someone an apology as they look to have been 100% correct.

Okay, there are some great, funny, and talented people on Youtube who make regular quality videos that I really enjoy. Most manage a weekly production schedule. Smooth McGroove. Jontron (more like monthly, IF we're lucky). Completionist. Caddicarus. Game Theory. Continue Show. And several others.

There's no way I would continue to watch their videos if they made me pay to do so. And some of them, I look forward to on a weekly basis. But much like the people over at That Guy With The Glasses, I enjoy them because they are free. I'll happily watch a commercial if that helps fund them and allows them to continue to make their show. But I wouldn't pay. Especially not ALL of them.

I could be talked into paying for Team Four Star if it meant they could make episodes faster, though.

If Youtube actually implements a paid subscription for channels then we'll all be able to know the exact day that Youtube dies and all of its competitors will be dancing on their grave.

I could see this being a pretty awesome thing if done well. Youtubers could put up videos early on the paid channel, remove ads for the paid channel, the paywall would act as a pretty effective block to spam and trolls even if it was the minimum amount. This really could go either way but I could see it as a good thing for both Google and content providers if it isn't abused too much.

edit: I'm reading through the comments and it's becoming very clear that almost no one read anything but the title of the thread

I only subscribe to one channel, and I seriously doubt that Enzo and Ozzy would go to a pay model. I binge on TotalBiscuit like once a month, but that would likely stop if I had to pay for it. I really only watch the reviews for games that I already have or am interested in. He doesn't cover enough of those in a month to justify an actual cost for the videos.

Well, there's plenty of people that subscribe on twitch.tv, but the livestream content is already free for all to see on twitch, subscriptions can just add access to chat feautures, emoticons, no ads, and VoD access, depending on what the content creator sets up.

I suspect that YouTube channels that choose to use this feature would do things like, early-release of videos on a sub-channel, or perhaps extended cuts and the odd special feature, but the majority of their content would still appear on their main/original channel.

If this BS actually becomes reality, youtube is going to die, simple as that, I will stop watching it and I am betting the majority of other youtube viewers will stop and start searching for an alternative

There is nope.jpg pictures in the world that I could fill this thread with that would accurately sum up my thoughts to this. If I was subscribed to a channel and they did this, I'd just stop watching them and move on to a better source.

I'm a pretty big YouTube watcher, so there are actually a few people who I would consider paying to see more of (namely the Vlogbrothers and sxephil/SourceFed (and possibly SeaNanners)). However, I'm pretty sure all of them have explicitly said that they won't be switching to a monthly paid model no matter what. Which I think is the right move. No matter how popular you are, you're going to lose a large percentage of your audience if you switch to a fee, and its going to be very hard for your audience to grow significantly. Ultimately I think (and hope) that the subscription thing won't really be popular among YouTubers.

Youtube is pretty much > 50% of my daily entertainment, but no.

With so much free shit you can get online, Youtube thinks I'll consider paying out of pocket for gameplay with people talking over it?

No, what would happen is I'd begin playing games more than I watch them.

A few channels I watched tried it. So I flat out stopped watching them, you can put it on the shelf but I'm not buying it.
