They serve a purpose.

When you feel like shit, just read youtube comments. Because there's no way in hell your worse than those people.
My thoughts exactly. I thought people stopped taking youtube comments seriously years ago.

I wish they'd just get rid of the highest rated comments section. It's always so surprising. It's almost never an actual clever comment, it's usually one of the following things that depresses the hell out of me:

Some idiot just parroting back one of the lines from the video.
Some idiot saying "thumbs up for [some random thing completely unrelated to the video]".
Some idiot making some completely unclever comment about the people who clicked the dislike button.
Some idiot making some random comment about Justin Bieber.

Now it wouldn't be so bad if people just thumbed down them, but this is the shit that gets hundreds of thumbs up! I don't understand it at all. :(

The only thing about it is being able to delete that junk when people post it on my videos.

What about those of us who do have discussions on the youtube comments section? And for that matter, everything you said can be applied to pretty much any online chatbox/forum/comments ever.
I dont think so, there are a lot of forums on the internet (such as this one) where there is hardly any stupid and idiotic chatter. However, I agree that a lot of places on the internet, there are quite a few forums where it's just trolls etc. But the point I was making is that youtube seems to be one of the worst. And when it comes to actual discussion. I have seen it on YT, but only rarely, mostly when you try and make a valid point, people take it very offensively and just retaliate with a stupid flame comment.

I agree they're pointless on most videos, but if they didn't exist, that little bit of interactivity would be gone.
I was TRYYYYYYYYYING to be ironic... the world dont get me man... girls go for bad boys right?

Because there's absoultely none of those here, hunh?

And you must populate the popular vids. You can get rather educational and insightful conversations. I know on the NHL 24/7 series for the Winter Classic I schooled a Caps fan in the comments sections. And in some of the Smashing Pumpkins and Radiohead vids, there are people who will educate at will.

I dont know, Youtube is like any site with little/no modding. YOu get more trolls. Take the mods from here and see how many (more) empty and pointless posts you get.

You're a bit late to the party here. This has been the shared sentiment of pretty much the entire escapist for years. I personally don't agree, since I can think of one video series for which the comments legitimately contain substance, or at least far more so than the YouTube standard, namely the vlogbrothers videos.
