So, while browsing the many videos on youtube, i got to thinking. What in the hell is the point of youtube commenting. It's either populated by trolls or people who feed them. There is no discussion value to it at all. You also get those people who say "thumbs up for.. " or "1025 people are gay".

The only sort of reason I can see it being there is for user interactivity, for example when the vlogger says comment about the QOTD or something along those lines.

In essence, the YT commenting system is just full of people who argue with each other and add no value to the video, and I don't see the point in it at all. However, i feel that if it wasn't there at all youtube would lose a lot of its popularity.

What are your thoughts?

People need to know they're alive; as human irl interaction becomes more loaded, problematic and fractured, any form of attention is validation and proof of one's impact on some small of the world. The perceived value or lack thereof is irrelevant, merely to post is to have left one's mark.

They're entertaining if nothing else and every once in a while you find some that are quite clever amidst all of the shit.

Its because us humans like to show off our opinion to the world, even if they're just one of millions of comments on a site. Also, most of us like to argue with someone who has a different opinion too, so if we see something we disagree with we absolutely have to show them why their definitely 100% wrong and stupid for thinking that!

The system works fine and constuctive comments are good.

But of course,Youtube has a large proportion of idiots who need to flex their e-peens by showing their skills at argueing on the internet over something very trivial.

If the person is providing a "Service" of sorts in the style and content of their videos, the comments section is a very good rapid feedback system directly from your viewer base. The more popular videos will have thousands of comments in the first few hours of it being up, some of them being useful feedback for improving the channel.
The work is in finding the diamond in the rough, I suppose.

My thoughts? I quit using my YouTube account when Google merged the sites and i couldn't keep my e-mail and YouTube opened at the same time. Well... i do, but i don't bother logging on. Most of my favorite series had their own websites and quit posting on YouTube as well, so what the fuck right? YouTube has been a fucking mess for years, at least the comments were consistently stupid.

Like/Dislike actually has nothing to do with the user. It's a cleverly designed survey system that collects and catalogs the data of genres and other things about video's and shows how many people like it, and dislike it.

YouTube then sells this information to companies so they know how to direct their products. How do you think YouTube makes all its money? Its certainly not from the few people who pay for premium accounts. They makes it all from data collection and selling.

Bet you didn't know that one.
Actually that data now only goes to Google.
It's far more amusing that Facebook does the same thing, but their data banks are filled with a bit more private stuff.

Well to be honest commenting on anything most of the time it makes no difference. Sometimes someone replies but more often than not its for the wrong reasons

So in my opinion youtube comments are no more pointless than this comment you may or may not be reading now.

wow. that's surprisingly deep for a thread about friggin youtube...
It actually made me think about life, so thanks for that :)
OT: the 'youtube comment system' works fine, it's exactly the same as the comment system on pretty much any other media sharing website. the only difference is that youtube is used either by total retards, or people with sense enough to just laugh at the people in group A and move on.
maybe it would work better if they got dr. Breen to moderate it :D

If this was any more true it would be spoken by Morgan Freeman himself.

Discussion value? It's a comment section; not a forum. I only find trolls on the most popular videos on there. Most of the videos I watch don't have them. But I will admit the "95 people missed the like button" type comments are annoying now.

I didn't like when they changed it so you couldn't hide the comments anymore. Because they are rubbish, and pointless. You can't unsee them and most of the time they ruin the punchline or whatever for a sketch video.

But I love a couple awesome Opera extensions that allow any Youtube video to look like this:

That is really all you see. No annoying/pointless comments. No similar videos either, if you wish. And you can decide the size of the video screen as well. The default size is so awfully small, and even the smallest resolutions don't go worse with a little resizing. You can return to the regular view to see the similar videos and comments with just a click of a button.

And the dark color scheme is just a thousand times better than the original. More pleasant with less contrast and especially perfect for watching videos, you know, the whole point of YouTube.

I understand what you are saying. most people think that if the swear every second word it will make them sound better (obviously it just make's them sound like an idiot). However I have been able to give good advise to certain people and they have given me good advice. and as Colour-Scientist said you once in a while find something very clever and funny. ultimately people like to voice they're opinion on matter's (it's what I am doing right now). the videos with youtube commenting are usually more popular than those without which means more money for google (because they own youtube). anyway some videos like "Danny MacAskill" or "Mean Kitty song" seem to have less hate but that may just be because of all the comment's. I think one of the biggest problems is people don't think before they type.

For every good comment there is one hundred bad ones. I say remove the comment system altogether.
